Chapter 4: Comfort

Sophia didn't know what she was expecting, but the man was just as mad as when he first woke up in the alley.

The nurse shut the door behind her and Sophia was filled with fear as the man pinned her with a death stare.

However, when the door was shut, the man smelled something sweet like dessert overtaking the smell of sterilized hospital equipment. He felt momentarily comforted, but the confusion only rose.

'Mine…' the word forced its way into his thoughts. He gripped his forehead and grimaced.

"Are you… okay?" Sophia asked, alarmed, but she was too terrified to take a step further.

Even though he held his forehead and scowled, his cold blue eyes went back to the woman who was supposedly his fiancé.

Her full lips were the first thing he noticed other than her scent. Otherwise, she was too innocent and young-looking compared to what he would imagine his type was. Unfortunately, he couldn't say anything for sure. His memories were locked behind a wall of fog.

Even if he didn't know who she really was, there was a desire to conquer her. Why was he the one in the hospital bed and not her?

His movements were beginning to make his headache worse. He had to shut his eyes as soon as the room started spinning. He was going to be sick if he wasn't careful, just as the nurse told him.

"I heard them talking while I was waiting," Sophia uttered. "You have a concussion. They wouldn't be surprised if you have memory loss…"

She trailed off. If he was truly suffering from amnesia, maybe he would believe she was his fiancé. Otherwise, she was going to get in trouble for bending the rules and staying there outside of visiting hours.

"I can't remember anything." He replied in an anguished tone. "Who the hell am I?"

His voice was becoming louder and it caused Sophia to take a step backwards, but there was nowhere for her to go. Her back was against the door.

His forehead creased in contemplation as he looked over Sophia.

The room fell silent and Sophia couldn't look in the direction of the man who had his eyes set on her. He terrified her to her very core. Of course, someone that attractive wouldn't have the best personality.

"Come over here," the man in the bed ordered in a domineering tone as if she were his servant.

Sophia noticed he didn't say please and his voice was stern. She wanted to do anything but approach someone who appeared to be so volatile.

As much as he made her frightened, Sophia didn't want him to think that she would put up with his terrible attitude.

Her green eyes set on the man and a small frown appeared on her face.

"Don't order me around," she responded. "I could have left you in that alley but I figured you deserved a comfortable place to rest rather than a pile of garbage."

For the first time, she saw the man's angry expression falter for a moment and he looked scared. Though it was only fleeting and his cold blue eyes returned to what seemed to be their usual anger.

"Please," he requested quietly, though his voice still had an edge to it that she didn't particularly care for.

Sophia frowned but she did as she was asked. It seemed that the wild animal did have manners, after all.

"You really don't remember anything?" she asked.

Her thoughts were filled with him talking about people coming after him and asking if his father had anything to do with it. She wondered what kind of rough background he was from to assume something like that.

However, the man before her now seemed like a shell compared to who she experienced before. He was less panicked but definitely confused. He must have forgotten more after the last bout of unconsciousness.

Sophia realized he was sweating and his body occasionally trembled.

"Do you have a fever?" she asked quietly.

She had the urge to reach out and touch his forehead with the back of her hand. Maybe he had some kind of infection as well. At least his pupils weren't dilated as much anymore.

When she was within his reach, he grabbed her arm and brought it to his nose. Her vulnerable wrist was bent at an awkward angle and she grimaced at being manhandled.

"This scent…" he trailed off.

Sophia wrenched her arm from his grasp and shot him a glare of confusion. For not knowing her, he acted familiar and she found it unsettling.

"You're the one who smells like spearmint," she insisted.

"Not spearmint–"

He was interrupted by the arrival of a doctor and a nurse. The man let go of her arm, surprised to be interrupted.

The doctor approached Sophia first.

"You are…?" he asked her.

Sophia uncomfortably glanced at the man who was glaring at the doctor. He seemed vulnerable for a moment until they were interrupted and his anger had returned. Everything about him was so unpredictable.

"I'm his fiancé, Sophia," she introduced herself, trying to make her voice sound confident in what she was saying.

Dread filled her stomach. If her boyfriend heard what she was saying, he was going to be so mad. The state of their relationship would get even worse.

The man was lost. His head felt heavy yet it was empty. He wanted to believe what she was saying because her proximity made his head stir. He was feeling possessive of her. He wanted her to look in his direction again and pay attention to him and only him.

Was he really injured so badly that he couldn't remember someone who was supposed to be his fiance?

As the spinning became worse, the man squeezed his eyes shut. He was worried he was going to throw up if he didn't calm down.

To further prove herself, Sophia reached out and placed a hand on his arm.

When she was close to him, he felt better. He could breathe easier as if she was oxygen.

He wanted to believe that someone like her could be his. The word 'mine' appeared in his thoughts again and he started to believe…
