Chapter 3: Benjamin's Journal

< Earth, 12 years after they came >

It had seemed unreal when a wormhole was discovered in the Solar system between Mars and Jupiter. NASA and other space agencies made wild speculations on the cause and significance of the wormhole. Predictions and opinions were given by the scientific community, political groups, and even civilians had something to say. Many believed that it was the beginning of the end of the Solar System, while religious ones tagged it as the 'Armaggedon'. Science fanatics declared a dawn of a new age. Indeed, it was a new age.

World governments, rich philanthropists and entrepreneurs began the quest of building spacecrafts that would be able to travel to the other side of the wormhole and explore what was on the other side. But, before they were even completed, large alien spaceships designed with technology only seen in human science-fiction movies emerged. The vast ships approached the planet and hovered over the ionosphere for weeks. Debates were then held globally to determine if the ships were hostile or friendly and several attempts were made to contact the ships.

People became fidgety, anxious and afraid, resulting in a breakdown of law and order. Massive riots, burglary, arson, murder, rape cases, vandalism, hoarding and inflation frequented the news headlines.

 Six weeks after the civil unrest began, a message was sent to the world leaders and monarchs and then to every single electronic device on the globe;

"Submit and live, resist and die"

The message was also mysteriously broadcast to the internet and all social media handles and remained there for a week before the Blackout, when the internet was shut down for the first time since its creation.

World governments decided to fight back the invaders and mobilized their troops, conscripting civilians to augment the fighting force. For the first time in human history, all the countries came together as one, irrespective of race, religious beliefs or even political systems. They all signed the treaty that allied the countries together against the invaders and to support each other whenever it called for. The nuclear powerhouses were given the go-ahead to fire their nuclear warheads at the ships, for the first time since 1945. Russia, Israel, North Korea, China and Iran were on the forefront of the nuclear assault on behalf of Earth.

Surprisingly, the atomic projectiles were redirected and diverted, striking parts of Europe, Asia and North America, killing millions and devastating the continents with radiation. This caused the other world powers to halt their use of any secret weapon they had, in case, they also backfired. It became obvious that the invaders had been bidding their time to learn all they could about Earth. They had control over satellites, electronic and computer networks, and even military weapons systems.

When it seemed as though the crises on Earth couldn't get any worse, smaller battleships were sent out of the warships, landing simultaneously in several continents. Hundreds of thousands of alien creatures known as the Myrixs stormedajor cities and towns, laying waste to human military forces and civilians with their high tech weapons.

The Myrixs were short, the tallest of them reaching only six feet and had four digits on each limb. They lacked eyebrows and eyelids and had slits for nostrils and ears, their skin pale grey in colour and covered with scales. The strange part of their anatomy that astonished humans was their head which was pointed upwards, ending at an apex, like a pyramid. They were hairless and not very friendly.

Many thought the Myrixs were the invaders but they were wrong. They were only 'underlings' of the self-proclaimed conquerors, and they were not the only ones. A new threat was unleashed on Earth. Originally known as the Arcanes, humans dubbed them as 'crawlers'because of their ability to climb walls and deal heavy damages to anything they came across. They were green mean fiends, controlled by the invaders and used to cause chaos amongst human soldiers before the Myrixs arrived.

With their long huge claws, sharp fangs and a whip-like tail equivalent to a scorpion's stinger, they became the most deadliest creatures on Earth. Their venom could kill within minutes with no known cure amongst the human scientists. Coupled together, with superior spaceships and firepower, these creatures were able to bring down the last military defenses.

The aliens released a gaseous mist from their ships that seemed to purify and end the radiation. And then they emerged. They looked almost human except their skin tone had a golden hue. Lacking flaws, their ears were pointed, like the elves and fairies in children's fantasy books. They were too perfect, that people couldn't believe that they were capable of such carnage and destruction. Many called them 'gods' and others said they were the next evolved phase of humans from the future. They were tall creatures, and strangely had green shades of hair. Intelligent beings as they were, they spoke and understood all the languages spoken on Earth through the aid of a micro device implanted on their necks.

With the conquest of humanity completed, the Crugi-as they named themselves, occupied strategic cities in the world like Tokyo, London, Washington DC, Moscow, Sydney, Rome and Abuja, their headquarters being in the United States. They ruled the humans living in their controlled regions, prohibiting them from travelling outside those regions, while their troops were sent to capture unexplored regions.

Humans evacuated from their homes to live in fortified military bases under the leadership of a military leader, who in turn received orders from the military council, that operated secretly in Hawaii. These military bases were converted to settlements with high walls, reinforced steel outposts and anti-aircraft weapons, to protect the humans living inside and also keep the aliens at bay.

On the other hand, thanks to the few humans who risked their lives to escape the occupied regions, we now know that the Crugi are experiencing difficulty in ruling humans. The extraterrestrials have turned to a second alternative, appointing human diplomats, sympathetic to their cause, to serve as a go-between to the humans living in their controlled regions. However, this tactic to promote alien sovereignty is failing as humans refuse to be governed or ruled by extraterrestrials.

The Human Resistance is brewing.

Benjamin closed his book and dropping his pen on top of the hard cover journal, sighed. He looked at his watch and shook his head furiously.

The idiot's gonna be late again, he thought.

It was a normal routine for him to be late for his tasks but, Benjamin had thought he would be earlier today, when the Task Supervisors were making their rounds of all the duty posts.

Guess some habits never grow old in truth.
