Chapter 2: Chapter Two

Everything went wrong the next morning.

I woke up to the sound of rain softly pattering the rooftop. It rained a lot in Portmentum which was unfortunate as I was not the biggest fan of rain.

Somewhere in my sleepy mind it dawned on me that this was a school day, I yawned and reluctantly rolled over in my bed to check the time. My eyes shot open, it was 7:30. It was my first day in school and I'd over slept.

I decided there was still enough time to get ready for school if I hurried, I got off the bed and went downstairs. As expected, mom and dad had gone off early to work.  Dylan, who was supposed to wake me up was sitting at the dining table. He was an early riser who liked to complete thirty minutes of jogging every morning before school. I cursed him mentally for not waking me.

"You didn't think to wake me before going on your run?" I asked crossly.

"I forgot". He replied, his lips curled up in an all too familiar little smirk. "I guess we all make mistakes huh".

What a douchebag.

Jocelyn walked by, holding a piece of toast. She was already dressed and ready for school, I guess she was in on it too.

I rushed to the bathroom, brushed my teeth and had a thorough shower, as thorough as the time permitted me, I had to look and smell good for my new schoolmates, not to mention all the pretty ladies.

By the time i was done dressing up, it was 7:50. School was a fifteen minute drive so if I entered the car now and drove as fast as I could, I'd reach school at least five minute late.

Great.

I went outside to find that Dylan had driven off with Jocelyn, so far he was doing a great job of punishing me. I had no other option than to ride the bike under the drizzling rain.

As I expected, I got to school late, very late.

The school building was different from any school I'd seen before. There was no fence, no gate, just a series of brick buildings with a single sign bearing the name of the school in front of them. I stopped in front of the first office and went in.

The interior of the office was warmly lit, a long counter divided the room into two unequal halves. Behind it, four women sat busily at their desks. I went to the nearest woman, a dark skin woman with braided hair and a pair of thick glasses on.

"Excuse me". I said.

She looked up from her computer with a stern expression. "Yes, how may I help you?"

Yes, I'm Ashton Adams" . I said.

"She looked at me with a blank expression.

"I'm a new student". I added.

"New student". She said and browsed her computer. "What did you say your name was again?"

I repeated it.

"Okay". She said after a while. She printed a couple of documents and handed them to me. I checked and they included my schedule and a map of the school.

She went through my classes for me and showed me how to get there on the map. She gave me a slip all the teachers had to sign, I was to return it after school. She told me portentum was a good school and I would enjoy my stay here. I doubted that but I smiled and thanked her regardless.

I left the office and rode to the main building. The cars in the school were surprisingly ostentatious, I didn't expect that from a small town like this. A quote about judging books by their covers came to mind.. The students were more like I expected, they dressed in a way one would expect from people in rainy areas. I smiled, knowing I would fit right in.

I checked my map and located the building where my first class was, a brisk walk and I was entering it. The teacher, a wiry old man with large spectacles looked at me as I stood in the door way, he held a book in his hands, he was obviously mid lecture.

"I'm a new student". I said by way of explanation, I stepped in and gave him my slip.

"Oh." He said. "Fantastic, class, say hi to our new student Ashton Adams.

The class greeted me with lukewarm enthusiasm, I could already see some ladies giving each other knowing looks. The teacher whose name tag read Mr Smith gestured to the only available sit at the back. I made my way to the sit aware of the eyes on me.

As the lecture went on, I zoned out frequently. Mr Smith tried to be charismatic and carry the entire class along, unfortunately, animal science was too boring to be salvaged. I found myself hoping the class came to an end very soon.

After the lecture, I was packing my bags when I noticed a group of girls giggling and throwing hooded looks at me. One of them walked upn to me, a slim tan girl with black hair. She kept a neutral but pleasant face.

"Hi, my name is Joanne," she said and stretched out a slightly muscular arm to shake me. I took it.

"I'm Ashton," I replied.

"I know, the teacher announced it," she replied, her eyes danced with mischief. I didn't know what to say in reply so I shurugged and gave her a small smile.

"Where are you headed next?" She asked.

"I'm supposed to be at the gym, basketball practice", I explained. "I don't know where it is though, im not very good at reading maps".

"Oh, I know where it is," she replied. "I can take you."

"Really? That would be nice thank you, I replied." I put a book into my bag and picked it up. She waved her friends goodbye and we went out of the classroom.

"How is it like?" She asked as we walked. "Your former town."

"Hotter," I replied curtly. I did not want to discuss my former town, icertainly wasn't going to tell her about the dullache I felt whenever I thought about my life back there.

"That's all?" She pushed, "what are the landscapes like, what are the people like, what was the general mood of the place?"

I tried to keep the irritation out of my voice as I replied. "It is bright and sunny, ypu wpuldmt like it." And I was right, Joanne wore a black top with black sleeves, her jeans were black, she had nose and lip piercings. I generally don't judge books by their covers but she seemed like the type to dislike light and all forms of bright colours.

She smirked. "Why do you think I won't?"

"Isn't it obvious?" I replied, I was bordering on rudeness now but I was still too pissed to care.

"You know nothing," she said with a laugh. "I actually prefer bright and sunny weather."

I scanned her face looking for any signs of humor but other than the usual glint of mischief in her eyes, there wss utter seriousness. "Oh", I said.

"Yes, mr stereotype," she said and jabbed me with an elbow.

We soon reached the gymnasium, I expected her to turn back and leave now that she had shown me but she went into the gym, paused at door and gave me a look that said 'you coming or not?' I sighed and went in after her.
