Chapter 16: History

Standing by the door of his class, Jordan took a deep breath as the automated door opened then he walked in.

The first person his eyes met was a girl with long white hair and ice-blue eyes. For a few seconds, they linked eyes in an awkward stare.

Aurora.

'Fucking fate!' Jordan cursed in his mind, seeing her in his class.

Of all the Twenty classes the recruits had been divided into, she was assigned this one. What a coincidence. He couldn't help but notice her hair which was as white as his. He remembered it to be raven black.

"Ah, you must be Jordan. Glad you can join us," the teacher said with a warm smile. "Please take a seat."

With his hands in his pockets and without saying a word to the young teacher, Jordan walked in. He scanned the class with his eyes for a free desk to sit at. He smirked when he realized that the only free desk was right of Aurora. There was a part of him that found it suspicious but he didn't much care. Different students murmured as Jordan walked passed to his seat.

"I'm telling you, he's the one!"

"Yh. Why else would he be in the med bay for almost three days?"

"He must think he's some kind of hero, saving the General's daughter. What an Idiot!"

Jordan took his seat, eyes fixed on the front of the class where the teacher stood. He could feel the gaze of the other students on him but decided to pay no attention to them. He had skipped some classes while at the med bay, but this was the first History class. Nothing was going to shake his focus; not Aurora and certainly not the dull comments of foolish teenagers.

"Settle down everyone. Let's get serious," the teacher started, silencing the noisy class. "Seeing as today's class is the first, why don't I begin by giving you guys the History of Mana? I'm sure many of you have been wondering where Mana came from because the History books tell us that the Earth didn't always have Mana flowing in it."

There were multiple variations of the story concerning the origin of Mana on Earth. Each was so different than the last that it had become impossible to know what actually happened. After all, it happened 100 years ago. Only a few people knew the truth.

"I know you guys have heard lots of fake stories, but I can assure you that this is the accurate tale; There were once three brothers who set out to dig a well in their farm. It was the dry season so water had become very scarce, their best option was to dig a very deep well to get enough water to sustain their crops and livestock. They took turns digging, but at a certain point, they discovered an obstruction in the whole."

The class had become completely silent as all the students listened to the teacher.

"Stop staring at me. It's distracting," Jordan said in a low voice.

Aurora quickly turned away, pretending to not have been looking at Jordan.

"The brothers tried everything they could to dig through the stone blocking the hole, but it proved very stubborn. They had gone too far to give up and start all over so they went out and gathered as many people as they could. They offered an attractive share of their livestock to anyone who could dig through the strange large stone in the ground. After a few days, a man was able to crack the stone. It was then that the farmers realized that indeed it wasn't a stone but a precious white crystal."

"As you would expect when the man saw the crystal, his interest in the share the farmers had offered him was gone. He wanted the entire land for himself, so he returned to murder the brothers so that he could steal their fortune. As the story goes, it was after blood was spilled over the white crystal that a beam of red light came out of it, ascending into the sky and turning the once-blue sky into the purple we now see above us. Ever since then, Mana has covered the face of the Earth, affecting both plant and animal life in it. That is the earliest account of the origin of Mana. For a fact, we know the essence of Mana came from the crystal. Any questions?"

"How do you know this? It could be just another lie. Surely you have some solid proof besides the words you read in a book?" Jordan called out to the hearing of everyone in the room.

The teacher's name was Dave. He had short blonde hair with a slightly muscular build. He looked to be in his early forties. He chuckled at Jordan's question. Everyone waited for his response.

"That's a very good question," Dave strolled to Jordan. "I know it's what happened because of the three brothers, one survived and is known to be the first Mage in History- Alexander Foxx." He turned to Aurora.

"My grandfather," she added.

"Woah!" the other students exclaimed, all eyes on Aurora.

"Interesting," Jordan commented with a smile. He had his emotions under control enough not to appear shocked.

"The rise of Mana into Earth's atmosphere is what we now refer to as the Great Mana Ascen," Dave resumed his lecture, walking around the class. "It didn't take long after that for Mana to change the world. Humans all over the world started to awaken the power of the elements and other rare affinities. Some scientists even regard it to be the first evolution of mankind in eons. For a few decades, everything was considerably fine. The people at the time focused on using their new abilities to better Human life."

"If that was the case, how then did this bloody war start?" a strange voice was heard from the back of the class.

Dave felt slightly annoyed for being interrupted but didn't show it. At least, it made him sure that the students were paying attention. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, a cold, emotionless voice resounded in the class.

"First it was gunpowder, then bombs, and until recently nukes. Humanity has always prided itself on its ability to wreck havoc. What did you expect would happen when we were presented with the most dangerous weapon of all, Mana?" Jordan turned back to the guy who had asked the question. "It was just a matter of time before we started to kill each other for it."
