Chapter 6: Dinner is mine

Mia stirred from her brief nap in the evening and observed the scene in the living room. Alex and Emma were engaged in a casual conversation over coffee.

"Why didn't you guys invite me?" Mia approached the table, injecting a playful tone into her question.

"You were sleeping," Alex explained with a small smile.

"Hello! I'm Emma, Lily's mother," Emma introduced herself, extending a friendly greeting.

"I know! You both look alike!" Mia observed with a hint of amusement, acknowledging the resemblance between Emma and Lily.

"And I'm Mia, living across this flat. Nice to meet you," Mia added, offering a friendly gesture of introduction.

"Thanks for taking care of my daughter," Emma expressed her gratitude, her eyes reflecting genuine appreciation.

"Technically, she takes care of us both. We enjoyed it a lot today," Mia chimed in, underlining the shared camaraderie.

"So you guys are lovers?" Emma asked, her curiosity evident as she inquired about the nature of the relationship between Alex and Mia.

"No!" both Alex and Mia responded in unison, a touch of surprise in their voices as they clarified the nature of their connection.

As the hands of the clock continued their relentless march, Emma gently lifted the sleeping Lily and made her way back to their apartment. The subdued atmosphere settled once more in Alex's flat.

Mia, appreciative of the brief camaraderie, expressed her gratitude. "Thanks for allowing me into your room."

Alex, still carrying the echoes of their shared moments, replied with a touch of humor, "Well, you made me food. So, it's even now."

"Bye!" Mia bid farewell, leaving the apartment with a wave of finality. As the door closed, the remnants of laughter and lively exchanges dissipated, and the living space returned to its silent state.

The familiar solitude settled back in, and Alex, now alone again, sensed a subtle shift in the atmosphere. The warmth that had briefly graced his usually solitary abode began to wane, and the remnants of his smile gradually faded. The clock ticked away, marking the passage of time until it was 7:30 PM.

As the evening unfolded, Alex decided to prepare and have his dinner. However, before he could settle into his routine, the doorbell rang once more. Curious, he went to check, and to his surprise, Emma was waiting for him outside, holding yet another container.

"Again?" Alex questioned, a mixture of surprise and curiosity in his voice.

With a warm smile, Emma explained, "My daughter mentioned you've been indulging in a lot of junk food. Here, take this." She offered him the container.

Expressing his gratitude, Alex added, "But it's too much for you to help me daily."

Emma's smile persisted as she replied, "You're my friend now. Can't I do at least this for you?" Her genuine kindness was undeniable.

Alex, touched by her gesture, couldn't resist accepting the container. As Emma left with a playful smirk, she added, "If you want to enjoy this food, you can visit my home daily." The invitation hung in the air.

After finishing dinner, Alex's phone rang. As he reached into his pocket to answer, he saw that it was his half-sister, Isabelle. Contemplating for a moment, Alex decided to decline the call, choosing to keep the barriers intact, and then went to sleep.

As the sun rose on a new day, Alex found himself heading to work with a renewed sense of energy. The encounters with Emma, Lily, and Mia had left an indelible mark on his usually reserved demeanor. Sophie, his perceptive work colleague, was quick to notice the shift.

"You seem a bit happier today," she observed, raising an eyebrow as she glanced at Alex.

Caught off guard by the observation, Alex attempted to deflect, "What? No, nothing's changed. Just the usual."

Sophie, however, was not one to be easily fooled. She leaned in, her eyes narrowing playfully, "Come on, I've known you for a while. Something's different. Spill it."

Reluctantly, Alex let out a small sigh. "Well, maybe a few things have changed," he admitted, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

Sophie grinned, sensing that there was more beneath the surface. "Ah, so there's a secret happiness brewing. I knew it!"

As the workday unfolded, Sophie couldn't help but inquire further during their lunch break. "Seriously, Alex, you've been humming a tune. What's going on?"

Alex, realizing that he couldn't keep it to himself, decided to share a glimpse of the recent events. "Just some unexpected friendships, I guess. They've added a bit of color to the usual grayscale of my life."

Sophie's eyes widened in delight. "Friendships, huh? Do tell!"

Alex recounted the encounters with Emma, Lily, and Mia, highlighting the laughter, the shared moments, and the warmth that had entered his life. Sophie listened attentively, a supportive grin on her face.

In the evening, as the workday concluded, Sophie extended an invitation. "Let's celebrate your newfound happiness. Dinner's on me. How about some ramen?"

Alex hesitated for a moment, not accustomed to such social engagements, but the genuine kindness in Sophie's offer convinced him. "Sure, why not?"

The night air felt crisp as Alex and Sophie strolled through the neighborhood, the glow of streetlights casting a warm ambiance around them. Having completed their dinner at the local restaurant, the echoes of laughter and shared stories lingered in the air.

"Thanks for the dinner, Sophie!" Alex expressed his gratitude.

"It was too good," Sophie replied, a contented smile playing on her lips.

As they walked, the initial plan for Alex to head home alone took an unexpected turn. "Can I walk you to your place?" Alex suggested, breaking the comfortable silence.

Sophie considered for a moment before declining, "No, I live near here."

"Okay," Alex nodded, starting to walk towards his home. However, in a spontaneous move, Sophie reached out and grabbed his arm. "I changed my mind," she announced.

Alex and Sophie continued their journey, the night becoming a backdrop for their casual conversation and shared laughter. The distance seemed to shrink as they found common ground in their stories and experiences.

Finally, they reached Sophie's place. "Wanna come in?" she offered.

"No, I'll visit next time," Alex politely declined, a hint of a smile on his face.
