Chapter 2: Misery Strikes

My eyes open hesitantly, bright light shining down upon me. I wince, covering my face with my hands as I hear the light short circuit, the room going dark. I pull myself out of bed, my hand pressed against my back as I whine quietly. "My back is killing me," I mutter. My tired eyes gaze around the room, my heart beginning to pound in my chest as I realize I'm somewhere unfamiliar, only settling when I realize I'm in a hospital room. My eyebrows furrowed at the sight of the boarded up windows and sealed shut doors. I press my hand against my chest, breathing heavily as I try to calm myself. A note on the counter catches my eye, I hesitantly make my way to it, pulling the Iv stand along with me. Picking up the note, I scan it quickly. It says, "urgent patient admission on 12/10/23," I stared blankly at it, my eyes immediately looking for some kind of date. I wander around the room, eventually finding my phone. I sigh, "Dead," I always carry a spare charger on me due to my colleagues repeatedly stealing those I keep at my desk. I inserted the plug into my phone. A dim charging symbol popped up as I set it down. I go and change into the clothes I was wearing previously, the smell of alcohol and sweat stinging my nose before I rush back over to my phone, turning it on I see that it's February 27th, 2034. My head spins for a moment, "What is this?.." the radioactive blast returning to my memory, the grief returning once again.

I search on the web to try and figure out what has happened. The last post was six years ago. Apparently this was all caused by Russia and North Korea, they had sent a missile to nuclear plants all across America. Intentionally causing more nuclear explosions. They kept raining down hell upon us until everyone was obliterated then turned their wrath towards other countries. After a great fight, only Russia and North Korea remained. Turns out they had both planned to betray one another from the beginning, explosives lined every inch of their cities and they had poisoned the water supply, leading to the downfall of their countries.

And that is how I ended up here, I found the little food I could that by some miracle hadn't gone bad and have organized a small space I spend most my time in. Most of the hospital was boarded up when I first woke up, only some radiation had gotten in, enough I could survive. I spent most my time reading fliers and things I found in the faculty's old belongings. I gained weight fairly quickly over the past three months, being very sparing with my food and outings. The days have been long and exhausting, I hardly get any sleep, everyday I imagine my boys would be over the moon to be staying in a hospital overnight. Their mischievous giggles and sweet smiles, how I miss them. I rub my temples, sighing heavily.
