Chapter 3: First day of school
As Akul excitedly waited in front of the gate of the apartment complex waiting for his ride to take him to his destination, a haggard-looking man wearing torn clothes sitting on the side of the road in the dirt stared at him intently. The beggar stopped staring at Akul as a black minivan pulled in front of him.
The door slid open and behind was seated a dark fat boy with a dense beard on his face with thick glasses like that of Akul on his face. Akul's face lit up with a playful grin as he got in and closed the door behind him. He grinned and talked to his friend in a mischievous tone, "Yo, Mr. Aarav the Bear". Aarav replied with a grin and the in same mischievous tone, "Hello to you too, Mr. Akul the Skinny Bone". Hearing this Akul blankly stared at Aarav. Aarav replied with a scowling face. This continued for a few more seconds, and slowly a smile found its way on their face. The smile then turned into hysterical laughter. As both of them guffawed and supported each other, trying not to roll to the floor laughing their asses off, the other people sitting in the van looked at them with an annoyed expression.
After a few minutes, due to their disturbing laughing and joking around the driver of the van scolded them, "Will you two shut yer' trap". Aarav then said hardly controlling his laughter, "We better shut up otherwise the driver's gonna leave us out there stranded".Akul nodded his head in agreement while trying very hard to control himself from laughing. After taking a few moments, Akul looked at Aarav and said quietly, "You know I am very excited for today right?" Aarav answered in a mocking tone, "Yeah, Yeah I know why you're excited, you finally get to see Vaidehi after almost two month". Akul blushed and said meekly, "It's not like that, I am just excited to start a new academic year in a new place—". Aarav interrupted, "Yeah, a new academic year in a new place with Vaidehi". Aarav smirked looking at the beet-red face of Akul looking down at his feet mumbling. Aarav nudged Akul playfully and said, "Come on now don't blush that hard you are putting tomatoes to shame". Akul pinched Aarav's stomach and started tickling him. Aarav tried to stop him but his laughing rendered himself useless. The driver shouted, "I will not hesitate to kick you out and leave you brats here if you don't shut up". Akul stopped tickling Aarav. Both of them spent the rest of the trip silently listening to songs with their ear pods plugged into their respective phones.
After about 15 minutes the van came to a stop in front of a 5-story tall building. As Akul and Aarav stepped outside the van, they saw a crowd of students in orange t-shirts making their way through a mere 4-meter wide space toward the staircase of the building. Amidst that crowd, stood a girl of medium height, brown skin an athletic build with dark hair braided neatly. She wore cat-eyed glasses behind which were beautiful hazel-colored eyes that were the shape of lotus petals. Akul saw her and a sigh escaped his mouth only with the words, "Vaidehi".
Aarav just sighed and gestured for Akul to go on ahead. Akul rushed off after seeing the signal. As he ran forward a huge group of students got in front of him. He thought of shouting her name at the top of his lungs to get her attention but decided against it because he knew that he was an idiot but not that big one. As he pushed his way past them, Vaidehi had already reached the staircase. With the way ahead swamped with people Akul gave up and stood there with a gloomy face waiting for Aarav. Aarav came slowly and stood beside him and asked, "Couldn't get to her on time?" Akul replied sadly, "Yeah". Aarav said, "Don't worry you can always approach her in the breaks allotted to us between lectures, so let's just go upstairs". Akul agreed meekly," Yeah, let's go". Both of them shuffled along with the crowd towards the stairs. They walked up the stairs to the third floor. They then scanned their ID cards in a scanner that sent a message to their homes that they had entered the institute. They walked up to the room labeled as Room No. 303 and went in.
Both of them sat at the back of the class as there was no space left anywhere else. From the back of the class, Akul noticed that Vaidehi was sitting in the far left corner in the front of the classroom. He felt at ease knowing they were in the same class. The bell rang signaling the start of the first lecture. The teacher entered the class gave his introduction and started teaching physics. Akul took notes of what he was teaching and did not realize how fast time had passed. As the bell rang for the break, the teacher said goodbye and exited the classroom. Everybody started chattering among themselves, some students went outside.
Aarav and Akul also got up to go to the washroom. While walking in the corridor Aarav said, "You can go talk to her now, you know."Akul replied, "Yeah I will but first I gotta piss". Both of them went to the washroom, finished their business, washed their hands, and came back out. As they were walking Akul saw Vaidehi walking towards them and got a bit nervous. Seeing this Aarav smiled and said encouragingly, "Go get er' tiger". As Vaidehi neared Akul his heart beat so fast that he thought it would rip out of his chest. As they approached each other Akul waved his hand and only a measly "hello" came out of his throat. Vaidehi completely ignored him and kept walking while giving him the side eye. Akul asked Aarav, "Did she not hear me or what?" Aarav put his hand on Akul's shoulder and replied giving a sympathetic look, "Oh she heard you, but chose to ignore you". Akul's face dropped into that of despair but for some reason, his heart still beat too quickly. It felt like someone was beating gongs in his chest. Akul bent down holding Aarav's shoulder for support while hyperventilating. Aarav held Akul and asked in concern, "Are you ok dude?'. Akul said in a wheezing voice while gasping for air, "Can't breathe...…Call maa...….Probably an anxiety attack". Saying this he closed his eyes and fell to the ground with a loud thud.
