Chapter 5: A Weird Animal
The boat gently floated across the water, going towards the nearest island and honestly, it was pretty boring. I could feel myself falling asleep just from sheer boredom, I mean I knew this would take awhile but I thought we would be faster. During that time, the Red Bandana Pirates calmed down a little and weren't as scared of me. Of course that didn't mean their fear went away immediately, in fact, I could tell they were still scared of me regardless of what I told them.
It surprised me that these guys were pirates at all, you'd think they would've stayed home and do anything else. I mean I didn't know that much about pirates, only the basics but I knew pirates killed people all the time. So it amazed me to see them so uncomfortable around the idea of their comrades or captain dying. That could be me though, I've seen plenty of terrified people back in Soul Society. It could just be that my presence alone made them afraid, like prey running away from a massive predator.
Guess that was pretty accurate to what I was, a beast that was once chained to the Soul Society now no longer. Well enough of that, as more time passed while I was deep in my thoughts I eventually fell asleep sitting down on their former captain's chair. If they attacked me while I was sleeping, I wouldn't be surprised, most people who weren't battle maniacs would do so, or if they were significantly stronger than me as well.
I could guess, however, that these people wouldn't have the guts to do so at least not without my guard being down quite a bit more. While I was positive I could defend myself even in my sleep, I didn't know if these people had weird powers like those two captains who could take advantage of my current state. So I kept my guard up and got some rest in the process.
How much time passed as I slumbered, I had no idea but I did know what woke me up. The boat started shaking violently and I could feel something falling on my face opening my eyes I saw that it was snowing. That shouldn't have been possible, because based on the last island's weather it should've been either summer or maybe fall but not anywhere near winter.
The weird weather wasn't causing the boat to shake violently however, no that came from underneath the sea. I could see the Red Bandana pirates all running around scared while a few tried to take control of the situation. Getting up I let out a loud yawn and walked around, going towards the edge.
One of the guys near me, a big muscular guy with a full black beard and a bald head, wearing what looked like a cook uniform looked over the edge to try and see what was going on as well. Then a gigantic dark green tentacle roared out of the water and grabbed him. Before the thing could drag the guy down I drew my blade out and mustering using quite a bit of strength for good measure I did a basic side slash. Aiming for a bit below where the guy was currently kicking and screaming.
I was able to cut through the tentacle, and in the process, I grabbed the possible chief and the body part I cut off. I mean he could probably make use of it and make some good food later. It would be nice to try this new world's food as well, although it wouldn't be very hard to top the stuff I used to eat.
Landing back on the ship, I could feel teh ship shake far more violently than before as more tentacles rose out of the ocean. Then a bit further away from teh ship, I could see its main body rising out of the water. It had a squid-like head, but even I knew squids didn't have twelve tentacles so this creature probably just resembled one but wasn't of the same species.
However, that didn't matter, because once I was done with it it wouldn't even resemble a normal squid. I could feel a smile slowly crawling across my face, as I got excited after maybe this thing could give me a good fight. The thing roared out and it launched a series of strikes toward the ship, probably trying to figure out who cut one of its tentacles.
The closest one neared the ship but before it could break it apart, I launched myself at it and blocked its strike. Surprisingly enough the thing's durability wasn't that good but its strength was impressive even for its size. I was pushed back onto the ship's deck alongside the tentacle I was able to stop. Looking around I saw the other ones closing in fast. Looking at the one in front of me, I sidestepped and slashed down vertically slicing a large portion of it.
Then I jumped onto it and used it as a platform to push it back and jump towards the next one. Doing two slashes, the first one being a side slash and the next one being an upward slash slicing it into two pieces. Then I repeated the process going towards the next one, but it seemed like the creature wised up and sent another one in my direction. Smiling, I let one of them hit me and grabbed hold of it digging my blade into its skin.
It then sent me hurdling towards the tentacle I was going for earlier, hoping to crush me between the two. I was hoping it would do that as I ripped my blade out of teh tentacle aiming right towards the other getting a downward slash ready. As I was slammed into it, I struck down slicing it in half and as I was pushed into it, I kept on slicing my way through it.
It realized a bit too late, and once it stopped, I had cut pretty deep into it already and it lifted the tentacle I was holding onto above the other. Probably to see if I was still holding onto it, which I was. Looking up at me it roared out, sending the remaining tentacles in my direction probably hoping to crush me with overwhelming strength. Seeing this I simply smiled and shouted out to the open sea to the thing in front of me and the Red Bandana Pirates running around trying to keep course.
"Good idea, overwhelming strength is the way to go so go on try and kill me!"
