Chapter 30: Split
Batman woke as his body tumbled. The Batsuit stabilized the tumble and he was able to see his surroundings. His eyes widened as he watched the insanity of spaceships attacking one another. From ships the size of cities to those as small as single-pilot fighters, the chaos of war surrounded him.
The ships weren't familiar to him. They neither aligned with those from the S.H.I.E.L.D. database for alien spaceships nor matched the ships he was familiar with from his original universe.
He assessed his environment and pinged the other combat suits. The person closest to him was Dr. Banner, but when he found him visually, he was already transformed into the Hulk. The battle suit matched his size, but the Hulk crashed into a mid-sized ship.
The impact of the Hulk caused minor damage to the ship, but his body may have penetrated the ship. Batman activated his rockets to fly to the Hulk's ship. The one he was the most concerned about was his son. He didn't see his son anywhere, but the locator indicated he was nearby.
The H.U.D. in his helmet gave a map for everyone. They spread throughout space pretty far. Some were floating in space, still unconscious. Others were able to make it to one spaceship or another.
"This is Batman, make your way to the nearest ship. Please acknowledge with a single ping if you received the message. He received most of the pings, but Robin, Bat-Spider Woman, Human Torch, and Gwen didn't respond.
Batman joined the Hulk on his ship, and when he appeared, the Hulk was throwing a tantrum. He kept punching and kicking the ship.
"Hulk, let's go inside," Batman said.
The Hulk saw Batman and roared at him. Batman didn't make a move other than to reveal his face and talk.
"Mr. Hulk, please, if we stay out here I might get killed. Help me," Batman said.
The Hulk calmed down enough to look around. It looked like the Hulk wanted to jump-attack one of the starfighters.
"Sir, please, he must get inside. If one of those lasers hit me I'm done, I need your help," Batman said. He turned away and walked toward the rear of the ship. The Hulk followed and while he followed he calmed down. Eventually, Batman heard over his speaker.
"Batman...we're in the middle of a war!" Dr. Banner spoke.
"Welcome back Dr. Banner. Let's enter this ship as quickly as we can.
Banner felt four robotic arms extend from his suit and make contact with the ship. He was carried by these arms.
"What are these?" Dr. Banner asked.
"Octoarms thanks to a man at my company named Dr. Octavius. Brilliant man, but a little kooky," Bruce answered.
"Okay, why aren't you letting me walk?" Dr. Banner asked.
"Would you prefer to risk losing your footing and flying into space?" Batman asked.
"Then why don't you use octoarms?" Dr. Banner asked.
"I am, but mine are much thinner and run throughout my cape. My shoes are also magnetized. If you don't mind, I'm trying to figure out how to gather our team, and that includes my son who isn't responding," Batman informed Dr. Banner who stopped talking.
Eventually, they found an entrance port on the mammoth ship. They dropped through the ceiling, and the battlesuits indicated the air was breathable. Batman found a hallway terminal and used one of his octoarms to jack into the access port.
Batman shared selected files with Dr. Banner. "I've updated the suits with a translation program. I've uploaded the basic or common language and our suits should be able to translate for us," Batman said.
Their battle suits changed becoming more like clothing, but each of them had a battle helmet.
"These are the uniforms of the soldiers on this ship. We need to get to one of the ship bays and capture a ship," Batman said.
"Why? Shouldn't we stay here?" Dr. Banner asked.
"No, we need to collect the others and try to get away from this battle. It has nothing to do with us. I'm worried for my son and the others. Dr. Banner, I know it's asking a lot, but I could use your help," Batman said.
"Of course, tell me what you need," Dr. Banner said.
"For now, I need you to stay near me, I can't relax until we are out of here with our friends. I'm learning how to fly the most common ships here. You should go ahead and take a look as well.
"Ah, I'll take a look," Dr. Banner said.
"Once their conversation was over, Batman led the Hulk down two levels to find a ship or ships.
They appeared on the largest ship bay, Batman moved swiftly, followed by Dr. Banner, to a cargo ship. Batman used the octoarm in his cape to break into the ship. Once they were in, Batman figured out how to fly the ship. He and Dr. Banner sat in the pilot and co-pilot ship. Eventually, the ship lifted off the ground and flew toward the exit, and flew into space. Now, they could rejoin the search for their people.
