Chapter 18: In the Depths

"I'd rather shoot straight..." murmured Jonathan as he watched Jill Valentine return after she eliminated the zombie that appeared behind them.

On the other side of the door is the hallway leading to the mansion's second floor, and in the same direction is the foyer of the first floor.

There was a dagger stuck in the door of an adjacent room, and Jill pulled it out, securing it at her waist.

Anyone who has seen anything about this world would know that the most powerful weapon is the dagger.

What any main character of the later events in this world does is emulate a dagger and stab zombies in the head. The infinite weapon that never runs out and is essential to use to save ammunition.

"I should use a machete..." Jonathan thought very clearly; after all, the machete is a slightly longer weapon and would give him more confidence to use than a simple short knife.

This mansion was a maze, with all sorts of things that one would miss even if they had been through this place before. Anyone like Jonathan, who had never been here before, would easily get lost in the vast number of hallways and rooms around.

Not only did he have to memorize the way they came, but he also had to be very careful not to be attacked by a group of zombies and end up trapped in a dead-end corridor.

As he walked, Jonathan's tense muscles screamed at him to take a break. But obviously, being relaxed when you are aware of the danger lurking in the place is almost impossible.

Suddenly, Jonathan saw a narrow hidden door in the hallway.

The pattern of the door is connected to the pattern of the surrounding wall, so if you don't look closely, you might not notice the difference.

"Jill, it seems there's a hidden door here..." Jonathan pointed to the door and alerted Valentine.

Jill frowned, realizing the curiosity of this door, so she opened it, only to find the gloomy cemetery outside.

"What's the purpose of this door? You should know it leads to the cemetery, so why bother telling me there's a door?" Jill asked coldly, as if somehow she believed Jonathan was intentionally very innocent.

Jonathan was losing his mind; he should know the mansion a bit since he supposedly worked in this place. But it's absolutely impossible for him to remember anything, as he didn't get any memories from the body he was using.

"I don't know this mansion; I said it before. I don't dare to explore this place alone..." Jonathan said a bit more annoyed than before.

That is, he shouldn't be upset since he seems to act very carefully and is innocent in many aspects that he shouldn't question. But it's true that he doesn't know this place; from another perspective, it may be very evident, yet he believes it's not that way.

"Let's take a look..." Jill Valentine shook her head while pointing ahead and looked at Jonathan, who seemed to be silent.

When he heard this, Jonathan took a breath and followed Jill, who now seemed very confident in her movements.

When the two went out, there were coffins and tombstones everywhere, in addition to zombies wandering all around.

"At least there's a shovel..." Jonathan was not only glad to find a shovel but also to explore all these places in the mansion since that was helping his mission succeed.

With his AK hanging on his shoulder, Jonathan didn't worry about losing it, so he simply put it aside and held the shovel with both hands ready to attack the first zombie in front of him.

Crack!

The edge of the shovel cut through the zombie's head; there was no burst of blood since that zombie had been dead for a while, so because its blood was coagulated, there was no big scene. That's why it was also easy to kill a zombie, as they were rotten.

Crack! Crack!

Jonathan felt like he was using all his strength to attack the zombies, but he couldn't help but save some strength for fear that it wouldn't be enough to end the life of that zombie.

"That seems to be the last one..." Jill stepped back while holding her dagger and looked at Jonathan, who was staring at a portrait of a child holding a bow.

"Let's continue this way..." Jonathan found a staircase leading to the lower floor.

This time he didn't wait for Jill's opinion, let alone the presence of anyone else, as he needed to get to the underground area where he found something really eerie.

Where they arrived, there were four stone statues with very large heads, while on the left, there was a blazing fire. The room that seemed to be made entirely of stone was fully illuminated, and Jonathan knew what was here.

Although the atmosphere seemed very frightening, Jonathan held back his fear and looked at this place with coldness.

"How can this kind of place exist in a mansion where you're supposed to work?" Jill's face was full of disbelief as she looked at what she assumed might be a satanic cult site.

Working nearby, Jonathan should have had an explanation, but he didn't say much.

Jonathan didn't remember much about the mansion's creator; all he recalled was that the creator had died shortly after celebrating the completion of this great work.

The designer of this mansion died in his own trap, and the place where he died should be this stone room.

Jonathan pointed at the coffin and said, "Don't you want to see what's inside? Perhaps, if we're lucky, we won't find anything, but if we're unlucky, we might encounter a terrible monster."

Jill wanted to reject the offer, but she wanted to know what was in the coffin and if all those monsters that Jonathan had claimed to kill alongside Rebecca were real.

She thought in silence, but as she thought, she saw Jonathan take a shotgun from his backpack and hold it tightly while staring at the coffin.

"If you open that coffin, one of us might die, but by then your curiosity would be satisfied," Jonathan said in a cold tone, as if he didn't care about opening the coffin and seeing what was inside.

In the end, Jill said that although she doubted Jonathan, there was no reason to consider what he had told them as a lie, and they both returned to the mansion.

After leaving the cemetery, they reached a highly decorated room. It seemed to be a place where many things related to art were kept.

In the center of the room, there is a statue, and there seems to be something on top of the statue.

"I'll take a look..." When Jill moved a table to get a better look, Jonathan offered to do it with the sole purpose of building more trust in Jill.

She nodded, and after moving the table, Jonathan managed to discover that it was a scroll, and it was the map of the first floor of the mansion.

"Thank goodness we found something like this; it would be much easier to get out of the mansion with something like that..." Jonathan took out his cellphone and took a photo of the map, making sure not to miss any valuable information.

"Weren't you working here?" Jill asked in a doubtful tone.

"Yes, but as I said, I was situated in the Mansion on the other side of this forest, where they train new researchers... My job there was to select a team to then move on to the main laboratory."

After saying that, Jonathan wasn't interested in whether she believed him or not. When he saw a door behind the statue, he entered directly without saying anything.

The narrow hallways were filled with various paintings and strange statues. As he walked, Jonathan stopped when he noticed that Jill wasn't following him.

At this point, he had lost patience; he didn't need anyone to move forward, and he wouldn't stick with someone who didn't want to be close to him. He had survived things that very few could have in the Training Center, so if he's smart, he might survive until he meets Rebecca and continues.

If it's this way, it's because he wants to return to his peaceful life. He didn't ask for this; he didn't want anything because he had a full life where he was content with the people who mattered to him.

But while Jonathan was contemplating his options, he heard a scream that made him feel a little puzzled.

"Help!"

"Weren't you just fine a moment ago?" Jonathan wondered as he returned to where Jill Valentine had stayed.
