Chapter 9: Chapter Eight: Magical Training
"AGAIN!"
Purple lightning crackled across the grass field, ending in a loud bang.
Alex was standing on top of the stump of a cut-down tree, his purple lightning surrounding his body as he demonstrated the control of his attacks. Alex takes a deep breath, waiting for his orders.
"AGAIN!"
Alex once again unleashes a streak of lightning so loud it was almost deafening, the lightning ending up cutting through the tall grass blades, cutting them down evenly, with every blade end tip being burned by his lightning.
"Well done, Alex." the voice ordering him said.
"Thanks, Aunt Lyanna."
Lyanna and her daughter Amelie had come again to visit them, and this time Lyanna spent her time training both Alex and Raven in their magic. Both Alex and Raven were now nine years old, and both of them soon became ten years old. When a child turns ten, they make their public debut among the nobility in the area and also demonstrate their magical abilities. Plus, there are also marriage ties that form do to the meetings of royals.
Both Raven and Alex would be soon betrothed to noble families due to their 'fathers' deals. In fact, their father was already building options for the two with prospective marriage partners. Raven's biggest suitor was the first son of the Tarren family, a merchant family located on the coast. It would establish direct trade for Edward Blackwood and allow him to get richer. Meanwhile, Alex's biggest suitor was the second daughter of the Goldburn family, an old family with deep ties to members of the royal courts, and they also had one of the largest private militias in the western region, which would give Edward troops and connections if he ever made a pursuit into the courts in the capital. Edward was nothing if not cunning; both marriages would help him establish a strong foothold in the western part of the empire, making him an even more important man than he already was.
Anna and Lyanna both knew what Edward was planning but were still figuring out how to stop him from acting out his plans. In the meantime, it was time for Raven, Alex, and Amelie to begin their training.
Lyanna taught the three how to control their magic since she was more adept at it than Anna, and she helped the three reach a strong point of control in their magic, all three of them being more advanced than someone of their ages should be.
Alex, who had always shown strong magic, was now ranked in the intermediate level 2 magic level, which normally was only reached by people in their early 20s. Meanwhile, Raven wasn't far behind with intermediate level 1 magic, which was usually held by people in their late teens. Amelie wasn't as advanced as her two cousins, as she was only a beginner at level 3, meaning that while she was talented, she wasn't as talented as Alex and Raven magic-wise.
Meanwhile, as Lyanna taught them magic, Anna and Kaede taught them how to fight. Anna was a talented fighter and even had the rare talent of being able to manipulate her magic through her weapons, of which she mainly used one of two items: her spear, which she manifested magic at the tip of, causing a strong beam of lightning to come out of it, and her bow and arrow, which she used her electricity to create the arrows themselves. When she released the lightning arrow, it would cause the explosion of a lightning strike on impact.
Kaede, however, had a different style of combat, as she used twin daggers and her speed to attack. She was the fastest out of everyone among them and caused a different challenge for both Alex and Raven in combat, especially when they trained in the woods, which had tons of cover for Kaede to confuse the two.
While Alex was training with Lyanna, Raven was training with Kaede and her mother. Anna was attacking her daughter using her bow, and Raven was doing her best to dodge the attacks...but it wasn't going quite well.
*BOOM*
Raven was tossed to the ground by the explosion next to her caused by her mother. Raven was covered in bruises from being hit by the attacks her mother was sending.
"I told you, Raven, all you have to do is tag me, and this ends." Anna said with a smile as she was preparing her next shot.
Raven got up and started once again running towards her mother, as Kaede observed her speed and reaction time, but once again
*BOOM*
Raven was sent flying backwards yet again.
"Kaede, maybe Raven needs an example." Anna said.
"Yes ma'am." Kaede said as she prepared for Anna's attack.
Anna shot her next arrow, and unlike Raven, Kaede completely dodged the strike from Anna's bow and came out unharmed. This happened for three more shots before Kaede got close to Anna, but Anna, not wanting to lose, shot an arrow right at her own feet, causing an explosion that sent Kaede backwards, but Anna was completely unharmed by her magic.
Kaede looked at Anna slightly annoyed. She didn't expect Anna to completely throw caution to the wind and do something that risky in order to stop Kaede, but Kaede knew Anna didn't like to lose and would do anything in order not to, so all she could do was sigh.
"Kaede, you should've known I wasn't going to make it easy on you." Anna said it with the biggest smile.
This continued for a few hours, with neither Kaede nor Raven reaching Anna; there were even times where she would tease that they were finally going to do it just to use her magic and send the two back again.
"Same time tomorrow, girls." Anna said jokingly.
Raven looked at her mother and said "I...hate this..."
Kaede nodded her head and said "Same..."
Afterwards, both Alex and Raven were walking back to their house from the training fields. Both were tired and exhausted from their training, but that's when both of their days were suddenly ruined.
"Well, look what we have here, the two leeches of the Blackwood family name."
Alex sighed "What do you want, Edmund?"
Edmund was Alex's brother by name only and looked down on both Raven and Alex because of the fact that they were not Blackwoods by blood. Edmund had always despised Alex, especially, which was not helped by the fact that Alex possessed powerful magic while Edmund was left with so little magic that it was as if he didn't have any at all.
"What disrespect...but I should expect nothing less from a leech like you, and look at your sister; she may be a leech, but at least she's pretty." Edmund said, staring at Raven, which made her feel uncomfortable.
Alex, seeing this, stepped in front of his sister, and lightning started to generate around his body, which made Edmund take a step back.
"Edmund, first and last warning: back up and leave or things will get bad." Alex warned Edmund.
Edmund refused to lose face "What? You hurt me, and my dad will raise hell on you and your family; you cannot touch me-"
Edmund, in the middle of saying this, was suddenly blasted with lightning in his chest, sending him flying backwards. It wasn't a strong enough blast to kill him, but it without a doubt hurt him.
Edmund's eyes filled with tears as he called for his dad to save him "DAD! DAD!"
Alex and Raven walked away casually, leaving the crying mess to his own devices.
"Thanks Alex." Raven said with a bright smile.
"You don't have to thank me; we're family. I will always hurt creeps like him for you." Alex said in response.
The two walked back to their house as if nothing had happened.
Later that night, Edward along with some of his guards came to the house and demanded Alex come with them so he could pay for his crimes of hurting Edmund, but Anna and Lyanna were having none of it. They both knocked out all of Edward's guards using magic, which caused Edward to run away from the house, realizing that no matter what he did, he couldn't do anything to them.
Afterwards, Anna didn't even punish Alex or Raven and instead rewarded Alex with his favorite thing for dinner, and the entire family ate dinner together happily.
Meanwhile, Edward and his newly acquired mistress, Ada, were angry over what Anna had done. Ada was the fifth daughter of a small noble family, and in order to gain prestige, she learned how to be extremely manipulative to those around her. Due to her very good looks, she caught Edward's attention. Since Edward was married and couldn't get out of it, Ada was his mistress, who would blend into the background during official events, much to her dismay.
"That bitch needs to pay..." Ada said angrily.
Even though Ada was very manipulative, she did care about Edmund, as she learned to see him as a son, which only caused her further anger at Anna and her family.
"I know, but I don't have magic, and you possess magic that just isn't strong enough. I don't see a way that we can win here..." Edward said this with his fist on the table.
"We just need to think together, and one day everything we both want will be ours, my love." Ada said as she wrapped her arms around Edward.
Edward turned around and kissed her "You are right; one day we both will make that bitch and her family pay."
