Chapter 21: Why Do You Like Her So Much?

"Please come in, the door is open."

Hardly had the words left her mouth when the door swung open and in walked or rather marched what Grace would best describe as a red haired devil judging from the look on her face.

The lady walked over to Grace, each step echoing on the tiled floor and stared at Grace condescendingly.

Grace returned the look with an equally undaunting gaze, matching her mocking gaze with confidence.

"Who are you and may I know what I can do for you?"

"The lady's lips curled in disgust as she took in the sight of Grace in the wheelchair.

"What possibly can a cripple do for me?" the lady sneered, her words dripping with sarcasm.

'I thought I was actually up against something, I didn't know that useless maid had to call me over a mere cripple who can't even "stand up" to me,' Cory Beaumont couldn't help but sneer inwardly.

If she had know it was someone this pathetic, she wouldn't have wasted her entire night plotting on how to deal with her supposed rival and losing her beauty sleep this early to come here. What a waste of time and energy. 'I'm definitely going to teach that little bitch a lesson after I'm through with this cripple.'

"I don't know who you think you are, but I also know you don't know who I am, so I'd advice you mind your language and show some curtesy when talking to people,"

Grace's voice broke in on Cory's thoughts.

"Who are the "people" we are talking about here? You?" Cory gestured mockingly at Grace.

Grace forced herself to swallow down her rage, just like the pill a while ago.

The only difference was that the pill had a good purpose but she was sure this particular human pill was going to be terrible all the way down.

"What do you want from me?" She composed herself to ask.

Cory circled around Grace's wheelchair, in the process looking down at her head that was still wrapped in a towel. "I want you to wheel your miserable self and disappear from this place, forever."

"Really? And who are you to ask me to do that?" Grace retorted, totally unruffled by the woman's attitude. She was not the least perturbed by the woman who by all standards looked intimidating since she was towering over Grace who was in a wheelchair.

"Cory Beaumont! What the heck are you doing on my property?" A cold voice answered from the doorway.

Grace's head jerked to the door but her sharp eyes didn't fail to notice the frozen expression on her assailant's face when Jace Brandon's voice sounded from the doorway.

But almost immediately, there was a quick transition in the hateful look that was painted on Cory's face to a supposedly angelic one as she turned around to face the door.

"Darling cuz, it's so good to see you again," she said in the most irritating voice Grace has ever heard.

Jace had no reaction but just crossed his arms over his chest as if he was looking at a joke.

"You never told me you were hiring a nanny for our sweet Charles," Cory continued after getting over her embarrassment. "So I came to check her out."

Why was it so difficult to have a simple conversation with him? She had loved him all her life and what she got every time he saw her was his heartbreaking indifference.

"When have I ever needed your permission to take decisions in my family?" As for checking out his son's nanny, he knew better what her true intentions were. "Why are you here?"

One could tell instantly how unwelcome her presence was from Jace's tone.

"I told you already…"

"That you came to check on my son's nanny, but that is not allowed. And let this be the last time I'll see you in this part of the house. If you can't abide by that simple rule, don't ever show your face here again."

To say that Cory was embarrassed is an understatement as the next minute, she stuck her nose in the air and stormed out of Grace's room, banging the door loudly behind her.

Jace waited until Cory was gone before he asked, "how is your leg?"

"It's getting better, I tried using it this morning."

"You don't need to be so hard on yourself. Allow it to heal naturally."

Throwing a casual glance at Grace who seemed to have forgotten that a towel had been wrapped around her head all morning, he said, "meet me in the living room after you're properly dressed."

Jace didn't know why he was bothered about a mere nanny, but after thinking about it for a while, he could only attribute it to the fact that she had saved his son.

"Yes, Mr Brandon," Grace nodded, before realizing that he was referring to the towel on her head and blushed. She had totally forgotten about it.

At the living room, as soon as he heard his father's footsteps Charles looked up expectantly but his expression soon changed as he didn't see the person he was waiting for.

"She'll be down in a while," Jace shook his head and sat down on the couch.

"What's so special about her? Why do you like her so much?" He asked as he brought Charles to sit with him.

Charles quickly scribbled down something on his notepad. "She is nice."

Jace stared at Charles with interest. "How do you know?"

"Don't ask. I just know," he wrote down and his father's mouth curled up in a slight smile after reading it.

"Hmm, I guess it's because she has helped you several times."

Charles did not respond, rather, his eyes flew back to the doorway.

"Won't you at least chat with daddy? I promised to get her to be your nanny and I fulfilled my promise, at least I deserve some attention in appreciation for my hard work."

But all he got were three soft pats on his strong legs from his son whose eyes were still glued to the entrance.
