Chapter 25: Little Help

A man was walking through the slums where the homeless live. Unlike most people there, the man wore a full suit and was dressed so neatly. Making himself the center of attention of several homeless people there.

When he was about to leave the place, he accidentally collided with a boy.

"Are you okay?" the man asked.

"Yes, sorry for bumping into you, sir," said the boy and left.

On the way, the boy took out a wallet that he managed to steal from the man. It turned out that he deliberately hit the man to steal his wallet.

At the same time, a girl saw the boy's action and immediately snatched his wallet. "Just because you don't have anything, you can't steal from someone!" the girl exclaimed.

"What the hell are you! Give me that wallet back!"

The dark-haired boy tried to snatch the wallet back, but the tall girl blocked him and took the wallet away.

She opened the wallet and looked at the identity of the owner. She found an ID that bore the name James Bradwell. The girl was sure that the owner was still around.

As she was about to insert the ID again, another card fell out of the wallet. She looked at the fallen card and found something interesting about the owner of the wallet.

She immediately ran to find the man named James and finally found him at the end of the street, looking for something. The girl immediately approached the man and handed him his wallet.

"Mr. Bradwell, this is your wallet. Someone took it, but I assure you he hasn't taken anything in it!"

"Oh thank you little lady, this wallet is very precious to me. Since you gave it back to me, is there anything I can do to repay you?"

The girl nodded and looked at James with a serious face. "Make me a secret agent, let me work for you, sir!" she pleaded.

Inside the wallet, she found a business card with an organization name and the man's name with his title as the leader of the organization.

For a moment, the man was somewhat surprised by the request of the girl he didn't recognize. He saw the girl's shabby clothes and messy brown hair. But her eyes, the blue eyes she had had something else in them. She gave him a look that was different from most people he had met.

"What's your name?" asked James.

"Amanda, Amanda Sanchess!"

*****

Amanda slowly opened her eyes. She had been asleep since last night after eating her dinner in the hotel room she rented yesterday.

Her body felt so fresh and warm, the heating in the room was still on since yesterday afternoon. Amanda rubbed her stomach to wish her son a good morning.

"I think I'm too comfortable sleeping here. The soft mattress, the warm room and the quiet morning. It's the same in my own house, it just lacks heating," Amanda said.

She got out of bed and looked out the window. The snow outside was thicker than yesterday, it seemed like the storm yesterday dropped more snow than before. Amanda was worried about whether or not she would be able to go home and work at Jhon's cafe.

Amanda took her cell phone and called Jhon, telling him about her situation. Jhon told Amanda not to work that day if she felt tired on the road.

"Just rest today. You can work again tomorrow," Jhon said over the phone.

"Okay then. Sorry again." Amanda turned off the phone.

Since she didn't have to go to work that day, Amanda took the time to go look for a heating unit for her house.

After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, she went to the electronic furniture store to look for a space heater.

It didn't take long for Amanda to get what she needed and head straight for the bus stop to District 36. At exactly eleven o'clock in the afternoon, she sat waiting for the bus to come and pick her and the other passengers up.

When the bus arrived, Amanda asked if it was going to District 36. Unfortunately, the bus was not going there.

"The route to District 36 is closed due to yesterday's snowstorm. We are not operating there until further notice. Very sorry, ma'am..." the bus driver said and closed the bus door and left.

Amanda who heard that was confused. How was she going to get back home? She couldn't just stay at the hotel until the route to District 36 opened. What if it could take days?

She had even tried hiring a taxi, but no taxi would go there because of the thick snow and the long journey.

"How about this... I can't possibly walk home either," she muttered in confusion.

At the same time, a man was riding his patrol car alone, driving around in downtown Quespion. As he was looking around the streets, he saw a woman he recognized.

A brown-haired woman with blue eyes, standing in confusion near a snow-filled bus stop in the freezing cold. Without thinking twice, he drew his car closer and stopped in front of her.

"Amanda?" he called out to make sure.

The woman turned her head towards the car that had stopped in front of her. She saw a man calling her name.

"Sheriff George?"

"Yes, it's me. What are you doing here?" asked George.

"I want to go home, but there are no buses going to District 36. There are no taxis going there either. Now I don't know how to get home," Amanda explained.

Hearing Amanda's story, George offered her a ride home. At first Amanda tried to refuse, she felt bad for George if she had to take her home.

"No problem, I haven't checked District 36 since yesterday anyway. So we might as well go there together," George replied getting out of his car.

"Let me help you put it in the trunk."

George lifted the heating device Amanda had bought and put it in the trunk, then opened the door next to the driver. "Come in."

Getting help from George, Amanda was happy and got into the car. The man also got back into the car.

"Are you ready?"

"Yes, I'm ready..." Amanda replied.

Before leaving, George noticed something about Amanda. He pulled off her belt and put it on Amanda. She was a bit surprised that George's face was now so close to hers.

"You forgot to wear your belt. Is it too tight?" asked George, putting the belt on Amanda.

"N-no... Thank you."

He nodded and put on his own belt and drove to District 36.
