Chapter 34: Eye See (1)

"Mom, what's happening?" Miki responded in a scared voice. She had never heard her mom speak in such a tone, and it spooked her quite a bit.

Looking back at the kunai implanted into the ground where she had just been sitting, pieces clicked into place fairly quickly about the situation. This person had tried to kill her, and her mom was protecting her right now.

Miki's eyes firmed as she put together the pieces of the puzzle and stood behind her mom, letting the woman who had cared for and protected her all of her life do it once more.

"What is a Mist shinobi doing in the village of whirlpools, huh? And why are you after my daughter? Do you wish to die a horrible death just like the past Mist shinobi who have crossed me?"

"Die? To you? You've been out of the front lines for nearly ten years now. Do you honestly think that you could take on an Anbu from the Hidden Mist and survive? Let alone protect your daughter?"

Tomiko's aura became colder by the second, freezing a little of the nearby river as she looked at the Mist shinobi with a calmness about her that someone only got after years of life-threatening battles. That is something that not even time can change.

"I would gladly die if it meant that I would take you away from here and allow her to escape." The glacial stare she was giving him felt almost like an ice beam jutsu at this point.

Ryuugetsu chuckled at that. "You can die as many times as you want, but it won't prevent your daughter from being taken back to the Mist. And I think you can guess what will happen when that happens." The ninja flashed a smile that broke Tomiko's cool.

Ice Release: Certain-Kill Ice Spears!

Giant thirty-foot-tall ice spikes shot out of the ground at rapid speed, aiming to impale the intruder on Uzushiogakure ground.

"See what I mean? Out of practice," Ryuugetsu shot back as he flickered around the ice spikes and launched a Water Release: Water Senbon at Tomiko, coming out of the mass of ice as if nothing had happened.

Tomiko gritted her teeth and made hand seals to counter the water senbon coming towards her.

Ice Release: Crystalline Wall!

Knowing that the spy had a point about being out of practice but also not willing to ever let the Mist get their hands on her daughter, Tomiko called out, "Ice Release: Cryoblast!" A freezing ice wind flew out of her hands, aiming to entrap her victim in a coffin of ice but failing because of how nimble the spy was.

"The spy is way too fast and nimble for me to be fighting him in an open field like this. So I'll just have to box him in," Tomiko thought.

Flying through more hand seals, Tomiko landed on the ox seal as her Ice Release: Ice Box materialized out of thin air and entrapped the spy in a box with the front-facing wall missing, leaving the perfect opening for Tomiko to launch another jutsu at him.

"Ice Release: Ice Dragon" Tomiko finished her jutsu.

"I may be out of practice, but that doesn't mean I can't still kill you," Tomiko spat out as the ice dragon came flying at the Mist spy faster than he could get out of the box.

BOOM!

A large explosion of ice shards and earth happened as Tomiko stood in front of Miki, ready for the next attack. As the smoke and debris cleared, there was no one to be found, just a small puddle of water. But before anyone could take a breath of air, the Mist ninja rematerialized out of the puddle of water.

Tomiko stood guarded in front of Miki, waiting to see if the shinobi fled or kept going. Tomiko knew that as a spy and infiltrator, the mission you were usually sent for included quickness and silence, and the way he was currently fighting reflected that to a tee but the way she was fighting didn't suit his mission. She was just waiting to see if he decided to keep this up.

Miki stood behind, in awe of her mother's strength. Seeing the jutsu she created and the massive ice dragon that she summoned left Miki at a loss for words and the thought that no one in the world could bring her down.

Ryuugetsu growled in frustration; perhaps he had underestimated her. Employing Water Release: Hiding in the Mist Jutsu, Ryuugetsu disappeared into the thick fog that he produced. Tomiko closed her eyes, focusing.

"Ice Release: Frozen Sensory," Tomiko whispered. She used this jutsu to detect Ryuugetsu's movements, feeling the ice beneath both his and her feet vibrating with his every step.

Turning her head, Tomiko launched another attack, Ice Release: Piercing Spears, sending a dozen sharp icicles cutting through the mist towards Ryuugetsu. He dodged, barely avoiding the deadly projectiles.

The spy reappeared, a look of annoyance and urgency on his face, his hand signs blurring as he used Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Jutsu, summoning a roaring dragon of water, out of the river, that surged towards Tomiko. She met it with her own Ice Release: Dragon's Breath, a blast of freezing air that turned the water dragon into a sculpture of ice mid-assault, amazing Miki who was thirty feet back at this point.

The battle continued, neither willing to yield, until Ryuugetsu, with a deceitful trick, caught Tomiko lacking in her fundamentals.

'This needs to be fast because it's going to draw a lot of attention,' Ryuugetsu thought to himself.

Ryuugetsu threw down an explosive tag on the ground, causing a dustup and a loud explosion.

He then released another Water Release: Hiding in the Mist Jutsu, mixing it with poison as the mist came out of his mouth, creating a cloud of toxic vapor that enveloped Tomiko.

Not recognizing the poison, Tomiko used her Ice Release: Frozen Sensory jutsu again to sense where he was in the mist. What Tomiko found was weird; he hadn't entered the mist at all. Instead, he was staying a good distance away, almost as if he were an observer. Alarm bells went off in her head and then she began to cough blood and feel nauseous.

'Damnit, was there poison in the water jutsu? How is that even possible? Unless he had poison on hand and used the jutsu to spread it.'

As she fell to her knees, the mist disappeared again, and what Miki saw was the Mist ninja standing over her mother's body with a bloody kunai in hand as Tomiko fell with a sliced neck.

Tomiko fell to the ground, turning and giving Miki one last motherly smile. The blood coming out of her neck cooled quickly on the icy ground. Her last thoughts were of Miki, and a silent prayer for someone to show up and that her daughter would be safe from the clutches of the Mist village.

Watching her mother fall while fighting to protect her, Miki was incredulous. 'How could my mother die? This can't be happening; she was supposed to teach me all about Ice Release. I've never had a dad, but mom's always been there, so what about now?' Miki's eyes became lifeless and vacant as a feeling of dread came over her.

Miki's eyes didn't leave her mother's face. Even as Tomiko turned back around, laying on the ground, to give her daughter one last smile before she departed from the earth.

That smile is what made something inside Miki break. Tears came flooding from her eyes as she watched the color drain from her mother's face and the light leave her eyes.

Something primal in Miki had awakened at that moment, a hatred so vile that you could feel it in the air and an aura so cold that it froze everything around her, except a 2 foot circle surrounding her mothers body.

A scream equal parts heartbroken and wrathful, ripped itself from Miki's throat as her chakra exploded from her small frame. A chakra that froze the tears coming out of her eyes, froze the grass that they were standing on, a chakra that froze the very atmosphere itself creating snowflakes out of nowhere. Her chakra essentially flash-froze everything in the nearby vicinity.

The Mist shinobi jumped back, watching ice and snow form on every surface and smiled to himself.

"So, all it took was her mother's death. The rumors were indeed true then; she does seem to be the most talented child in her clan."

Seeing that the outburst was done and Miki had frozen herself to the ground during her outburst, he dashed forward towards Miki with a kunai covered in sleep poison.

Just as he was about to slice her arm, he felt an overwhelming sense of dread come over him and then a sharp stabbing pain in his arms before darkness overtook him.

(A/N: First fight scene using jutsu, let me know if you think anything from wording to formatting should be changed. I enjoy listening to the feedback and improving, so go for it!)
