Chapter 29: Const Orphanage 25

As Altair was about to leave the infirmary, he suddenly heard the ta-ta-ta of footsteps in the corridor. The sound seemed to emanate from the stairwell at the end of the first-floor hallway.

His instincts suggested it might be Georgewill. However, the footsteps did not move towards the infirmary but stopped on the stairs, then the sound vanished. He must have entered the expanded section of the laboratory.

Altair paced the corridor a few times and again smelled the scent of birch trees. Could Elvira have been here too? He followed the scent to the entrance of the expanded section's laboratory. Glancing at his watch, he noted there was still time before the second half of the investor's banquet; he didn't mind checking out what Georgewill and Elvira were up to.

He slowly pushed open the door to the expanded section; Elvira seemed to have just rushed in.

The air carried the scent of birch trees, making the ominous laboratory feel as pure and quiet as a snowy night.

Elvira must have run quickly, likely to dodge laser beams. Was he trying to reach the end of the laboratory? Was there a secret passage there too? Altair quickly teleported to the end of the laboratory, finding the black door. With a gentle push, the door opened.

...

Elvira scanned his surroundings quickly, the floor beneath him creaking occasionally. He distinctly heard the ""Ta, ta, ta—"" of footsteps from behind, as if someone was closely following him, nearly touching his spine. A strong malice filled the air, the dim lights flickered unpredictably, and the entire room seemed to sway between light and darkness.

"Ta, ta, ta—"

The footsteps grew louder and closer, prompting Elvira to involuntarily step back, pressing against the cold wall. Squinting, he focused intently on the direction of the footsteps. His hand was already clenched around the flying knives, ready to strike at any moment.

"Ta, ta, ta—"

The sound, accompanied by rapidly flickering lights, became louder and more urgent.

Elvira took a deep breath, and like lightning, he launched the flying knives. They sliced through the air, emitting a shrill friction noise before embedding into the wall with a deep thud.

He missed; the target had vanished at the last moment.

The lights flickered faster, as if madly jumping between light and darkness. Elvira could only squint, holding the flying knives in a defensive stance. Dark, then light, dark, then light—the dimness and brightness alternated.

"Ta, ta, ta—"The footsteps continued to echo.

Elvira's senses were overwhelmed by the succession of sounds and lights, feeling the world spin around him as his body involuntarily fell backward. Suddenly, the lights went out, plunging everything into silence. Elvira felt something moving around him, circling. He was too tense to move, holding his breath, waiting for a chance to strike.

The creature seemed capable of climbing walls, moving like a gecko, shifting from side to side on the wall, even crossing over him to climb above.

Elvira gripped the handle of his flying knives tightly, his fingernails digging into his palm. Then, suddenly, the lights blazed on!

He jerked his head up to see a grotesque face nearly touching his own, only an inch away!

The face was large and round, with features as if squeezed together unnaturally. The eyes were tiny, spinning like marbles in their sockets, and the thick malice seemed to turn into pus about to drip and tarnish Elvira's face! The monster slid down from the wall, opening its gaping mouth, lunging straight for Elvira's neck.

Run! Driven by instinct, Elvira dodged to the right, then sprang to his feet and sprinted towards the door.

That monster was Georgewill!

Georgewill's arms were unusually long, almost reaching his ankles. He stretched out his long arms, wrapping them around Elvira's waist and arms like rope, binding Elvira tightly and pulling him forward.

Elvira immediately felt constricted all over, barely able to breathe. Struggling, he lowered his head and bit the flying knife out of his sleeve, its blade gleaming coldly.

Just as he was about to get close to Georgewill, it seemed to notice the flying knife in Elvira's mouth and hurriedly released its grip. Then, a powerful punch crashed into Elvira's face.

Elvira felt a burning pain on his face, and the flying knife dropped to the ground as his grip loosened.

Georgewill slowly stood up, towering over Elvira. The punch had left Elvira dizzy and nearly unconscious.

"Are you tracking me?" Elvira, his eyes fixed on Georgewill's almost melted features, asked coldly.

"You're sneaking around here; I had to keep an eye on you." Georgewill's voice carried an evil that echoed like the chorus of millions of bats in the dark.

"Do you not know what crimes Landric committed?" Elvira massaged his temples, his gaze filled with sarcasm.

"Don't spout nonsense! Dean Austin is a good man; he has given us children the best treatment, and it's only right that we repay him!" Georgewill glared at Elvira fiercely, countering his statement.

"Us?" Elvira repeated, then had a moment of realization, "So you're also one of the children from Const Orphanage."

"That's right, Dean Austin has been good to me, and it's natural for me to repay him." Georgewill cracked a smile, revealing his sharp, knife-like teeth, and the layers of teeth inside his mouth were terrifying.

"In my eyes, you're nothing but a failed experiment." Elvira felt his strength returning and provocatively sized up Georgewill, "You're hideously ugly."

Elvira carefully moved backward, trying to increase the distance between himself and Georgewill.

Georgewill didn't get angry but calmly smiled, "Dean was right, the Orphanage is the purest place, and the outside world is full of filthy desires. You judge by appearances; in my eyes, you're just as repulsive."

Hearing Georgewill's words, Elvira couldn't help but shake his head, realizing that Dean Austin was also adept at manipulating people's minds.

As soon as Georgewill finished speaking, he let out a roar and charged at Elvira with astonishing speed.

At that moment, Elvira, sitting on the ground, faced the charging Georgewill and fired flying knives in rapid succession. Each knife, like a falling meteor with blazing flames, aimed directly at Georgewill's eyes, heart, wrists, and ankles.

Unaffected, Georgewill continued his charge. He easily tilted his head to dodge the knives aimed at his eyes, while the others were repelled by his body.

Elvira's eyes widened in shock. What exactly was Georgewill?

Suddenly, Georgewill pounced on Elvira, pinning him to the ground and seizing his throat from above.

Elvira emitted a low groan from his throat, but he continued to resist with all his might, punching Georgewill's abdomen repeatedly. Each punch landed heavily, producing a dull thud.
