Chapter 34: No! Not Wine

Adeline sat across from Dimitri in the fine diner with her legs crossed and arms folded.

Surprisingly, Dimitri had agreed to the little date and even took the time to bring her to a refined, excellent restaurant. Their meals were mouth-watering, and the cozy atmosphere made everything even better.

"I never knew you were the romantic type." Adeline gave a small laugh, her hair in a neat ponytail, dangling. She was fitted in an ash-colored suit, an inner black turtleneck, and heels.

Dimitri's gray eyes rose to look at her. With a scoff, he said, "You know nothing about me."

"I definitely agree with that." Adeline grabbed the glass of wine, her plump red lips stretching into a wide smile. "Another benefit this date brings us. If we hadn't come, I never would have known you were this romantic."

"You do this for those women you get with, don't you?" She slouched the glass, swirling the wine inside of it.

Dimitri lifted a brow at her. "What are you getting at?"

"Nothing." Adeline shrugged, rolling her eyes. "I just feel a little jealous, I guess. You've never once taken me on a romantic date. Sucks, don't you think?"

"If you were my type, maybe I would have," Dimitri answered, scooping a spoonful of his meal.

Adeline stopped what she was doing and fixed her gaze on him. She smiled softly and sighed. "Are you saying you hate my personality? Or is it that I'm not beautiful enough for you."

"Beautiful maybe. Personality, sucks." Dimitri didn't hesitate with his response. "I hate women like you who act on their own so often. You are married to me, so you should be whatever I want you to be.. That way, you would be appealing to me." He expressed with his hands, the tone of his voice hinting at his displeasure.

Adeline's stomach twisted, but she did well to mask her disgust with a soft smile.

"It's okay, Dimitri. Y-you don't have to be so mad. I am working towards that. T-that's why-"

Her voice broke in between her words, causing Dimitri to look up.

At the sight of her saddened face, he frowned, this being the first time he'd ever seen her appear so vulnerable, not at all giving off the strong aura she often had.

Was this still the Adeline he knew? What the hell even happened to her? He was suspecting her, but he just couldn't seem to overlook the sincerity in her actions and eyes.

Was this some sort of twisted dream?

Dimitri narrowed his gaze. He hadn't had nearly as much to drink as Adeline, but something told Adeline that he wasn't a heavyweight when it came to drinking. Still, getting him drunk and forcing information out of him was sort of out of the question.

She would end up being the drunk one, as she had never been able to hold her liquor well.

"I'll be better, Dimitri, I will. You just have to give me another chance to fix things between us." Adeline sniffled, touching her chest to calm herself down.

Dimitri relaxed back in his seat, his arms crossed. "Is that so?" His lips were curling up into a grin. "Then, I guess since you are on the journey of becoming a better wife, you wouldn't mind me doing this," he said, picking up the glass of wine on the table.

Adeline watched as he tipped it, pouring the wine directly into her hair. Her eyes flickered, and she swallowed, barely holding herself back from reacting. She was in complete shock, that being the last thing she'd expected him to do.

Who the hell pours wine on their wife during a dinner date?

She chuckled inwardly, taking a deep breath to bury the anger that had boiled within her. Of course, she knew he was seeking to garner a reaction from her because he was obviously suspecting her, but she wasn't going to let it happen.

She had to keep up the act, even if it meant tolerating humiliating moments like this.

"Oops, my bad. My hand slipped." Dimitri laughed and relaxed back in his seat, unremorseful for what he'd done. He was waiting for it—the moment she would snap at him or pick up the glass, returning the same favor.

But what came next caused him to broaden his eyes.

Adeline had begun sobbing, streaks of hot tears running down her face and falling onto the table. It wasn't just a soft cry, but it was a heavy one.

No reaction was able to come from Dimitri, as he was utterly still on his spot, his eyes blinking in disbelief.

Adeline…crying? Huh? What kind of scenario was this? He wasn't even able to see her cry at her mother's funeral...

She was tough, and it was another thing he detested about her. Adeline was unbreakable—someone he'd never been able to shatter to his liking, no matter how hard he tried. She was someone who even frustrated his father to the point where he wrecked his whole office in a rage.

How possible was it that the same woman was sitting right in front of him, sobbing so much only because he poured wine on her head? Where had that tough side of her gone? What the fuck was even going on?

He was beyond perplexed. "Adeli-"

Adeline scooted the chair back and stood up. "I'll be back. I need…I need to clean myself."

His eyes fluttered in confusion as he watched her leave, completely at a loss for words.

Adeline left the room to make her way to the bathroom, but she accidentally bumped into a large figure, which caused her to stagger back on her feet. She was nearly about to fall, but the figure was quick to grab her wrist, pulling her back up.

"Can you please watch where you are go…ing?" Her trailing words slowly vanished at the sight of Caesar, who stood in front of her, a flabbergasted look on his face.

"Doll?" Caesar's tone was cheery, a soft, attractive chuckle rumbling in his throat.

Adeline batted her lashes, startled. "Y-you. What are you doing here?" She never expected to see him there.

What a hell of a coincidence!

"I'd ask you the same. Missing me already?" Caesar smirked, hunching over and lowering his body to be at the same height as her. His nose twitched aggressively, his face wrinkling into a frown. "Why do you smell like that?"

He suddenly sounded provoked.

"L-like what?" Adeline was staring into his eyes, her damped lashes blinking nervously. "Is it wine? Ah…I can explain. Well, somethin-"

"No, not wine!" Caesar shook his head at her, his gaze darkening. "You smell like someone! Who are you with?" He snatched her arm, pulling her closer.
