Chapter 8: Goblin Attack

[Time before the goblins attack: 3....2....1]

Torot!

A reverberating horn was heard by all inhabitants. Their very soul was shaken. Rolan and his men were inside the walls. Other men can't help but shiver in fear. They were just civilians a few days ago and here they were, in a war where they would die anytime soon.

"Shit, the war still has yet to begin but things are already going south. If only I got the skill of Leadership." Rolan was bitter inside but he did not regret choosing his skill Management. He could not wallow in despair yet as he still had to face the enemies in front of him.

"Archers! Fire in my command!" Rolan commanded, raising his sword.

They watched the enemies march towards them and they could already hear the rumbling mixed with the shrieking noises of the goblins. Drumming noises were heard as they marched.

They already have their siege engines of war. A battering ram, several ladders, a siege tower, and a movable bridge. They were ready for an all-out war. With them attacking, the goblins first put up wooden walls to defend themselves from archers.

"Now!" Rolan shouted. The archers then fired at them and they all went to the cover of the wooden wall they just installed.

The goblins were very tricky. They already know tactics skills. Rolan thought that there was a goblin general in their ranks.

The goblins made a shield wall and a battering ram was pushed. The movable bridge was being pushed by the gobins and Rolan instructed the archers to focus on the ones that were pushing the movable bridge.

Rolan knew that he was just delaying their assault but they could whittle down their numbers slowly but surely. He saw that the goblins also had a trebuchet on the backs of the hobgoblins installed. They fire burning oil pots on the walls.

"Shit, so much for a hard difficulty. I think I bite too much more than I can chew." Rolan clicked his tongue and then analyzed the situation.

Their archer couldn't fire at the hobgoblins knowing that the distance was out of reach. They also lacked countermeasures for the trebuchet of the enemies. Even a single trebuchet was not available in the options to build just lately due to a lack of materials. Or giant crossbows would do the trick and would pierce the Hobgoblin in one shot. There was also the time when it would need several days to build knowing they had to build walls as a priority.

The enemies soon installed the bridge they built and then the battering ram was now on its way. They also had wooden roofs on the battering rams and so, they were safe from archers.

"Quick lime!" Rolan shouted.

But not for long, they poured quicklime on the battering ram and lit it up. Making the goblins who were pushing them forcefully abandon it.

The siege was about to get to a standstill but the general of the goblins blew a horn. Beats of drums then were heard and their enemies realized to change tactics. Their movements immediately tell that they know what to do next.

"They already practiced this far?" Rolan was impressed. He did not want to admit it but they were good. Though as bitter as it was, he must applaud the enemy's level of army

The goblins then put ladders on the walls and the siege tower was near the walls. The army immediately loses another point on morale and Rolan bit his lower lips. The army was in dire straits and he lacked leadership skills to raise the morale.

And so, he devised a plan.

"Infantry! Block the path of the ladders and push the ladders away!" Rolan instructed.

They saw the goblins were climbing and so, they pushed the ladders to let them fall. Making the soldiers see them fall and the enemies scattered.

[Enemies are disoriented] +1 morale

The army roared upon a small victory. But the cheers don't last long. The siege tower opened its bridge and perched on the wall. With a sounding thud, they saw numerous hobgoblins all armed with shields and clubs. They were all attacked with arrows but only got stuck on the shields.

They saw the one leading them first charged into them. And with the leader charging first, they soon followed the charge at the defense of the infantry.

"The General?" Rolan couldn't be mistaken. It was fully armored compared to its underlings. He immediately ran towards the siege tower on the rampart of the walls.

The general goblin smashed the formation of infantry and their shields were splattered like a bursting shower of shields. Splitters of hardwood were made as a result of their charge.

It was enough to scatter and destroy their formation. And so, Rolan went to stop the general. Their morale would be at stake!

Rolan was fast to act and he leaped towards the general. It was looking back from him and so, he acted fast. Stabbing the gap of its armor on the back they went in disarray.

"The general has fallen!" Rolan shouted loudly and clearly. Immediately, the hobgoblins attacked and they threw rocks at the archers, assaulting the archers with projectiles that were enough to knock them out.

They returned fire and the battle of range units commenced.

It was then, they made another battering ram to push towards the bridge.

"Drop the rocks!" Rolan shouted. His men immediately dropped the rocks and the bridge was destroyed. The army then yelled for a small accomplishment.

The enemies soon made another bridge that they pushed after the rampart they made was broken by rocks. But this time, it was the hobgoblins. They made another wave of attacks and the hobgoblins were fast. Faster than their small ones.

They pushed to the gate and the battering ram soon was charging the gate. Hammering the wooden gate until cracks were made.

"Men! Form in the gate!" Rolan commanded.

They immediately responded to his call and made a phalanx formation. Still, the attack from the siege tower was flooding enemies. Making it a two-way defense from the enemies.

The battle still commenced and the gate was destroyed. The melee battle begins!

They made a phalanx formation on the bottom and then the archers attacked on the entrance. Goblins flooded the gate as they entered. Rolan then saw a Hobgoblin that had the biggest build than the rest. It roared at them as he charged toward the formation.

"A Hobgoblin champion!" Rolan immediately ran towards the enemy and he drew his sword. Battling the Hobgoblin champion.

The hobgoblins were brutes and they charged at them and they managed to break the formations.

They hacked and battered the enemies as the grueling clash of the army and the goblins lasted for half a day. Many died and hope was almost lost.

It was then, that the elder blew the horn.

Trottttttttttt!!!

The sound of the horn alarmed the goblins and deafening roars of humans sounded. Militias arrived and they attacked the remaining goblins.

It was a grueling fight for the militias as they were weaker than soldiers. Though they persevered till the end.

They survived the attack though most were injured. Making the survivors less than half of them since the beginning.

[Building Healing tent available]

"Build it."

[Healing tent constructed] +1 faster healing of wounded soldiers. Lesser chance of death occurrence to the wounded.

They build healing tents to reduce the injury and a chance of saving critical states of injured persons. Making it a priority for the moment.
