Chapter 3: Case 0
As we walked through the floors of the laboratory I couldn't stop but think about what he said just a few minutes ago. Case 0? What does that mean?
Does it have something to do with a number 0? I thought they wouldn't exist. I thought it's just something to tell your childrens
I've heard stories of mothers saying to their children something like: "You have to finish your breakfast or else a number 0 comes"
But it would make perfect sense why he would need me. If this "Case 0" is so dangerous that it would kill people when they come close.. of Course they would need an immortal guy.
I sigh exhausted as I make my steps behind the professor. Where are we even going?
"Is this case 0 a number 0? How did you catch something rare as that? I thought it was just a legend."
I say confused. I've had a long day and I'm exhausted from the experiments. I'm not sure if I'd like to die another time today.
At first he doesn't respond to my question. But after a few steps of walking and a good minute of silence he responds to me, but without turning around.
"Case 0 is one of the most secret cases we've ever had. We've never had a number 0 before in our laboratory and it's a pleasure to have one hear. But too many guards are too scared to even get to it. We got it a few days ago, but we weren't able to feed it. We don't want that it dies so fast that's why I need you to take care of it. If it doesn't speak human language then teach it how to speak. If it's hungry feed it. That's your job"
I was shocked when I heard that. I am supposed to babysit one of the most dangerous beings known that exists? Hah.. Haha... I don't Even know if I should laugh or cry.
Then I noticed something that he had said just now that seemed odd.
"Why to refer to this person as 'It'?"
He just laughs and looks at me like I just did the most pathetic joke he has ever heard.
"Jinsei. Those things are not human at all. Coras in General Are not humans. Why do you always say it like you are a human? You're more like a rat than a human. The only thing you are good for are experiments."
He smiles. It's the same smile that I despise so much.
"Especially not Number 0 Coras. They are far from human."
He says with a glare in his eyes. As if he despises them more than just normal coras.
"Do you know why you are a number 4 Cora, even though immortality is not dangerous at all?"
he ask me all of a sudden. I look at him confused, because I didn't really know how I should respond to that.
"Why should I know that? Do you mind telling me, professor?"
He laughs and actually responds.
"Haha we don't know either! The test results said you're a 4. No one expected that. You see... The number of a Cora is not always the most important. It's not the ability either. The laboratory thinks that even if you're ability doesn't seem that dangerous to others, it can be dangerous for everybody."
What he said didn't make sense at first, but maybe I was still too young to understand that. I am only 17 after all.
"What is the ability of the Case 0 Cora?"
I ask boldly. He isn't too offended thankfully. He must be In a good mood today, because normally he would punish me for even asking questions.
"It's complicated. The tests didn't have a clear result. It must be because it is a number 0 and the modern machines aren't build for that."
He responds calmly, as if he were talking to his colleague.
"Do you think he will try to attack me..?"
It wasn't like I was scared of it. I was rather really curious. I've never seen a real number 0 and I am almost excited to see what it looks like.
what am I even saying..? I almost sound like this disgusting old fat man who calls himself professor. I Hope i find the name out soon. I don't like saying "it" the whole time.
We arrived at a long corridor only one door at the end. The door looked heavy and unbreakable and it was surrounded by a handful of guards. There were no windows to the inside room, but I knew that this must be the room of the case 0.
"Protocol 049 case 0"
He talked to the guards and showed them a cart. I didn't see what was on the cart but they immediately opened the door.
it wasn't the room of the case 0 person. It was a room full of monitors. Probably for the cameras for the inside room, but the screens were all black.
probably because they don't want to show me what's inside before I go in. Makes sense to me.
The professor looked at me before giving me a quick hug, but then brushing his lab clothes of, as if he had just hugged dirt. Why does he even bother to hug me in the first place? I'm disgusted by his behavior anyway.
"Take Care Jinsei. Here is the food for it. If it asks any questions don't answer it. If it tries to talk to you by his own don't answer. But you have to find out more about it, okay? Just don't let it win the lead of the conversation."
As I nodded a second door opens right infront of me and he pushes me in, while closing the door right behind me.
My eyes couldn't believe what they saw..
