Chapter 32: Friends

Aboard a medical frigate, Bobby and Johnny lay in beds with monitors. A robot examines both men but is puzzled.

"What's the status of these two," A man in a yellow, white, and green flight suit asks the six-foot-tall medical robot with blue and silver paint indicative of its class.

[These two beings are strange, sir. One's temperature is high enough to turn a typical organism into a vegetable. However, his life signs are stable.

The other being has a temperature well below what a living organism can maintain.

I am uncertain of how their physiology works in exact detail...]

"Can you tell if they're going to live or die?" the man asked.

[Assuming other aspects of the physiology of the pair is the same as a human, which they appear to be, there is a good chance for recovery.]

"Good, keep me informed. I'd like to know who they are and why they were floating in space," he said.

[Captain Guda, perhaps their starship was destroyed?]

"I found them floating in an ice-sphere, there wasn't a ship or even the remains of a ship near them. I want to know the minute they awaken, D0c," the man commanded the robot and took one more look at the strange pair before leaving.

[As you command, sir.]

The ship rumbled and shook. The patients on the beds were locked onto their beds, but one of the beds caught fire while the other froze. The D0c robot rushed to the two strange patients and took readings.

It tried to put out the fire, but even using typical fire retardant devices, the flames grew hotter until the bed melted.

The medical robot also stepped back, its system told it that the heat was more than its body could tolerate.

[I am sorry patient 0, the heat index is increasing, I will need to eject you from the medical bay. The robot reached for its controls when a new alarm went off. It observed as its body began to freeze, from the bottom of its feet until its neck.]

A living ice sculpture moved from behind the robot. It looked at the flames and surrounded the burning man in ice. The ice would melt into water and evaporate, but more water condensed around the burning man.

Eventually, the melting and burning reached a balance.

"Man, Johnny, we're in trouble. You've got to wake up," Bobby said as he looked at the ice capsule.

The medical robot could only turn its head.

[Sir, please release me. I have patients who need my help,] D0c said. Bobby looked at the automaton quizzically. He shook his head and signed toward his ears while saying something in a language the robot was unfamiliar with.

Its internal communication system reached out to the ship's network. A few moments later, another robot appeared. It waddled to Bobby who watched it with wariness.

The robot wanted to engage him in dialogue, but at first, Bobby was reluctant. He, along with the robot began talking and pointing and to his surprise, the robot began using English.

As the discussion continued, the robot's understanding of English deepened and it even mirrored non-verbals. Eventually, the robot began to speak English like a native speaker.

During this period of communication, the ship continued to rumble and shake. Once Bobby felt the robot and he could talk he shifted the conversation.

"My friend is okay, he's unconscious," Bobby explained.

The robot he spoke with translated Bobby's question to the medical robot. It also updated D0c in Bobby's native language.

[Sir, what about the rising temperatures?] D0c asked.

"Those will come down. I've seen him like this before when his body and mind were overly stressed. As long as I am here, I can contain his heat. No one here will be affected. He'll wake up eventually, trust me," Bobby said.

[Very well, so long as you can contain his heat then I am obligated to continue his care. If, however, you are unable to keep him from harming others, I will be forced to send him away.] D0c said.

"Send him away?"

[Eject him into space.] D0c clarified. Bobby didn't like the sound of it but he nodded in acceptance.

The ship shook even more violently this time. It felt like something crashed into the ship.

{All hands to battle station, prepare to repel infiltrators. Armed resistance is authorized.} The speaker boomed instructions and the translating robot explained things to Bobby, he felt something stir within the ice capsule.

Releasing a relieved smile, the ice retreated from Johnny who sat up looking around.

"What's going on?" Johnny asked.

"We're under attack," Bobby responded.

"Oh, in that case, it's good that I woke up," Johnny smiled.

"Why did you pass out, are you okay?" Bobby asked.

"Yeah, there's something strange in the energy here, my body needed time to adapt," Johnny said.

"The energy, why would energy affect you?" Bobby asked.

"My flames aren't infinite, I need to draw in energy resources from the area around me to keep things charged up. It's usually passive, but in battle my need to absorb increases," Johnny explained.

"Ok, we can talk about it later, for now, we should show our gratitude to our rescuers by defending their ship," Bobby suggested. Johnny nodded.

"We'll protect the medical ward from outside," Bobby explained to the two robots.

"Thank you, sirs, please be careful," the robot said.

Bobby and Johnny walked out of the medical unit and saw black and white armored soldiers rushing down the hallway shooting every person they came upon.

Bobby and Johnny looked at one another before unleashing endless ice shards, heat bombs and flame attacks at the incoming enemy soldiers.
