Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Loyal Servant

Hillary Henderson sneaked out of the party to look for August. Her grandfather was looking for him, so she volunteered to look for August for him.

It wasn't like August to just disappear in the middle of his job. She thought he had just gone for a short bathroom break, but she couldn't find him anywhere inside the venue.

She asked all the staff if they had seen him, but everyone had no clue where he was. While looking for August, Hillary stumbled at the private garden and heard his entire conversation with her cousin Reeve and Gwyneth Tinsley.

Hillary held it to her surprise when she found out that August had a secret relationship with Gwyneth. She did not expect August to have a girlfriend. August had always been busy with his job, and she didn't see him as a man who had time to date.

She is stunned to hear that he was secretly dating Gwyneth Tinsley, who happened to be her cousin's fiance.

Knowing her cousin, she knew that Reeve had done this on purpose. Reeve had always hated August for some reason. Even now that they are adults, Reeve is still the same childish person that he was. He never grew up.

"Do you see it now?" Reeve provoked August. "It doesn't matter if you are born with talent. You will never be able to escape the world that you are born in."

Reeve's insults shot through August's chest. Even Hillary, who was just listening to them, got offended by Reeve's insulting words.

When Hillary saw August's hands tightening into fists, she stepped in before August could do something that he might regret.

"There you are!" Hillary called out loud as she sauntered towards them.

Reeve's gaze turned to his cousin while August remained in his position, his fists clenched and unmoving.

"August, Grandpa is looking for you," Hillary tells August casually before turning her gaze to Reeve. "What are you doing out here, brother?" Hillary asks him like she knows nothing.

Reeve straightened himself and broke his eye contact with August as he looked at Hillary. "I was just talking to August about business," he lied.

"You must go back in there before Grandpa starts to look for you," Hillary brushes him off.

Reeve shifts his jaw. Seeing that he is already done here, he turns to leave before giving August one last glare.

When Reeve finally walked away, Hillary turned her attention to August. "Are you alright, August?" she asks her with concern.

August exhaled slowly to calm himself. If Hillary did not come to interrupt them, he would have punched Reeve in the face. The Hendersons would surely hate him more than they already do if they saw a bruise on the eldest Henderson's grandson.

"I'm fine," August replied in a small voice. He tried his best to appear fine, but his blood was still boiling in anger.

If only Hendrik Henderson had not been Reeve's grandfather, he wouldn't have hesitated to punch him. The only reason why August is holding himself back against the Henderson family is because he owes Hendrik Henderson so much.

If it wasn't for him, he wouldn't kept his silence and allowed all of them to insult him and step on his dignity. He only kept it all in because he owed Hendrik Henderson his life.

"Don't let Reeve's words get in your head. He had always been a jerk; he never grew up," Hillary tells August in distaste, hoping that it would at least comfort August a bit.

August did not say a word. Everything still weighed heavily inside his heart. Gwyneth has been his girlfriend since high school. He was already thinking about marrying her and committing her life to her.

He couldn't believe that they had broken off just like that. How could Gwyneth forget about their years of relationship after all the things that they had gone through together?

Hillary felt terrible for August. Her hand raised instinctively, wanting to give him a comforting pat on his shoulder, but she stopped herself when she noticed what she was just about to do.

Hillary and August could be someone that you can consider as childhood best friends, but they weren't that close.

Although they used to be friends when they were little, the two grew apart from each other as they took different paths in life.

While August had to study in a prestigious school, Hillary had to travel around the world as the world's youngest great violinist.

Now that they are adults, they treat each other more like acquaintances.

Aside from the chairman, only Hillary treats August with respect.

"Thank you for your concern," August lowered his head to Hillary and pushed back all his personal feelings.

August had always looked at Hillary Henderson as a person that he couldn't reach.

Hillary is the golden child of the Henderson family. She is the chairman's favorite grandchild, and because of that, all their family members love her and cherish her favor.

Not only is she the wealthiest man alive's favorite grandchild, but she is very talented and the prettiest woman in Tuxmont Hill. Due to her reputation, all other rich bachelors want to marry her.

August Hayes is just out of her level.

Hillary gulped at August's formality. He had always treated everyone in her family with such a level of professionalism, and because of that, she naturally became hesitant to treat him so casually.

Hillary watched as August left the garden as if nothing happened. His shoulders were straight, and he held a straight face as she walked back into the venue to continue his job.

Hillary felt bad for him, knowing that deep inside, he was hurting.

The party went on, but August refused to let what happened to drag him down. He busied himself with work, the thing that he does best.

Sometimes, he would catch his eyes turning to where Gwyneth was. Even though Gwyneth betrayed him, it is still hard to forget the good memories that they had.

She was once a woman that he cherished.

As the star of the night, all the guests followed Chairman Hendrik Henderson around, waiting for the rare chance to talk with him.

All eyes were on him as the wealthiest man inside the room. Even when he was about to leave, the people still followed him, hoping that they could have a chance to speak with him.

Hendrik Henderson is already old, and he is not as strong as he used to be before. Because of this, he has become more conscious of his health; he doesn't work overtime anymore, just like he did during his younger years.

Now that he has grown old, he learned to delegate some of his tasks as a chairman to his eldest son, Reeve's father, and also to Reeve as his eldest grandson and heir to their conglomerate company.

As Chairman Henderson walks out of the venue to leave, a car drives by just in time to pick up Chairman Henderson so he won't have to wait outside.

Cameras flashed everywhere as soon as Chairman Henderson came out of the venue. The lights were blinding, with a number of media personnel trying their best to have the best scoop in the event.

August raised his arms sideward to protect Chairman Henderson from the other people trying to reach him like he was his personal bodyguard.

The chairman's family members also followed him outside to respectfully bid him goodbye and make sure that he left the venue well.

Reeve and Gwyneth were there with arms wrapped around each other like they were born with their skin glued together. They haven't separated from each other the whole evening.

As the chairman is about to reach his car, August falls behind to block the rest of the crowd with the rest of the security while Calvin, Hendrik's personal assistant, opens the car door for him to help him. However, Hendrik just stood there and did not enter.

"Where is August? August!!!" Chairman Henderson yelled over the noise.

"Sir!" August yelled back and raised his hand so that the Chairman would see him.

He walked right through the tight crowd to reach him.

"There you are, drive the car for me, will you!" Hendrik shouted over the noise so that August could hear him.

However, he shouted so loud enough that all the people around him heard him.

Reeve snickered from behind August when he heard what his father had just done there. Gwyneth did not say a word. She only realized what August truly was in Hendrik's eyes.

August felt embarrassed. He turned silent as the blood drained his face.

With a smug look on his face, Calvin hands the car keys to August. August gulped as he looked down at the car keys in the palm of his hand. He just realized how right they were all about him.

Indeed, he is nothing but a slave handpicked by Hendrik, so he can serve him with complete loyalty. He is truly comparable to an adopted dog.
