Chapter 18: Army reform

December 25, 1979.

Two weeks later, the Red Army successfully liberated all territory the orcs had occupied.

The streets and roads are littered with orc's dead bodies and also destroyed tanks and vehicles.

The battle did not go that well as most of the commander looked down on their enemy after finding themselves having such a big advantage.

Some of the orcs did not fall back like the others but instead ambushed the Red Army convoy from buildings and the forest.

Many weapons that have not been seen on the front line due to orcs' poor transportation have been used to ambush them.

Magic was also used, which able the orcs to easily destroy the Red Army tanks by detonating ammo that was stored inside.

The Red Army suffered great casualties due to this.

However, under the strong casualties-bearing capacity, the Red Army was still able to achieve their target, and eliminate at least 7 million orcs, the remaining those that did not encircle and some lone orcs escape back to their country. Taking them another week to fully eliminate all the remaining orcs that are still inside the Baltic States.

More and more reinforcement from Central Asia and the Far East has arrived.

Yet, they are still under penetrative attack by different creatures, like vampires in the night.

They have been building fortifications on the original borderline and also reconnaissance on the new landscape.

The only intel they have about their enemy is the one that was brought back by the 4 group army.

But, it is still far more than enough to understand their enemy.

How many more dragon knights do they have?

How many orcs are there?

Why do they want to invade the USSR?

If they can transfer to whole country to this world, can they also transfer a whole city to their country, or even transfer their troop to the USSR interior?

No one can answer these questions.

The four groups of armies have also started withdrawing their troops from the cities and towns that have been taken down by them as they are again under attack by different kinds of weird things.

Big worms that come out from the underground, with a big mouth that can swallow a whole tank.

Monsters that hide inside the river, attack troops when they are crossing.

Undead creatures with an eerie intelligence, carrying explosive charges and launching suicide attacks, targeting strategic points in the army's formation.

Unpredictable energy that creates zones of chaos. These energies are believed as magic, causing equipment malfunctions and disrupting technological advancements in the Red Army.

___

"We will set our current situation to three phases. First phase, we will build fortifications and collect more intel from our enemy, including the surface area of their country, the number of their army, landscape, and others. In this phase, we will only conduct small-scale company and platoon-level offensive operations.

In the second phase, we will gather at least six million troops along the 4,000-kilometer border from Murmansk to Odessa. We will also launch a new round of small-scale army reform at this stage according to our experience from the Battle of Leningrad and the Baltic States.

And the last phase, we will begin our counteroffensive action according to the intel we have collected. Here, I will say that our operation will most likely happen in the Leningrad and Baltic direction.

However, for the last phase, we will need at least one to three months to prepare, all according to intel we have collected."

In the Moscow Kremlin, a big meeting room, Orgarkov is speaking in front of everyone, behind him, is a big map showing the situation now.

The high command again starts another round of meetings, but this time, all the high-ranking officers of the Red Army have come, including those on the front line.

Brezhnev as usual, and some of the central committee members have also joined this meeting.

"In the battle of Leningrad, most of our radar has malfunctioned, we believe that is one of the tactics that is used by the undead. And from what our scientists have discovered proof, they found that during the battle, a kind of special wave appeared, they believe it is what disturbed our radar and made it malfunction.

We are also suspicious that these waves are how the dragon knights communicate with each other, and the explosion of Nuke can efficiently affect the wave.

So, I discussed with Comrade Ustinov about this situation, and both of us agreed that we would not conduct any big-scale military operation before we fixed this issue. Here, I will also ask Comrade General Secretary and Comrade Kosygin to put more resources into developing our electronic industry. "

The one who called Kosygin looked at Brezhnev and saw him nod his head.

"Comrade Marshal, we will try our best to fulfill your requirement."

The electronic industry has always been weak in the Soviet Union and even most of the Union Republic after the USSR dissolution. This is due to the wrong decision made by the Soviet government due to the planned economy.

The USSR did not have a fixed economy minister, all their economic decision were made collectively. One of them has an important influence now is Alexei Kosygin.

He was the one who made a great contribution to the Soviet economy, without his help after 1980, the economy in the Soviet Union have gone bad immediately. His economic reform in both 1965 and 1973 made the country's enterprise more efficient and productive.

However, his plan for the economy was also highly influenced by the General Secretary, Brezhnev. During the Brezhnev era, more resources were used on the Soviet Army, to fight for dominion against the United States.

"I will also start building a new generation of the army in a few of our divisions to fit the new form of war, it will include many advanced electronic devices. They may cost more to build one, but their combat effectiveness will be multiple of the original one, which will prevent them from having a similar situation in Leningrad."

In the original timeline, Orgarkov was the one who first came up with the idea of building a more modernized and new generation of Soviet Army with advanced technology to keep up with the evolution of modern warfare.

Including better weapons, equipment, and most importantly the communication system, which is also called information warfare. It was easy for the Red Army to achieve his idea as they already achieved most of the requirements inside his new military doctrine.

However, he also ran afoul of army officers who believed in a more traditional World War II style of warfare, and more importantly, his idea of reconstructing the huge, unwieldy Soviet military machine into a smaller, more compact strike force has touched too many people's interest.

But this time, in this timeline, his revolution in military affairs will not be stopped, but supported.

Orgarkov also understands that it is not possible to make the army into a smaller but impact strike force to defend such a long borderline now, so his reform will only limited to a few, and more experimental.

Brezhnev is happy with Orgarkov's plan and then asks Ustinov to sit down there.

"Comrade Ustinov, how is your situation, is everything ok?"

Ustinov that gets called quickly stands up and answers his question.

"Comrade General Secretary, we are currently conserving civilian industry to the military. We predict that our production will increase multiple in the next few months. A new military factory will also be built and done within the next few months. We will slightly adjust our original production plan according to the advice from Orgarkov and others."

He then continues to report a bunch of production numbers to everyone in the room.

"About the Red Navy Northern and Baltic fleet that has been stranded on the ground, we will think of a way to send them to Odesa, they will join the Black Sea after there. Similarly, The Pacific Fleet will be sent to Central Asia and form a new fleet.

Our closed military cities will also boost the progress of R&D on the original plan, I believe more advanced weapons will soon be produced and equipped in our army.

Besides, we are also improving our infrastructure in the Baltic States to able support the few millions of our army logistics by building more railways...."

Ustinov's reports continue for another half an hour.

He has experience in the post of the post of People's Commissar of Armaments during World War 2, so he knows what to do.

From this position, he supervised the massive evacuation of the defense industry from the besieged city of Leningrad to the east of the Ural Mountains. Over 80 military industries were evacuated that together employed over six hundred thousand workers, technicians, and engineers.

Stalin later rewarded Ustinov, whom he called 'the Red-head', with the Soviet Union's highest civilian honor, Hero of Socialist Labor.

After hearing his words, everyone nodded.

However, most of them found themselves having little knowledge about what Ustinov said.

Like what are the closed military cities he is talking about?

These are the cities that are especially built for the Soviet arms industry, and will not plot on the map. Only a few of them in this room will know about this. In the original timeline, they were exposed a few years later after the USSR dissolution.

"Comrade Ustinov, good job. Keep up the work."

Brezhnev then looked at other members and asked,

"Does anyone have anything to report?"

There was silence in response to him.

Since then, Brezhnev decided to continue to the next topic.

"Well then, I have great news to share with you all. "

He then looks at the foreign minister, Andrei Gromyko.

"Comrade Gromyko, could you share the news with all our gentlemen?"

"Sure, Comrade General Secretary."

Gromyko then stood up, looked at the people that surrounded him, and said,

"Yesterday, the Black Fleet Commander Nikolay Khovrin sent us a report, reporting that we had the first contact with the local countries in this world."

After listening to his words, the meeting room erupted with noisy discussions.

At the same time, on a train that was moving to Kyiv from Sevastopol, there was a group of people wearing noble military clothes that were different from the Soviets talking.

They were in a room that was specially arranged for them, discussing what they saw on the journey.

The metal bird flew in the sky with incredible speed that was faster than the dragon or even the flying knight.

The iron ship sailed on the sea, without even the need for any magic, or even sail.

Or even the train that the people here called, amazed them.

Their country has similar things like this, but will never reach such a fast speed and carry so many people and stuff.

They had seen how many things and people the train had carried on their journey.

"Just feel like came to an Isekai."

But one of them, a beautiful girl, with long silver hair, a slim body, and gold pupil.

Her face was full of worry.

Her name is Serina.

She was different from the other nobles that were inside the room, she came from a civilian family.

Serina was also the first female civilian that wear a noble military suit and come to another country while representing her country.

Her father hoped she would join the military when she was small. Serina didn't want to disappoint her father, so she made it her dream to join the army.

She studies hard in school and successfully gets into the Royal Military Academy.

Only very few civilians will be able to join this Academy.

Unexpectedly, during his magic training in the Academy, she has discovered her ability.

Seeing the energy stream of a country, which able her to predict what is going to happen in the future about this country. Due to her special ability, she was then sent to this special diplomatic delegation, to know intel.

Now, she is looking outside the train windows, faced with worry and shock.

In his eyes, she saw the sky was covered with majestic red energy, mixed with some other colors.

She was familiar with the other colors, knowing that those are the power of religions, but she had no idea about what is the red energy stream, as this is something that she has never seen.

"Where the hell does this country come from? What kind of monster are we discovering ?"

Such a question comes to her mind, looking at those metal birds that fly in the sky, and all the other things she has seen, making her mind a mess.

But, she still did not forget her duty, telling all her discoveries to the captain so that the captain could send them back to the country.

These nobles are from the human kingdom, Karak, the one that had been invaded by the orcs a few ten years before.

And the reason why they came here starts from two weeks ago.
