Chapter 20: You Are being Tracked

Caesar gave her a thoughtful look and relaxed back to hear her out.

"Caesar, my father was murdered brutally in prison after taking the blame for a crime he didn't even commit." Adeline drew a cynical breath, gaze distant.

"Mr. Petrov had promised him he would see to the complete treatment of my mother's illness, but he didn't keep to his words. He didn't let her die peacefully either, he killed her like...she was nothing." Her voice cracked, eyes watering up a bit. "To him, her life...meant nothing. It was worthless."

"He gets rid of people the second they are of no use to him."

She chuckled dryly, lowering her head to dab off the tiny bubbles of tears. "Going easy on them is not an option. Dying is also not an option, at least not now. I have to make them pay..."

"…They will beg, break down mentally and emotionally. They will be hurt in every way possible."

"That is what I want." Her lips curled into a dry half-smile—one that Caesar would call heartless. "The USB will be the final weapon. We'll be able to use it to finish them off completely."

"I see." Caesar contemplatively stared at her and sighed softly.

"Do you have this USB with you?" he asked.

Adeline shook her head, replying, "No. I would never carry such a thing with me. But you will see it when we near-"

"Get down!" Caesar shouted abruptly, his darkened pupils moving from left to right with vigilance.

He promptly grabbed both of the revolvers in his pocket, hastily firing two shots from both left and right without warning.

The bullets burst through the glasses, penetrating the foreheads of two masked men who stood on either side of the restaurant windows.

One of them had held a phone up as if making a video recording, and the other had his phone close to his ear, ready to make a phone call.

With a huge thud, they dropped to the concrete ground, devoid of life.

Adeline, who had let out a startled yelp and lowered her head with her shaking hands covering her ears, breathed rapidly and unsteadily in fear.

She slowly lifted her head and glanced at Caesar, shocked and perplexed.

His face was crumpled in anger, and his eyes were crueler than she last remembered.

What happened? Why did he suddenly shoot? Who did he kill?

"Hand over your phone," Caesar said, shoving the revolvers back into the holsters his coat concealed. He stood up and extended his hand out. "Give it."

Adeline stared at him in confusion and got up to her feet. She grabbed her phone from her purse and handed it over to him. "What is going on? Who did you kill?"

"Did you have no idea you were being followed?" Caesar questioned, swiping through the phone.

Followed? Adeline's brows furrowed. "W-what are you talking about? I came here alone."

Caesar turned the phone, showing the screen to her.

"You are being tracked," he said, annoyed. "Those two men that I just killed are one of the Petrovs men."

Adeline lowered her head to look at the screen of her phone. Her lashes flickered, and she pinched between her brows in embarrassment.

How could she have been so stupid and missed it?

She should have known they would track her phone as well!

'I'm sorry." She lifted her head, but Caesar was already heading for the exit.

"Where are you going?"

"To see the body and confirm. If my aim wasn't perfect, I'd like to finish them off properly." Caesar glanced at her and cocked the revolver. "You'll be done for if that old man finds out you met up with me. Your plan will be ruined before you even begin, and you will never be able to achieve anything."

"I'm really sorry," Adeline apologized as she hurried after him toward the door.

Peering over his shoulders at her shorter figure, Caesar muttered with a pissed look, "Be a bit more careful, will ya? You might die at this rate before you even deliver a hit."

Adeline blinked awkwardly and followed behind him towards the left side of the building, where the dead man lay on the ground in his own pool of blood.

Caesar squatted down and extended out two fingers to touch the man's pulse. "He's dead," he confirmed, reaching for the phone in the dead man's grip.

"He took a video of you and me." His eyes scanned through the phone, which he'd unlocked with the use of the man's thumb. "It looks like he was about to answer a call before I shot him. Who the fuck is Mikhail?"

Adeline's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly snatched the phone from him. "That's his right hand man and Dimitri's bodyguard. He does all their dirty works for them."

"Oh?" Caesar grinned and stood up to his feet. "Shall we get rid-"

"Sir!" Nikolai came running, concerned, with fear written all over his face.

Caesar turned his attention to him. "What is it?"

"Are you okay?" Nikolai asked. He began to circle him, scanning every inch of him for possible injuries or something. "We heard gunshots and found a body out there."

"Oh, I killed him," Caesar said, appearing excited as if lives weren't taken. "This one is included." He pointed to the dead body, clad in all black, on the floor.

Nikolai glimpsed the body and quickly bowed his head apologetically. "Forgive me, sir. I was incompetent and failed to-"

"Whatever," Caesar dismissed and began to walk away. "Get rid of those bodies. They are Petrov's men, so deal with it and leave no trace."

"Yes, sir!" Nikolai nodded.

Sokolov, who had arrived as well, let out a relieved breath at the sight of Adeline, who was unscathed.

Adeline smiled at him. "Don't worry, I'm fine."

"I had no idea that the old man was tracking my location." She cackled a bit with a grimace and threw her head back to gaze at the dark sky.

Sokolov asked, "Do we return?"

"Of course not." Adeline clicked her tongue with a frown apparent on her face. "He will send a few more men since these two are dead, so why return so soon? I think I'll go have a little bit of fun instead."

She walked off and proceeded towards Caesar, who was waiting right outside the restaurant.

A smile emerged on her face and she lifted her head to look into his eyes.

"What?" Caesar easily towered above her, his brow raised.
