Chapter 3: This is my first time

Now that Olivia Turner had gone upstairs, Clark had the chance to inspect the surroundings. The ground floor consisted of a living room and a kitchen, while the bedrooms were likely on the second floor. However, Olivia Turner had made it clear that he couldn't go upstairs to check.

After a while, Olivia Turner came back down. "I've checked the structure of this house. Downstairs is what you've seen — the kitchen and the living room. Upstairs is the bedroom. But you can't go up there. I'll take a look in the fridge to see if there's anything to eat. I'll rest upstairs later, and you can sleep in the living room."

Her tone was authoritative, as if she was making a declaration rather than engaging in a discussion. "Why not? Don't I have the right to decide?" Clark protested.

"Look at yourself. Do you even look human?" Olivia Turner replied calmly.

"You! I..."

Clark was left speechless, unable to argue further. Olivia Turner smiled triumphantly and went to the fridge, hoping to find some food. However, upon opening it, she discovered that it was completely empty.

"Looks like we'll go hungry," Olivia Turner sighed. She had no other choice. Going out to search for food was too risky.

Clark snorted and looked around. Suddenly, he spotted a potted plant that seemed to be growing something familiar. He walked over, emptied the pot, and indeed found potatoes.

Quickly cleaning and frying them, the aroma filled the entire house.

"Rumble!"

Olivia Turner's stomach growled. "How did you know there were potatoes in the flowerpot?" she asked in a hushed tone. Unable to resist her hunger, she added, "Can I have a little?"

Clark arranged the cooked potatoes on the table, picked up two for himself, and started eating. Olivia Turner approached, feeling a bit embarrassed. Eventually, she extended her hand and took one potato.

"It's so delicious!" Olivia Turner couldn't help but say, "Are you good at cooking?"

"This is my first time!" Clark chuckled, enjoying the food.

"You..." Olivia Turner paused, clearly feeling a bit awkward but not exploding like before.

Under these circumstances, eating until full was impossible. Olivia Turner didn't finish the potato but intentionally saved two for later.

"You can go rest upstairs," Clark suggested lazily, stretching and sitting comfortably in the chair.

Olivia Turner looked at Clark with a complex expression, hesitated for a moment, and then went upstairs without saying a word.

"Never thought being alone with a woman would be so awkward," Clark mumbled to himself. Once Olivia Turner was upstairs, he finally breathed a sigh of relief, lounging on the chair. He was truly exhausted.Waking up surrounded by zombies, rescuing Olivia Turner, and now, it feels like a dream. The sky gradually darkens, and it's strangely quiet all around.

"Ding! System alert, approaching danger!" The system suddenly speaks up.

Clark jumps up from his chair and looks out the window. In the dark night, many figures are slowly moving towards him, illuminated by the lights.

"Oh no, why are there so many zombies coming this way?" Clark is shocked as he realizes that all the approaching figures are indeed zombies.

"System, didn't you say these zombies wouldn't detect us?" Clark hastily asks.

The system remains silent.

"Even you're bullying me!" Clark stomps his feet in frustration. However, there's no way around it. Outside, the building is completely surrounded by zombies.

Originally, these zombies were aimlessly wandering around the outside of the house. However, after a whistle sounded, all the zombies, as if receiving a command, started moving towards the building.

"Thud, thud, thud." The foremost zombie begins to forcefully pound on the door.

Clark brings chairs and tables to block the doors and windows, preventing the zombies from breaking in.

"The zombies are besieging us!" Olivia Turner runs down at this moment. Seeing Clark holding the door, she seems to have something to say but can't find the words.

The number of zombies outside is too overwhelming. Under constant attacks and pounding, Clark is about to give in.

"This is just too unlucky!" Clark firmly holds the door, knowing he can't last much longer.

"I'll break out later. See how long I can hold them off. You, take the chance to escape. Don't worry about me!" Clark shouts at Olivia Turner.

He can use the smoke dispersal once more. With so many zombies outside, it's impossible to put them down in one go. Clark decides to create an opportunity for Olivia Turner to survive.

Olivia Turner looks at Clark in disbelief.

"Ding! The system detects that the beauty has developed feelings for the host and rewards accordingly!" At this moment, the system's voice rings out.

"Perfect timing! Quickly, show me what the reward is!" Clark is so happy that he almost bursts into laughter.

"Teammate illuminating flare, when launched, can bring a nearby teammate to help!" The system replies casually and then asks, "Do you want to launch it now?"

Teammate? Clark is momentarily confused. Does he have other companions here?

Just as he hesitates, the zombies outside intensify their attacks. The door has been pushed open slightly, and a decaying hand has even reached in, grabbing aimlessly.

"Launch it quickly!" Clark shouts loudly.

Olivia Turner doesn't know what Clark is yelling about but thinks he can't hold on much longer. She runs down to help him with the door.

Swoosh! A sharp sound. An illuminating flare is shot from the roof, exploding like a firework in the night sky, emitting a dazzling white light.

Under the illumination, the densely packed zombies outside appear eerie, but they can't stop or even raise their heads to look up.

"It's over! We've been completely exposed!" Clark thinks trouble is coming. With the rise of this white light, who knows how many zombies it will attract!

"I'm running out of strength!" Olivia Turner says laboriously, even starting to tremble.

"Later, do as I said before. I'll distract them, and you run for your life!" Clark grins at Olivia Turner.

Is it worth doing this for a woman he's not really familiar with? He doesn't know, but he has to do it.

"Boom!"

Just as Clark is about to charge out and fight the zombies, a fire suddenly appears outside the window.

A flame, like a fire dragon, rushes in from the outer edge of the zombie circle, engulfing several zombies in flames.

During the day, Clark already knew that these zombies aren't afraid of injuries. Even if their heads are smashed, they can still move. Would they be afraid of fire?

The zombies enveloped in flames struggle for a moment and then fall to the ground, quickly turning into ashes.

The remaining zombies, seemingly instinctively, scatter in all directions, afraid of the flames. However, as the zombies become chaotic, as if receiving some kind of command, they start gathering together again, with coordinated movements, unlike the aimless wandering Clark observed during the day.

But now, the zombies' target doesn't seem to be Clark and Olivia Turner anymore. Instead, they are focused on something on the opposite side.

The flame reappears, and in its light, Clark finally sees a person standing in the darkness on the other side. The person is wearing a full protective suit, carrying a large bottle resembling an oxygen tank on their back and holding something like a water gun from which the flames are emitted.

The zombie horde charges towards the person, who doesn't evade but instead starts spewing flames. Dozens of zombies are quickly engulfed in flames, turning the tide of the battle.

"Good job, well done!" Clark claps the door frame, excitedly shouting.

"This is the Human Survivor Alliance!" Olivia Turner recognizes the identity of the person.

"Alliance?" Clark looks at Olivia Turner with some confusion.

"The surviving people in the world have formed the Human Survivor Alliance. This is the first time I've seen a real member." Olivia Turner explains, sharing all she knows.

Most of the zombies outside have fallen into the sea of flames, gradually turning into ashes.

James looks around, making sure there are no more zombies, and then walks towards Clark and the others.

He appears cautious, approaching slowly.

"Hello!" Olivia Turner softly calls out to the person standing at the door.

"Who?" James picks up his weapon, aiming at the door, "Are you human or a zombie?"

"I'm human!" Olivia Turner quickly explains.

Clark originally wanted to say he's human too, but thinking about his current appearance, he keeps silent.

"Then open the door and come out!" James still holds his weapon, not relaxing his guard.

Creak!

The door is pushed open, and Olivia Turner slowly walks out from inside.
