Chapter 3: A warm embrace
"Nothing! Just remembered something...um...something Kira told me about Leo." My tone was a bit shaky, but Jack had no reason to doubt my words.
"Leo? The blonde kid?"
I chuckled moving my fingers around his soft scalp. The tension was starting to fade away...a good sign.
"Yes."
"Didn't you have a crush on him last year?"
I gently peeled his head off of my chest to shield my pounding heart from his ear. He wasn't supposed to know that I never really had a crush on Leo. It had been a lie, just to make myself feel normal.
"Ha!Ha!" I gave an awkward laugh before jumping off the sofa and walked around it.
"That was a long time ago." I murmured. "Anyway, I need to go shower. See you-"
"Get me some vodka." Jack interrupted when he noticed my hurried pace towards the stairs.
I stopped and looked back at his amused face. Gawd! He looked so hot with his hair down. I'm going to hell for this!
"Su-sure."
The air inside the kitchen was much cooler and quiet. It helped me calm my stupid feelings.
After pouring some vodka in a glass, I opened the freezer and grabbed the icecube tray. A coy grin spread on my lips as I removed the heart-shaped ice cubes and dumping them in his drink. It brought back some memories; I had complained to Jack that the previous tray only made plain square cubes, so he surprised me the next day with a different tray.
"Psst!" A manly voice from somewhere close hit my right ear. I immediately startled, accidentally releasing the glass of vodka in my hand.
From behind, a hand came to its aid and caught it before it hit the counter. The action had Jack slam himself on me.
"I'm so sor-"
"You need to pay attention to things." He whispered as his left hand placed down the glass. Slowly, Jack turned me around to face him.
In such close proximity, I could feel his body heat radiating through his t-shirt and into mine.
His hands remained on my waist, his body literally against me, thigh to thigh, torso to torso.
Never before had we been this close, in this position.
"You've been acting weird lately!" He spoke, his eyes searching into mine for answers. "Talk to me."
Talk to you? Is this a joke? I huffed in my mind.
"I'm...I'm okay." I lied trying to break free. But he instead flattened his right palm on the small of my back and nudged me forward, pressing me even firmer against himself.
I caught the struggle in his blue eyes.
Caught as they slightly stared down at my lips.
"You're lying."
My breath was now caught up inside my lungs. My throat drier than a microwaved fish.
"Jack." I called. "We...you..."
His expression was fading to something else. I've never seen him look at me like that, ever. It somehow frightened me. But I was too lost in the heat of the moment to care.
I reached up, tucked a few strands of the long hair behind his ear then smiled. "I'm not distracted."
Jack reciprocated the act, but delayed the hand to almost cup my face.
"You sure?" He asked in a strained whisper.
I nodded. And to push aside his concerned inquiries, I threw my arms around him in a firm embrace.
But this one felt different. I was feeling all sorts of things; gratitude, attraction, nervousness, fear. What if he picked up on my teenage crush on none other than himself?
Jack's hands enveloped me till we both relaxed and feelings ceased running wild within me. They settled back to normal, which I celebrated with a relaxed sigh. He really had a superpower of making me calm down.
Out of the blues, Jack pulled back and kissed my forehead. "Go to bed."
And that was all, he released me, grabbed his drink behind me before walking out.
It took me a few minutes to comprehend all that had taken place. The way I had almost succumbed to my desires.
"Silly Annie." I slapped myself.
