Chapter 48: Ball (3)

Izek tried to contain his shocked expression but he failed, for a miserable second he flinched, and August noticed that.

And with an even voice he tried to pretend, "Guardians? I don't know what you are talking about"

August chuckled a bit, "You don't need to pretend, I know you're lying" Then he pointed to his eyes, "You see, my eyes can discern truth from lies, it's the ability of my Gate"

'He's a Guardian too…'

Izek contained his curiosity and swallowed all the questions he wanted to ask, "Such a convenient ability considering our current situation"

"How about you sit here, and then I prove to you that I can know if you're lying or not"

Izek did as he said and returned to his seat, and across from August, wearing a mask of indifference, Izek said, "I like coffee"

"True"

"I've already read all the pieces of ancient history that have been cataloged"

"True, impressive, I haven't read it all"

"I have time on my hands… I have never used my authority as noble to threaten someone"

August smirked, "Lie"

'Ok, those are easy to discover, people who are close to me know all that'

"I destroyed a corrupted spirit"

August glanced at him surprised, "Interesting, true"

"I have never met a demon"

"Wow, a lie, I thought they were extinct"

Izek ignored his comment and decided to finish this, "I know future events"

That got a shocked expression from him as he said, "True"

'He does can discern lies and trues'

"You know future events, is it related to your Guardian ability?"

To dodge his ability Izek answered, "Who knows?"

August chuckled, "You're indeed smart, so, now do you believe me?"

"Yeah, I believe you can discern true and lies, that or you have found a book telling my whole life"

He laughed once more, "I wouldn't have time to read, from what you told me, you have been leading quite a interesting life"

Then Izek asked, "What did you want to know asking if I was a Guardian?"

August breaths deep before answering, "I always suspected that you were one, I assumed your father made you one since you couldn't awaken"

Hearing those words Izek was taken back, "Wait, my father is a Guardian?"

"Yeah, you didn't know, how did you open the Gate?"

He didn't answer August's question and instead started processing the information in his head.

'Father is also a Guardian? How's that possible? Why didn't I know that, why were Guardians never mentioned in the novel?'

Izek tried to remember the novel's contents but then suddenly a pain struck his head. He tried to remember but the pain was too much, and he was taken from his thoughts by August's voice.

"Izekiel, what do you know about the Guardians?"

Izek sighed, "Almost nothing"

August confirmed it was true and then asked, "Can you tell me how you opened the Gate?"

He shrugged, "I don't know, I simply opened it"

August was astonished, "You simply opened it? You didn't acquire a key?"

Izek shook his head and then August stopped talking for a few seconds before.

Seeing his confusion Izek decided to ask, "Did I do something wrong?"

August then glanced at him and shook his head, "No, It's just that I never heard of it, I assume you don't know, but usually for someone to become a Guardian they need to use a key and then open the Gate"

'Is that so? That Librarian guy forgot me to explain about this key, in fact he didn't explained me a single thing'

Cursing Librarian in his mind, Izek asked, "As you can see, I don't know anything about Guardians, besides the fact that they exist, but I don't know what they do, how they do, why they do, and so on"

August nodded understanding him, "Well, it's my first time seeing someone who opened the Gate by themselves, so I guess I'm also learning something new, ask away, I'll answer your questions"

Hearing that, Izek immediately asked what he wanted to know most, "What are the Gates?"

"Every Guardian starts at the first Gate, and there are nine, each one you open you grow more and more powerful, quite similar to creating circles as Awakened, but I assume that's not what you want to know, you want to know about the function of the Gates, right?"

Izek nodded, so August continued, "What I explained are the Gates, what you want to know is about the Gateways, for someone to become a Guardian they need to receive, or acquire a key from a specific Gateway, and once you open the first Gate with the key, you will start walking the path of the Gateway that your key was from"

Izek looked at him with an expression telling him 'What a shit explanation, do it better'

"There are a lot of Gateways, for example, my Gateway is called Arbiter, but there are many others, like the Judge, Radiant Monk, Doctor of Light, Judgment, History, Nature, Nightmare and many others"

August takes a breath before continuing, "And these Gateways give you abilities related to their names, sometimes, for example as Arbiter I have the ability to see true and lies, but that's just one of the abilities of the Arbiter Gateway as long you keep advancing and opening the other Gates you will acquire more abilities"

Finishing his explanation he glanced at Izek and asked, "So, what's your Gateway?"

Izek lazily shook his head, "No idea"

August sighed, "I should have expected, tell me what are your abilities, perhaps I can identify it"

"I can see red strings, sometimes they tell me where to go, or what to do"

"Yeah, I also have no idea, sorry, I'll try look it up for you"

Then a notification came in his watch and he raised his arm to see, then he sighed, "It seems I need to go"

He raised from his chair and then told Izek, "Don't worry, this may seem a little crazy, Guardians things and all that, but I'll help you, after the ball I'll contact you, and then we'll have a proper conversation about it all"

Izek nodded and saw as August left the room. He stayed in the room for a few minutes thinking to himself.

'I met another Guardian, and it seems they are much near than what I imagined, August, and he even said my father is one'

"Let's not thinking too much, let's enjoy the ball, and after that, I'll get my answers"
