Chapter 2: The Investment System

[The Investment System: Become the richest or die trying.]

Clyde found himself blinking in an attempt to make these words disappear, yet the futility of his actions was proven by the harrowing text that stood before him.

'"It really is like one of those novels. To think I would see a system one day."

Clyde stood frozen, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. His newly gained memories from his predecessor were getting clearer as his brain adapted with the help of the system.

'Damn, what a terrible guy he was. It certainly clears any regrets I have about descending into his body.'

Sieving through the experiences of Clyde Nevis, the reaction of disgust prevailed over any others. Clyde Nevis was no better than a thug who flaunted his wealth as if asking to get face-slapped by cultivation protagonists.

The son of two successful businessmen, Clyde Nevis had been showered with affection in his youth. However, despite the parental love he received, he remained indifferent.

Growing up as an arrogant young master, Clyde Nevis never faced any roadblocks in his early life, having access to the best facilities and opportunities. When his parents died of mysterious causes shortly after he reached adulthood, instead of sadness, he received their inheritance with glee.

Now in possession of a sizeable fortune, Nevis found himself surrounded by bootlickers who syphoned off his wealth whilst stroking his ego. Burning through his inheritance on luxury items and supercars, he quickly found himself left with nothing.

Resolving himself to earn back his fortune, Nevis ran to Korea, where he built a horrible track record in the field of investment and business. Unlike the fairytale he had imagined, Nevis was in debt before his body was taken over.

"How could you possibly go into debt, you idiot! I know you were losing money, but why a 1 million dollar loan!"

For Clyde, this was the straw that broke the camel's back. Nevis had taken out a loan, but the reason as to why remained fuzzy no matter how hard he focused.

[Mission: Become the wealthiest person on the planet.

People have questioned your investment prowess. Become the richest to silence them.

Time limit: 10 years.

Reward: Survival

Failure: Death]

As if feeling frustrated by Clyde ignoring it, the system flashed an impossible mission in his face and disappeared.

'Richest in the world? 10 years? Death?'

Clyde felt his soul leave his body at the death sentence disguised as a mission that he had just received. Anyone watching him at this moment could see Clyde visibly shaking, this time not from shock but anger.

"WHAT TYPE OF SHITTY FIRST MISSION IS THIS! DEATH? WHERE ARE MY PUSHUPS AND SITUPS? YOU ARE SICK!"

The bottled-up anger Clyde had been suppressing erupted in an unstoppable wave of hatred. The fact that the system remained silent pushed Clyde over the edge.

"OH, SO THE SILENT TYPE? YOU'RE LUCKY YOU'RE NOT SENTIENT, OR I'D BEAT YOU UP."

Eventually, calming down to the point of regaining reason, Clyde could barely believe he had threatened an intangible object despite not having any combat experience.

Clyde slumped into a velvety chair as he began accepting his miserable fare, looking out the window with a lost gaze. Clyde looked at the Seoul skyline superimposed over the bustling streets where ant-sized people continued their daily lives.

"So this is how my first visit to Korea goes, reincarnated into the body of a thug with a system trying to kill me? Huuuu Amelia always wanted to go to-"

Clyde jumped out of his chair as if struck by a lightning bolt. The fictional events sprung upon him had caused Clyde to forget a crucial part of his life.

"My sister! What's happening to her?"

Images of her being taken away to an orphanage whilst crying were all that filled Clyde's head.

'I won't allow such a thing to happen when I'm still around. I'll call her and tell the truth. She will understand eventually.'

As Clyde was crafting an explanation as to why he ended up in the body of Clyde Nevis that would convince his sister, he saw the white text that could fuel nightmares pop up once more.

[Mission: Attend the first filming of Pixiu's Pit.

Clyde Nevis is a controversial foreign investor who was added to the show as a throwaway. Complete the first filming of the program.

Reward: Amelia Woods, Stats Upgrade.

Condition: No information regarding reincarnation or the system can be mentioned to her.]

"You can't call my sister a reward, you cursed system."

Clyde said this, yet he was already used to the dreadful system he now possessed. Despite being just a white font on a blue hologram, it still angered Clyde.

'I honestly expected it to keep us apart. Even with the condition, it's okay. Thank goodness the hell system didn't strike again.'

"More importantly, what's a stats upgrade? Don't tell me.."

Remembering the iconic word that resounded throughout anime and novels, Clyde couldn't help but call out.

"Status!"

He grinned as the blue screen appeared once more, displaying words he hadn't seen before. Thankful he didn't make a fool of himself, Clyde began reading.

[Status Window: Clyde Nevis

- Contacts: C-

- Persuasion: E+

- Charm: B-

- Knowledge: F

- Management: F+]

"Wow, this build is horrendous, but with the stat improvement option, it should improve over time."

Staring at his feeble stats, more information began to appear, detailing them to the extent that Clyde was finally able to understand what they did.

[Contacts: C-

Every good businessman has a thick phonebook. The ability to contact and receive a response from crucial figures in the industry presents massive advantages.

Clyde Nevis has strong connections with the Korean mob due to his thug-like lifestyle and reckless spending. Although not strictly business, they can utilise their influence in multiple sectors.]

'Connections to the Korean mob? Nevis was much deeper into the criminal rabbit hole than I thought. It's really a double-edged knife in disguise.'

Although Clyde was ecstatic to have a helpful stat at C rank, mob ties also carried the risk of exposure and punishment by the law.

[Persuassion: E+

The words of a good businessman are equivalent to those of a prophet. The combination of reputation and aura form the persuasion stat; high persuasion makes people more likely to side with you.

Only ignorant people will be persuaded by Clyde Nevis's reputation as a wealthy businessman. Those with knowledge within the industry know of his poor track record. Clyde Nevis's aura is that of a playboy thug, making people nervous as opposed to willing.]

'It appears my persuasion will only be useful for those who are ignorant; my losses can't be hidden from those with insider knowledge. Although it says E+, in reality, it's worse.'

Knowing he had no choice but to follow the system's goal, Clyde resolved one of his first moves would be to fix his horrible reputation within the industry.

[Charm: B-

Who wouldn't want to do business with a pretty face? Increases chances of successful negotiation, effect amplified on the opposite gender.

Clyde Nevis possesses a handsome face almost at the level of a model. His bad-boy charm can blind people into entering into business.]

'Blind people into business? This trashy system makes it sound like that's my only chance.'

Turning to the mirror with a golden outline in the corner of his room, his new handsome face was revealed once more, possessing a natural smirk he radiated charm. Clyde couldn't help but scoff and shake his head.

"Only B- for this masterpiece? What was I in my past life, F? Hmmm, Amelia probably reaches the A range based on the standards of models."

[Knowledge: F

Business knowledge and theory are the foundations of everything. Titans in the industry are able to consume numbers and predict the course of a company in the future.

Both Clydes possess pathetic levels of knowledge in the field of business. Clyde Nevis is a college dropout, and Clyde Woods was a below-par student.]

'F rank seriously, is it that bad? What did I spend two years in college for?'

Feeling embarrassed by the pathetic knowledge he possessed from the system's point of view, Clyde quickly brushed over it and moved on to the final stat.

[Managment: F+

The ability to preside over subordinates and effectively allocate tasks. Owning a company requires the ability to lead and rally your troops.

Despite lacking any knowledge of management, Clyde Nevis possesses the qualities of a natural-born leader, slightly raising the stat.]

"Well, there is a long way to go, but at least this presents the slightest glimpse of hope."

No longer distracted by rewards and stats, Clyde felt slightly better that only one mission stood in the way of seeing his sister again. He muttered under his breath as he read the details of the mission.

"Filming of Pixiu's Pit? Is that some TV show? I don't recall any memories related to acting; what's going on?"

Turning on the TV in search of news, as if the universe was laughing at him; his face was plastered across the screen. The news reports' words shot out like bullets, each one sending Clyde into a deeper depression.

"It is rumoured that rising director Son Jee's new show Pixiu's Pit is beginning filming today. An investment show based on America's Squid Tank will pit entrepreneurs seeking investment against titans in the Korean industry.

Weeks earlier, the first three Pixius were announced with an insane lineup. Hak Dong, the 68-year-old owner of a real estate empire worth $300 million, secured the first spot. Followed by Dam Iseul, the food industry mogul worth an estimated $100 million despite being only 37. Last but not least was Byun Nari, the 21-year-old rising star of the beauty and entertainment industries. Although young, Nari's net worth is predicted to be $50 million, making her the wealthiest woman under 30 in Korea.

Although we were informed by Director Son that there was a fourth Pixiu to be announced, we didn't expect the announcement to come this late. The final Pixiu is Clyde Nevis, a 20-year-old American investor who is a highly controversial figure in the industry. Why did Director Son choose such a man? Likely to increase foreign viewership and clips. Despite his volatile personality, Nevis is likely worth in the range of $20 million, making him the poorest Pixiu."

Whilst the news reporter was speaking, Clyde was having his third mental breakdown of the day following his reincarnation and acquisition of a system.

"I'm on an investment show? But I'm $1 million in debt. The people seeking investment will be richer than me! $20 million? More like 20 million won!"
