Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Jessica had a boyfriend for three years, who was a year junior to her. They were the envy of their university: he was the president of the student council, and she was the head of the literary arts department. He led the business school to numerous accolades, while she shone brightly on stage with her department.

Back then, he would ride his motorcycle with her sitting behind, passing through the main roads sheltered by plane trees, drawing admiring glances from passersby: "That's Jessica and DANIEL... the power couple from the business school. The girl is super talented, got an offer from a multinational company, and is heading to Shanghai. She just held a seminar a few days ago, such a gentle and beautiful senior... And that boy, the president of the business school, has led them to several championships..."

She wrapped her arms around his slim waist, resting her face on his shoulder; he gripped the handlebars tightly, careful not to let the speed bumps disturb her. At that time, they were the campus highlight, the center of conversations, everyone believed they were meant to be together forever.

Jessica was DANIEL's first love, his sunshine, his goddess, his little girl, the girl he swore to marry.

She liked Jay Chou, so he went out to sell apples on Christmas Eve, ate instant noodles for three months to save up enough money, asked a friend for a favor, and managed to get tickets in the tenth row right in the center of the arena. In the cold northern winter nights, after walking her back to her dorm, he'd put on his hat, plug in his earphones, hands in his pockets, and listen to Jay Chou's albums one by one.

He bought a notebook and copied down the lyrics of the concert setlist, memorizing them day by day. He said, "I'm afraid I won't be able to sing along at the concert, and that would disappoint you."

Looking into his eyes, she saw twinkling stars. She had already planned their future: she would go to Shanghai first to gain some work experience. Once he finished his master's degree, they would settle down in the city where their university was located, close to both their families. Although it was a provincial capital with reasonable housing prices and decent opportunities, their familiar friends were there too. After spending a few years in a long-distance relationship, they could finally spend their lives together.

As graduation approached, she spent days crying, her eyes red. He saw her sadness and felt a deep sense of reluctance and pity.

One day, she pouted, feeling down, "Why hasn't the college held a graduation party in years? I really don't want to graduate without any fanfare..."

He took note and started visiting the college office daily, chatting with the secretary.

One day, he called her from beneath her dorm building, "Come down, I have something to tell you."

His voice tried to sound calm, but his pride was unmistakable.

She ran down, puzzled, "What's the rush?"

He smiled, embraced her, and gently touched her soft hair, "You have a graduation party now."

She covered her mouth, tears of joy falling unexpectedly.

She buried her head in his chest, hugging his waist tightly, letting her tears and snot wet his orange sweater, a gift from her.

She thought: In this lifetime, it's him.
