Chapter 17: The Detective

There is a mistake that is repeated by those who try to understand Batman. Many think Batman's best aspect is his martial prowess and his tactical mind. In truth, Batman's best aspect is that he is the world's greatest detective. He solves mysteries.

When he was young, he witnessed the death of his parents, but the man who did it was unknown. In the moment Bruce Wayne saw his parents die, he became Batman.

Two fires eternally fuel his crusade.

1. The question of who killed his parents.

2. Protect others from sharing his fate.

Although he eventually discovered their murderer was a small-time hood named Joe Chill, that fire still burns.

A human can't wipe out evil from the universe, but sometimes what is harder to bear than an evil act is the question of who has done this act.

The mystery of the origin of pain. Therefore, Batman's true goal isn't vengeance that's the Ghost Rider's job. It isn't the wrath of god, like Spectre.

Batman's singular purpose is to discover "who did it." The mysterious origin of pain is more burdensome to the heart than the loss of someone precious. It creates fear, will this unknown come for me or others I love? Who should I focus my hate and loathing on?

Batman isn't a fighter, he is a detective. He solves mysteries and reveals their solutions to others. He is Zaphenath-Paneah, the revealer of secrets.

A slightly beat-up dark blue Chevrolet Equinox drives through New York City. It's a car that no one would think twice about, but inside, it's like sitting in the middle of a cockpit.

At the moment, Batman, dressed in the guise of a fifty-something private eye is talking with someone, "There are 37 missing mutants. Any results from Cerebro?"

"Cerebro can't locate them, something is blocking it," Professor X responds.

"How do you know those mutants are still alive," Batman asks.

"I don't, I hope they are," Professor X responds.

"Understood, I'm following some leads. We'll talk later, Batman out."

"Why didn't you tell the Professor that we're close to solving the case?" MJ, who is sitting next to Bruce, asks. She's also wearing the disguise of a forty-something-year-old woman.

"I don't want to build up his hopes, plus, the fewer who know the less chance of a leak," Batman answers the question.

"You mean you don't trust Professor X?" MJ presses Batman.

"Anyone can make a mistake. It's better to play things close to the vest," Batman patiently answers MJ's questions.

"Tonight, your job is to observe. Stick to the shadows. Don't act no matter what you see. The most important thing for detectives is to observe, collect facts, and move the investigation forward," Batman explains.

"What if you get into a fight and need help?" MJ asks.

"Then I've failed as a detective. There is a time to use your mind and a time to use your fists. Do you think I taught you kids stealth because I wanted you to beat up people better?" Batman asks.

"Yes, I think that's what all of us thought," MJ responds.

"Stealth is good for lots of things, but when you are investigating it's useful to keep people unaware of your progress and location. Your opponent will do their best to keep you in the dark. You should pay them the same courtesy.

There are times when you need to confront someone and interrogate them, but forceful interrogation is one of the most unreliable means of gathering reliable information," Batman explained.

MJ didn't ask any other questions, but she kept touching her face.

Is the photostatic veil uncomfortable?" Batman asks.

"I'm not used to wearing it, it feels strange. I can't believe how convincing it is, I look like I'm forty!" MJ looked in the mirror.

"It's pretty handy, but you should also learn traditional disguise techniques. It's a mistake to rely on technology too much. Sometimes it isn't available, and you need to disguise yourself," Batman continued to explain.

"Explain to me where we are going and what we're looking for," Batman glances at MJ out of the side of his eye.

"We're heading to the doc to confirm the shipping route of the kidnapped mutants. The Kingpin is believed to be behind the kidnappings, but we still don't know who his client is," MJ answered.

"Why confirm the shipping route?" Batman asked.

"It can lead us to Kingpin's client."

"Why not go to Kingpin and get the information?" Batman asked.

"We have a lot of experience with Kingpin, he doesn't talk. It's too much work for very few gains. It's easier to follow the money than to try and force someone to oust their patron," MJ concluded.

"Good," Batman praised.

"May I ask a question?" MJ adjusted herself in her chair and looked at Batman.

"What?"

"Why am I the only person with you?"

"You have the most potential as a detective. The others have their strengths," Batman gave a flat response.

"Like what?" She asked.

"You tell me," Batman threw it back to her.

MJ thought for a little while before responding.

"Peter's got great leadership, Harry's the tactician, Ned is good at tech support and hacking, Gwen is the team medic, Mary Jane is good with disguises and infiltrations. As for Miles...I don't know, he's just a little kid, probably the smartest out of all of us, but easily distracted," MJ gave a quick analysis.

"Not bad, but you should know that Miles is the sneakiest and the best at tracking. You should also think about the capabilities of your teammates with more depth.

Consider their weaknesses too, and you should spend more time learning human psychology, memory techniques, and soft interrogation techniques for starters," Batman listed a few suggestions, but not many.

"Alright, we're here, use your shadow powers to merge with the darkness and keep to them. Focus on being invisible," Batman said.

"If I do that, what's the point of this disguise?" MJ asked.

"Observe, don't talk, and do as I say," Batman ignored her question and exited the car. MJ rolled her eyes but got out of the car and merged with the shadows.
