Chapter 5: The process of gaining the ability to learn magic
Once the two groups were complete the mage made an announcement.
"Those of you with the ability to become mages follow me.My name is Derek by the way.As for those of you who can't you will continue your regular training under Fred."
With that Derek led the group of wannabe mages to another part of the village.The building they were led to was closed off.Once they entered Derek made an announcement.
"Everyone with the exception of Raphael shall bathe in their own individual specialised vat of purifying water.You will each pick your own individual stall.The water in these vats possess special properties.They essentially alter your DNA slightly so you can use magic better.Bathing in it will clean and purify your skin and pores of any impurities so your mana can be released from your body.You will have to bathe yourself completely within the water face,head and all.In addition I will be informing your families that you will only be drinking this purifying water for the rest of your lives.Drinking this water will aid in the development of mana channels within your body and also clean them vigorously of any impurities.I have to warn you though doing both actions will make you extremely uncomfortable.If you do both these actions when your body is drained of mana then it will also help your body develop more mana capacity when your body gets all its mana back.Now pick your stalls.I'll let you know when you've had enough." Derek informed everyone of the buildings purpose but also triggered some alarm bells within Rens mind.
"Hey why doesn't Raphael have to bathe in this purifying water.?" someone made themselves heard among the group causing Derek to turn around when he was about to head off with Raphael.
"Well since Raphael was born with strong mana he doesn't need to go through these primary steps.His body already has well developed mana channels and even if his skin and body possess a lot of impurities he can just use his mana to brute force its way out of his body.If he keeps doing that then his body will become purified regardless.He simply has a better starting point then the rest of you.I can start his mage training right away.Don't worry though you can still relate to him in the fact that he still has to drink the purifying water when his mana is drained as a form of mage training." Derek answered the question in a matter of fact way.
Ren and Ruth who was also a mid tier in terms of physical strengh found something in common with the rest of their group.They genuinely couldn't relate to Raphael in any way whatsoever.He was just so proper and perfect that he just felt like a genuine alien sometimes.
Ren simply decided to go ahead and get this training over and done with so that he could catch up to Raphael in mage matters.Ren found an appropriate stall and closed the curtain behind him.
What he laid eyes on was a large water tight wooden vat.Inside the wooden vat was a liquid that resembled water but Ren could feel a sort of energy from it.
Ren didn't know how it worked but it seemed as if the moment he had his mana drained and measured he had a sort of sixth sense opened up.
It allowed him to sense the energy within the mage called Derek as well as all the other children.He remembered that the other group that went with Fred were empty of this energy.He could also feel the nature of this energy and the energy within the children was pure and untainted.
The mana within Derek felt as if it had multiple properties and elements within it but Ren couldn't figure out what they were.Needless to say the energy within the water was also different but Ren didn't know in which way.
"Is this mana I'm sensing?I'll have to ask Derek about this later." Ren then dipped his big toe into the purifying water.
It immediately felt as though Ren had dipped his big toe in strong acid which caused him to bring his big toe back.Ren immediately checked to see if his big toe was still there.Thankfully his big toe remained.
"Do they seriously expect me bathe myself in something that feels like acid.Not to mention I have to drink this stuff.What the hell man."
The sound of people dipping into purifying water became audible throughout the building.There were even a couple of yelps and small number of swears.Clearly everyone else was doing it so why couldn't he do it.Ren was used to a bit of pain from being beat up by Raphael all these years.
"This world's magic better be worth it." Ren gritted through his teeth as he climbed into the wooden vat.He then proceeded to have the most uncomfortable bathing experience of his two lives.
