Chapter 1: Prologue
There were no artificial lights around, yet it was a very bright night. The stars shone without interference, and the moonlight reflected on a lake.
"*cough* M1-R4 re... reporting in. The mission was *cough* a fa... failure."
A man was lying down by the lake. He had a slim build, and his body was covered with small but numerous wounds. Bleeding from his mouth, he tried to contact his associates.
"The in... Formation obtained wa..s wrong. Thi..s was al... all a trap to lure me ou..t."
He kept bleeding from his mouth, he could only stutter as tried to make his message intelligible. Luckily, the other side could make sense of what he was trying to say.
"M1-R4, this the HQ. Your assassination attempt provided us with plenty of information. Feel proud."
The voice on the other side was praising him, yet the tone of it was but frigid cold, empty of all emotion.
"...Agent M1-R4, you have successfully completed 258 missions domestically and 1041 missions globally. Your service has helped save hundreds of millions of your fellow citizens, yet no one will ever know of your achievements or even your very own existence."
The voice kept talking, as if reading from an epithet on a grave stone. Agent M1-R4, a government agent, had successfully completed numerous missions, saving countless lives. Yet, his service remained shrouded in secrecy...
"You know what you should do. Do you have any last requests?"
'What I should do? Ah, yes. "The final act", was it?'
The man silently listened to the voice. He reached into his pocket bag and grabbed a circular shaped object.
'Haha, I always laughed at those amateurs who got caught outside... how could I have known that my ending wouldn't be any different. What a fickle fate!'
With a wry smile, he pressed a button on the circular object, a dark humor present even in his final act. The impending explosion loomed, a culmination of a life lived in the shadows.
'I will finally learn how it feels to be in the middle of an explosion... guess not retiring to the backlines has its perks'
"La..st request... ye-yes I do have one. Pl..ease.. de-"
"Yes, go on."
"-lete my... browser d..ata."
"... M1-R4, goodbye."
'Sorry %$#%$#... I just had to make that joke... but I assume I will not be able to apologize to you in person...'
"Take... care..."
"..."
The voice cut off little after the man lying by the lake bid his goodbyes. The man look up at the sky as he kept his fingers pressed on the button.
'I really messed up big this time huh... but at least some valuable information was obtained. I could really die with no regrets...'
He stared at the moon as his grip started to weaken. He looked upon the stars as he thought for a one last time.
'... I wish...'
Yet, he had no more energy to finish those thoughts. Just as he lost consciousness, his grip finally gave in, and his fingers let go of the button.
*BOOM*
What followed next was an explosion that wiped at 5 meters radius around the man, and reduced everything in it to nothing but ashes.
At least, that is what was expected to to happen. However, after the gas cloud settled down, there remained a golden colored leaf right under where the man should have been.
*swoosh*
As if it's jobs had been completed, the leaf withered and turned into dust. Taken by the wind, flowed into the sky, never to be seen again...
