Chapter 13: If He Fails to Treat You like a Princess, I Will

Princess? Keagan's eyes flickered. Did she mean how boyfriends would normally see their girlfriends? Heh, she used to be Elijah's princess—that was right.

She hung her head down and sighed softly. "No need to say those things. He had his reasons, and I had my shortcomings. I can't blame you for letting him handle the people in his office, but those people are his friends. Making him suspicious of them is something he can't do with ease. Then again, I doubt he'll let other people deal with them, either."

"Do you… not want me to pursue this matter anymore?" Wren reached out to stroke Keagan's head once. "How could you forgive those men?"

"I didn't forgive them. I just… don't want Elijah to suffer because of them, too." Keagan moved to lean against the couch and closed her eyes as she breathed deeply. "I got out of their scheme—no damage done to my body. I don't want Elijah to be harmed when my wounds are theoretical."

Wren pursed her lips before facing forward. "All right, if he begs for an extension, I'll convey your intentions. However, the second time they dared to do such a thing, I will surely punish them according to the laws of my household. Such offenders will only bring pain to another place if laid off."

Keagan opened her eyes and murmured, "I wonder how lawless can the Chastain be."

Twitch! She realized she voiced out something she should tell someone from that very household. Keagan sat up straight and waved her hands to dispel ill thoughts. "Wait! No, I didn't mean to say that! Erm, the Chastain family is like those famous families on screen, and they… the media always has shown them in a bad light! I didn't mean to say that Madam is anything like them!"

"Hm? I won't deny it." Wren moved to lean back against the couch and propped her arm to cradle her head. Her body looked vulnerable and guarded at the same time, borderline seducing everyone else to be blinded by her femininity. She even smiled. "I do intend to crush their hearts and drink their blood."

"…!" Keagan froze, and her mind seemingly remembered a scene familiar to her description. Then again, she couldn't recall where she had seen it or if it was even reality. Her uncertainty made her laugh. "Madam, I can't tell if you're joking. Please have mercy."

With a chuckle, Wren sat up again and turned toward Gephardt, who was still standing in front of the table. She asked, "What's occupying you, Gephardt?"

The man twitched and turned to Wren. He was holding two opened cups of the frappes, but his expression was sulky. He then walked toward Wren and sat cross-legged on the floor in front of Wren. His hands offered the frappes to Wren. "I like them both, but I have to reserve one for you. Which do you like more? This one or this one?"

Wren stared at the man before reaching out to pet his head. "Why don't you just have both of them for yourself? I already drank so much of the third cup. I'm already full."

"All right," Gephardt said in a calm tone, but Keagan watched him put both straws inside his mouth. He then fell forward and rested his forehead against Wren's knees. Gurgle, gurgle. The man stayed there as if nothing was wrong with what he was doing.

"Please don't mind him too much." Wren stroked Gephardt's head three times before turning to Keagan again. "You said you want to go home, but do you mind waiting for another hour? I can drive you to your house after waiting for the results of the board meeting."

Keagan's smile slowly fell at the thought of going home. Based on what Elijah had said, she couldn't go back to that house anymore. Even the bag full of her belongings was lost. Wait, no, nothing in those belonged to her. She was only using them.

She then smiled at Wren again. "I'm sorry, I…"

"She doesn't have anywhere to go. She might as well be a stray." Gephardt huffed and glanced at Keagan before resuming his position from earlier.

At those words, Keagan even felt like crying despite her smile. How did this strange guy know about her situation? Did he hear her mumbles and conclude she was done for just from looking at her and hearing her attempt to have her life forfeited? It was good he didn't tell Wren readily about that.

Keagan met Wren's curious gaze. "Elijah won't like to see me in his house again. Yesterday, he came looking for me and brought me home. Today, I doubt he will do the same. Madam, can I crash at your place again tonight? I promise I won't bother you or anyone from the household."

"You don't have to worry. You can stay with me as long as you need it." Wren pulled on her lips for another gentle smile. "If he fails to treat you like a princess, I will gladly stand in. After all, you continue to be the most beautiful."

"…Madam, I have no money to lend you."

"Huh?"

Buzz! Wren's phone in her pocket vibrated from another message, and Gephardt hissed as if something annoyed him. It also took Wren's attention from the strange response Keagan gave her. When she checked the screen, her brows frowned. "They still failed to reach an agreement. I guess I gave them enough time to resolve it themselves."

Keagan hummed in curiosity, but Gephardt lifted his head to show his sour face. "That troublesome ball of fat just wants more money. Cut him off! Shred him to pieces!"

"Hush, Gephardt, this is company affairs. Let me deal with it." Wren rubbed the man's head, and Gephardt returned to his earlier position.

"Uhm, aren't you treating your boyfriend a little unconventionally, Madam? Is Mr. Kosarin all right with being treated like a pet?" Keagan couldn't help but ask. After all, she realized Gephardt seemed stuck at home, without visiting Wren in her workplace until today. In fact, he didn't seem to go to other places. Also, the way he was being spoiled…

This was pet behavior, not that of a man-child or something similar. The amount of petting he received would even look derogatory to any spoiled adult.

Wren looked at Keagan with curious eyes again. "Hm? It's because he's my cat. He may appear strange to you if you regard him as a boyfriend, but not much if you think of him as my cat. Also, you can call him Gephardt. No need to say Mr. Kosarin. After all, if someone from the board heard you, they might think you're referring to my husband."

"Huh?" Keagan gasped and had a hand cover her mouth. There was even a blush as she realized her mistake of calling Gephardt Wren's boyfriend. "Husband? You're married, Madam?"

"Divorced, but that's not important."
