Chapter 4: CHAPTER 1-1 (PART 2/3): Classroom of the S-lite

POV: Kiyotaka

I must admit I'm not a fan of the entrance ceremony. It seems many freshmen share this sentiment. The endless speeches by the principal and the repetitive thanks from students, not to mention the time spent standing, all of it is frankly boring and often filled with rather awkward moments. But that's not all I have in mind.

Entrance ceremonies, whether in elementary, middle, or high school, mark the beginning of a significant challenge for students. The days following this ceremony are crucial for making friends, which is essential for fully enjoying school life. If one fails to make friends, it seems they're doomed to three miserable years.

Eager to avoid any problems, I think it's better to make friends and establish proper human relationships. The night before, I even practiced making friends, not having much experience in this area. My first attempt involved abruptly entering the class and starting a conversation with enthusiasm. The second, discreetly passing a note with my email address to make friends afterwards.

In my situation, this training was necessary, as this is a totally new environment for me. I feel completely isolated, like entering a battlefield alone.

But maybe things will go better than expected? After all, I've already met several people before even getting here... Maybe it won't be as difficult as I thought. And then, Uesugi is in my class; he could well become my first friend.

... ... ... ... ...

Now present in my classroom, I took my place where my name was inscribed on the nameplate, right at the top, near the window – probably the best spot in the room. So, I settled in without really paying attention to the others entering the class...

I was contemplating the landscape through the window, pondering. Wondering if I should try to approach someone to make friends. However, I didn't have time to delve further into this thought when a voice was heard, pulling me from my thoughts. I automatically turned to see who it was: Uesugi. Well, it seems we will indeed be in the same class, and even desk neighbors. This is a lucky turn, so it seems I won't have to make much effort to make friends, right?

Uesugi: Hey, hello Ayanokoji. We're desk neighbors, then?

Saying this, he quietly sat in the place right next to mine, continuing to look at me by turning his chair towards me. So, I responded to his gesture by doing the same.

Kiyotaka: Uesugi, right? It seems we're indeed going to be desk neighbors. Well, I hope we'll get along then.

Uesugi: He sketched a discreet smile. Yes, it's clear to me, you don't seem like the kind to cause problems or be foolish... What I mean is, you seem calm, and that's nice.

Kiyotaka: Looking at him briefly before responding. I understand. Let's just say I prefer to avoid problems as much as possible. I don't consider myself particularly foolish... but I don't believe myself to be extremely intelligent either.

This is quite surprising... I thought I was the boring type precisely because I'm like this... It seems I still have a lot to learn. Anyway, he seems as calm as me, which makes me think it wouldn't be unpleasant to spend time with someone as serene. I prefer to avoid complications, so being surrounded by people like him suits me...

Uesugi offers me another proud smile, crossing his arms.

Uesugi: You're rather modest, that's quite a change from the others. He sent me another smile then paused, thinking, before fixing his gaze on me, more determined. Listen, if you struggle with certain subjects, don't hesitate to ask me for help. I'm already tutoring five idiot girls, so adding one more person won't be a problem. And then, if a boy joins us, it'll make me feel a bit less like the odd one out in the group.

This is an interesting proposition indeed... Given that I consider myself an average student and we are in a school for the elite, settling for average will probably not be enough... Spending time with him studying could be beneficial. And he mentioned he was teaching five girls, didn't he? He must surely be talking about the five other girls I saw getting on the bus... Well, if I can also be surrounded by five charming girls, I won't complain.

Yes, this is a proposition to consider... This could be the opportunity to build stronger friendship bonds with him and get to know him better... Finally, making a first friend wasn't as complicated as I had imagined, it was even surprisingly simple. One could say I've had a good stroke of luck... Yes, coincidences can sometimes be really surprising, can't they?

Kiyotaka: I understand... Yes, that could prove useful. If I need, I'll know who to turn to. Given that we are in an elite school, the challenges will surely be greater, and simply reaching the average will probably not be enough, don't you think?

Uesugi: That's right, I'm glad you grasp the importance! Pursuing excellence rather than settling for the average is essential. It's nice to see there are still serious people in schools. But then, I suppose I shouldn't be so surprised to meet someone like you in an elite school, right?

Kiyotaka: You give me too much credit, there's nothing exceptional about me... It's just my way of being. I'm simply not very good at social interactions.

Uesugi: He displayed another smile. No need to put yourself down like that! Don't worry, if you're not exceptional, at least you're normal. Think that there are much worse than you, people who consistently fail!

I'm not sure if that's supposed to comfort me, but... maybe he's right. He said that as if he was thinking of someone specific... I wonder what he means by that. Regardless, I think he's right. There's nothing wrong with being average, not being below, but not above either. Just an ordinary person, whom nobody really pays attention to, except for friends and family. Without excessive obligations or the need to constantly stay at the top, without seeking to stand out...

Yes, in the end, isn't that freedom? Ordinary people possess their own form of freedom; they are like birds out of their cage. And that's probably for the best... That's what I'm seeking, after all: to be free and able to do what I wish, without having to unnecessarily stand out, without drawing attention.

... ... ... ... ...

As Uesugi apparently resumed our conversation, my attention was diverted by someone entering the class... My gaze stopped on her, yes, it was the courteous young girl who had approached me just before we got on the bus earlier.

Uesugi, noticing that I was staring at something, or rather someone, behind him, also turned around to see who was capturing my attention... At that moment, our gazes, the girl's and mine, met, and she gave me an elegant smile before heading to her seat, which apparently was right at the front to the right.

Uesugi, looking a bit lost, then turned back towards me, making me divert my gaze from the young girl.

Uesugi: You know that girl? You seemed to recognize each other... Suddenly, as if struck by a revelation, he stood up abruptly. Wait, no... He then pointed a finger at me theatrically. Don't tell me she's your girlfriend? Don't tell me you're one of those guys who neglect their studies for a love story. He crossed his arms and stared at me sternly, like a parent reprimanding their child. Ayanokoji!

Kiyotaka: I don't quite understand what you're trying to say... Moreover, I don't really know her, to be honest. Our only interaction took place earlier, at the bus stop, when she just asked if the bus was indeed going to ANHS. That's all.

Uesugi: Then, he relaxed and sat back down after my response. Ah, okay... I wasn't expecting that. I thought you were the type to neglect studies, but deep down, I was telling myself you weren't like that, huh?

It didn't take long before someone abruptly interrupted us by firmly knocking on his desk, capturing everyone's attention who turned towards him. Uesugi then straightened up in his chair, adopting a fully focused posture, arms crossed and back against the chair... It seems he takes school matters very seriously, doesn't it?

As for me, I simply turned my head to observe the man who must presumably be our teacher, as the class was now enveloped in a pleasant silence. He seemed to be a handsome man, in the age range of 20 to 30 years, with short, slightly tousled blond hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. His hair was styled back. He was quite tall, with a slim but athletic build.

Forger-sensei: Greetings. I hope your acclimatization to this establishment has been smooth so far. Allow me to introduce myself: I am Loid Forger, and I will have the privilege of teaching you science, in addition to taking on the responsibilities of your homeroom teacher within class S. Unlike most establishments, our structure does not reorganize classes with each new school year. As such, I will be in charge of guiding you through your three years of high school. The opening ceremony will be held in the gym in one hour. Until then, I will provide you with an overview of our school's specific rules as well as the welcome guide.

So, this is our teacher? He seems quite strict and speaks in a very refined manner. That makes sense, for a teacher at such a renowned school.

Shortly after, he began distributing to each first student of every row the specific rules of the high school as well as the welcome guide... That's intriguing. So, this school follows its own set of rules, different from those of other institutions? This piques my curiosity, I wonder how these rules differ... I will probably find out soon enough.

The student sitting in front of me then turned around to pass these documents to me. Facing me, her beauty immediately struck me. As she handed me the papers, I observed her for a moment.

She exuded a natural elegance, with her black hair neatly tied up. Her right eye, of an intense red, was visible, while her left eye remained hidden behind a lock of her black hair; I assumed it must be of the same striking color.

It seems I stared at her a bit too intensely, as she then gave me a smile that was both elegant and peculiar, while letting out a soft chuckle. Aware of my prolonged gaze, I chose to look away and refocus, sighing lightly as I accepted the documents she was handing me.

Kiyotaka: Ah, thank you.

Mysterious Girl: She favored me with an enigmatic smile, then replied softly. You're welcome, my dear.

After another smile, she turned around. This girl, both beautiful and enigmatic, seemed captivating. Her demeanor had something mysterious that drew attention...

When everyone had finished receiving the documents, the professor resumed speaking, holding what seemed to be a phone in his hand, his expression remaining impassive and serious.

Forger-sensei: I will now proceed to distribute your individual student ID cards. This card will serve you for purchases in all the shops and facilities available on campus, working on the principle of a credit card. However, be cautious about the amount of points you spend. The school provides you with a wide range of resources and equipment; if it's within the campus, you have the possibility to acquire it.

A points system replacing money, then? That is quite intriguing, once again. So, no matter the money one had before arriving here, rich or poor... Everyone starts with the same sum, no distinction between students?

Some might find this unfair, while others would be delighted... It's quite a bold choice on the part of the school. I wonder if it's a way to establish some form of equity and justice.

Forger-sensei: These cards operate on the same principle as a contactless bank card. To use them, you just have to swipe them on the dedicated terminals. The handling of these devices is designed to be intuitive, so you should encounter no difficulty. Points are credited automatically on the first day of each month. As of today, each of you already has 100,000 points on your card. For your information, know that 1 point is equivalent to 1 yen. That concludes my explanations...

In sum, as students of this school, we receive a monthly allowance of 100,000 yen from the institution. That's what one can expect from a school founded by the Japanese government.

100,000 yen is a significant sum offered to students as a monthly allowance... This should not be taken lightly. However, I think for some, this sum may not seem that significant, right? For my part, it suits me just fine. I tend to live minimally, so it's unlikely I'll spend 100,000 yen in a month.

The professor's explanations and announcement seem to have sparked quite a reaction, as I can now hear everyone starting to discuss among themselves, at least those who know each other, I suppose... Apparently, it has caused some commotion. And it seems that the professor, deliberately silent, was waiting, probably anticipating this type of reaction, which is quite logical considering what he had just announced.

Thoughtful Boy: One hundred thousand yen? That's... That's excessive for a student, per month no less! Could this not encourage irresponsibility and laziness?

Respectful Girl: Really, do you think so, president? Personally, I don't think it's that much... It's rather modest as an amount, isn't it?

Cold Girl: *Sigh*. Miss Kaguya, I think your perception of money has become a bit distorted... For someone like the president, who isn't very wealthy, it's probably a significant sum.

Respectful Girl: Oh, that's true... I apologize, president, it hadn't even crossed my mind... Well, in that case, I suppose I could still be satisfied with 100,000 yen, couldn't I?

Thoughtful Boy: It's not that important, but... How is it even possible to spend so much in a month? *Sigh*. Besides, I'm not president anymore, so just call me by my first name, okay? He offers them a simple smile.

Cold Girl: Yes, you're right. Okay, in that case, Miyuki.

Respectful Girl: She shot a cold look filled with a certain disdain at the girl, her eyes were probably terrifying, causing the other to avert her gaze nonchalantly. Then, she turned to the president. Alright, in that case, Mi- She began to stutter and blush for some reason, averting her gaze. M-M-Miy- Her blush intensified, before she finally completely turned away to refocus on the professor, replying hastily. President!

I heard different conversations beginning to emerge among my classmates. It looks like this amount has piqued everyone's curiosity, hasn't it? Well, who wouldn't be intrigued? After all, it's a significant sum...

Extroverted Girl: One hundred thousand yen, huh, hehehehe... it's starting to get really interesting, don't you guys think? Oh yeah, this school, it's clearly not normal! I feel like we really made the right decision to come here together, huh?

Extroverted Boy: That's the least one can say, Mion!!! I think this is the first time in my life I've said I'm going to enjoy school, ahahaha!! Oh yeah, and with 100,000 yen a month, it's clear, we're really going to be able to enjoy ourselves!!

Shy Girl: Yes, but still be careful... I mean, as Mii-chan said, this isn't a normal school, and I feel like this professor is hiding something... Hauuu, I don't really know, but let's try not to spend it all in one month, okay? Okay? Let's be mindful!

Extroverted Boy: Huh, what do you mean, Rena? The professor is hiding something? And then, frankly, you'd have to be pretty stupid to blow 100,000 yen in one month, right?

Extroverted Girl: Hehehe, as expected of our dear Rena, it seems you've also spotted something, huh? She sported a smile full of pride before continuing. Yeah, you really have to be brainless to spend that much in so little time, as you say, kiddo. But think about it from another angle, you too, Rena... It could have caught anyone, yes, it's even at the level of our club, hehehehe... But unfortunately, you'd have to get up pretty early to manage to fool this old branch.

Extroverted Boy: Huh? What? What are you trying to say, Mion? I don't get it... Is there something I missed? Aaaah, I can't keep up!! Please explain!!

Shy Girl: Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking... So, there really is something fishy, isn't there? Isn't there? She takes a short pause before continuing, offering a kind smile to the boy. Don't worry, Keiichi-kun, I'm sure you'll end up understanding everything, sooner or later, hau~!

Extroverted Boy: Huh? But why can't you just tell me now what you mean by that?! I don't understand, is it so complicated to explain to me clearly?!!

Extroverted Girl: So, kiddo, you're a member of our club, right? A little mystery like this shouldn't be a problem for you, huh? As the president of the Hinamizawa game club, I'd be really disappointed if you started begging for the answer so easily, hehehe... Come on, Kei-chan, I'm sure you'll quickly get what we're trying to say, just pay attention to the clues given.

It seems that everyone is seriously starting to think... I guess for those who didn't have much money before, or who didn't really care about it, it's a difficult concept to grasp. The discussions continue as the professor remains leaned against the board, legs and arms crossed, watching us with his sharp gaze. It's somewhat disconcerting, isn't it?

Kind Girl: Aqua-kun, did you see? 100,000 yen... It almost seems like a dream, doesn't it? It's... it's huge for high school students like us, right? What do you think?

Cold Boy: The boy took a moment, his gaze darkening as if weighing each word before speaking. Yes, it is. And that's exactly what's wrong. Be careful with your actions and try not to waste your money needlessly.

Kind Girl: Huh? What are you trying to say, Aqua-kun... I mean, with all this money, we shouldn't really have any worries, should we? But... you must have something in mind, don't you? Why do you say I should be careful?

Cold Boy: He paused, his gaze lost in thought. Don't you find it strange? I mean, even for a school funded by the state, 100,000 yen a month, that's 1,200,000 yen a year for a single student. And over three years, that adds up to 3,600,000 yen, just for one student. For the whole class, without any dropouts, we're talking about 90,000,000 yen over three years, for a single class. Seems excessive, doesn't it? What I mean is, there must be something hidden behind all this. He stopped, looking even more thoughtful. I don't have all the pieces of the puzzle yet, but I'm convinced there's something... That's all I can say for now. So, just be careful with how you use your money.

Kind Girl: She displayed an authentically surprised expression, pausing to reflect. Oh... I hadn't even thought about it, but now that you mention it, it is a bit weird, isn't it? You're amazing, you know, Aqua-kun? You managed to deduce all that and do these calculations in an instant, as if it was just a little exercise... Of course, I already knew you were smart, but it's always impressive to see you in action, ahaha!

Cold Boy: He sighed lightly. Honestly, I haven't made much progress. I haven't deduced anything concrete, there must be more... And I'm probably not the only one. If you look around, I'm convinced you'll see other people coming to this conclusion quite easily.

Kind Girl: Mmmh... But to me, I'm convinced that you're really smart, Aqua-kun. I mean, yes, it's possible that some other people might have deduced it, considering we're in an elite class, but I doubt they're many, you know! You have a gift for seeing things that others don't, that's for sure.

Cold Boy: *Sigh*. If you say so...

I myself focused on the discussions, like the professor, simply wondering what the others thought of all this.

Arrogant Boy: Leaning back slightly in his chair, adopting a posture where arrogance and disdain mixed into his silhouette, he crossed his arms and legs, exuding an aura of icy superiority. His sharp, disdainful gaze fell on the person beside him. In a voice cold, tinged with palpable arrogance, he articulated with contempt. Kirigiri-san, is it possible that you are also naively affected by such an insignificant sum? Hmph, typical. It seems that the lower classes lose their composure in front of such trifles.

Kirigiri-san: *Sigh*. No, that wasn't the focus of my thoughts... Even for students, it's a considerable sum. Perhaps insignificant in your eyes, but objectively, it's not negligible, especially considering the number of participants... Several elements don't add up, anyway. I was simply pondering Forger-sensei's words.

Arrogant Boy: Displaying an arrogant smile while turning his gaze away from her, Hmph, I figured you'd realize that, it was quite obvious after all. For the government, spending some 150 million yen for just one year, and that for first-year students, assuming each class has 25 students... even for supposed elites, it seems trivial.

Kirigiri-san: After a moment of reflection, she sighed softly. Anyway, we'll see what happens... I don't think it's that important for now. Only a fool would spend so much money in a month.

That's quite right, actually... I mean, considering this sum as very high, who would spend so much in a month in high school? I'm not sure I want to know the answer to that.

Excited Boy: Oh my, Saihara-chaaaan~! Isn't it just crazy? With 100,000 yen a month, we could almost buy the world, don't you think? Come on, admit it, it's tempting, right?

Saihara: He scratched his head, avoiding the gaze of his interlocutor, a shadow of doubt crossing his face. Uh... I'm not really sure what to think... I mean, yes, it's a lot of money and all, but that's exactly what bothers me. Why would the government invest so much in students, even if they are elite? The budget isn't unlimited, after all... There must be something behind it. And then, we are in a school like no other, so maybe... His voice faded, as if he feared he had already said too much or misinterpreted the situation.

Excited Boy: Ah, seriously? Our little detective has unearthed a secret? Pfff, as if that was a scoop! It's so obvious, you know. Oh, don't tell me you'd strut around for such a trivial find? For a detective, it's almost laughable! Nishishi!

Saihara: He averted his gaze, a glimmer of hesitation in his eyes. Ah? Uh, I... I was just thinking, you know? I'm probably not the only one to... to think about that, right? Wait, Kokichi, you... you've understood everything, haven't you? I mean, about this situation... And maybe other things? His voice dropped almost to a whisper.

Kokichi: Ohoh~? But of course, it's obvious... Wait, you're not seriously brooding over this, are you? Hey, Shuichi-chou, it's a bit embarrassing for a detective, don't you think? Ahaha!! It's incredible, I had figured everything out even before you started to doubt. Without me, you'd be lost, right?

Saihara: He nervously adjusted his cap, looking down before responding in an uncertain voice. Ah? Oh, uh, I... I'm not really sure I'm qualified to be called a detective right now... A-And, huh? You mean that... you've already figured it all out? Uh, I mean, I was thinking about it too, but... Could you share your thoughts? Just to see if... if it matches what I had in mind, or if you've discovered something I haven't seen?

Kokichi: Oh, I could never reveal that to you, you know why~? Because all of that was a big lie!! Nishishi!

Saihara: He let out a small sigh, marked by a touch of resignation. Y-Yeah, of course...

This class seems to gather all kinds of people, some quite interesting... It's normal, after all, a class needs diversity, doesn't it? I wonder if I could forge friendships with others here.

Kind Girl: Did you hear, Kazuto? 100,000 yen a month, it's incredible, don't you think? Even for the most prestigious schools in Japan, it's significant, right?

Reserved Boy: Hmm, honestly, it's a huge amount. How do they manage to release so much money just for one school, and just for a scholarship per student... It seems exaggerated. Is there something we missed, or what?

Kind Girl: Hmm, I see what you mean... I was also asking myself the same question. But maybe we're overthinking it, don't you think? After all, why would they seek to trap or deceive us?

Reserved Boy: Ahah, yeah, it's true that it's not an ordinary school. We'll end up understanding what's going on, anyway.

I'm really wondering about the subject of their conversation... Why so much reflection just about this detail? Shouldn't they just rejoice at receiving such a sum of money for the month? After all, there's not really something hidden or to deduce in the professor's words, is there?

Shy Boy: O-one hundred thousand yen... It's almost like a dream, huh? It's huge, hard to imagine all the possibilities... What do you think, Karma?

Sarcastic Boy: He let out a mocking chuckle, displaying a smile full of mischief as he slouched casually in his chair. My opinion? Ah, it's fascinating, really... This school has its little charm, doesn't it? I didn't have high expectations, but something tells me we're going to have fun. Hehe, what joy!

Shy Boy: What do you mean, Karma? What are you saying?

Sarcastic Boy: Pff, don't take what I say too seriously, don't worry about it, Nagisa... I bet you'll grasp the depth of my thoughts very soon.

Shy Boy: Ahaha, sometimes, I admit I struggle to follow you, Karma... But I think I get a bit where you're going... well, I think?

As I stared into the space in front of me, elbow propped on the table and palm supporting my jaw, I heard Uesugi beside me. Then, I turned my eyes towards him to see him appear somewhat perplexed, also a bit confused and seeming to struggle to believe what he was seeing, he looked genuinely shocked... Well, I suppose his reaction is normal, once again.

Uesugi: A-A hundred thousand yen, that's huge! I mean, it's great and all, but... We're just high school students, and this encourages more distraction than study! It's supposed to be an elite school, right? All this is going to do is devalue the importance of money!

Kiyotaka: With my arms propped on the table, I stared into the space in front of me. Indeed, it represents a considerable amount for many, it's undeniable... However, I doubt it will cause real problems. As you mentioned, we are in an elite school. Students of this high school should be able to control their desires and cravings.

Uesugi: Uesugi clenched his fist tightly while staring at me. You're too naive, Ayanokoji! Few people think like you today; high school students are extremely impressionable, and laziness prevails! There are so many high schoolers who prioritize leisure over studies, and this kind of thing only encourages them, it's harmful! Seriously, those five idiots will just take it as a chance to slack off even more, I feel like I'll have even more work to do, argh... He sighed before straightening up in his chair. And then, when you think about it, there's really something wrong with this idea. Why distribute so much money in monthly allowances to high school students who are supposed to be the elite, at the risk of distracting them from their studies? It's completely counterproductive and incomprehensible.

Kiyotaka: Slightly turning my head to look at him, I observed him for a moment before redirecting my attention towards the teacher. You must be right, it surely represents a significant amount of money...

It seems Uesugi takes his studies very seriously, doesn't he? He must really be part of the elite, after all... Accepting his help with studies would probably be very beneficial to me, considering I'm an average student. He could certainly be of great help in this area, and then... why not accept the offer from my very first friend?

However, the general chatter came to an end when the teacher cleared his throat to draw attention back to him, before continuing to speak with his impassive voice, in that stern and cold tone.

Forger-sensei: It seems this information has caused quite a reaction among you, hasn't it? Are some of you surprised by the amount of points awarded? For your information, this school assesses the capabilities of its students. All those who have crossed the threshold of this institution through the entrance exam have demonstrated a certain merit and value. The sum allocated reflects your skills. You are encouraged to use it freely. However, it's important to note that all points will be revoked at the end of your schooling. Since it's not possible to convert these points into cash, saving has no advantage. The way you choose to use your points is entirely up to you. Invest them in what pleases you or what you need. If you feel that some of your points are superfluous, you have the option to transfer them to another student, in a gesture of generosity. However, I would like to emphasize that any form of intimidation to acquire points from others is strictly prohibited. The school enforces a very strict policy on harassment. He paused before continuing. Well, are there any questions at this stage?

This makes sense... Such a renowned school would certainly pay very close attention to issues such as harassment and discrimination. The teacher then scanned the room with his penetrating gaze, waiting in silence for someone to possibly ask questions... He seems to be waiting for something specific, but what exactly? Everyone wouldn't stop talking about it... Unfortunately, I don't think I have the necessary skills to delve deeper into this thought.

After a moment of silence, a hand started to rise. It was that of a fair-skinned young girl, with long black hair held back by a black and red ribbon, with a lock of hair on each side of her face, large almond-shaped red eyes, fine eyebrows, and a slim but feminine figure, a discreet chest.

But just as she was raising her hand, she almost immediately retracted it when a dull noise was heard, caused by someone hitting their desk with both hands as they stood up abruptly, but with a certain elegance... Yes, it was the remarkable girl from the bus stop, who had just stood up like that, a graceful smile on her lips. It almost seemed like she had waited for someone else to take the initiative to intervene and cut off her gesture, maybe I'm thinking too much about it. I wondered what question she was going to ask, what her purpose was...

She then spoke with the same tone she had used with me earlier, in an elegant manner.

Polite Girl: Forgive me, Forger-sensei, but I do indeed have a few questions to ask you, if you don't mind? Her smile was tinged with a slightly different shade than before, while still being imbued with cordiality.

She's so polite and respectful, in addition to being charming... I'm really lucky to be in her class, aren't I?

However, her sudden intervention caught the teacher's interest, who now fixes her with his piercing gaze, all his attention turned towards her.

Forger-sensei: Miss Erika Furudo, if I'm not mistaken? For future reference, I would appreciate it if you could refrain from such actions. Please raise your hand in the future if you wish to speak. It seems someone else wanted to ask a question.

Polite Girl: *Giggle* *giggle*. Please excuse me, sir, I'm just a bit excited about this whole situation.

Forger-sensei: Very well, Furudo-san, I believe you had a question? I'm listening, go ahead.

Furudo: Well, if I'm not mistaken, you mentioned something like "if it's available within the campus, then it is possible to obtain it", or a similar formulation, correct? I'd like to understand exactly what you imply by that. I'm looking for clarifications... If this rule isn't explicitly defined, it could surely lead to misunderstandings, don't you think? Thus, I would really appreciate it if you could elaborate on what you mean by "as long as it's available on the campus, it is possible to acquire it".

Forger-sensei: Forger-sensei observed Furudo with calculated intensity before finally responding, adopting the same methodical approach as before. I see... Indeed, there's nothing more to specify. All necessary details are recorded in the regulations. I regret, but I will not provide additional information on this matter. He slightly lifted his head. Do you have any other questions, Furudo-san?

Furudo: Furudo, without responding immediately, offered Forger-sensei a nonchalant smile. Oh, but actually, I already know the answer to that question, and I presume your reaction would be the same for any question I might pose, wouldn't it? She let her words hang for a moment before continuing. These are only hypotheses for now, but I certainly wouldn't want to be the only one to savor the resolution of this mystery... I'm convinced others would like to join me, wouldn't they? *Giggle* *giggle* *giggle*.

She let out a light giggle, plunging the room into a silence where she continued to stare at Forger-sensei with intensity... She's truly fascinating.

Her behavior suggests she's already guessed everything, with a hint of arrogance, as if she's amused by the situation... Or maybe I'm overinterpreting her actions? After all, she's simply insightful and probably pleased with her deductions, which is logical, I suppose... Regardless, she clearly shows that she has brains, there's no doubt about that.

The entire class was watching the scene, each reacting in their own way... Until finally, someone slammed their fist on their desk as they stood up nonchalantly, also placing down... a person they were holding on their laps? Yes, the whole class then turned towards him, and Furudo simply directed her gaze towards this new figure, her smile seeming to widen at this interruption...

It was a tall, slender young man, with smooth skin and tousled red hair. His red eyes were rimmed, probably the result of too much gaming without rest, displaying a mischievous smile on his face. And at his side, sitting on his lap, was a young girl... Much too young to be in high school, she must have been about 11 years old. Cute, with pale skin and long hair in shades of blue, pink, and green, often worn down with a small ponytail on the side, her large passive eyes shone with golden/yellow-red-pink hues. She had a rather slim figure.

I really wonder about the reason for a child, a little girl, being here. Isn't it unusual? Moreover, she was sitting on his lap, not having her own seat since there were no spare desks available... I suppose I should not dwell too much on conjectures anyway.

Confident Boy: Ah, what a pleasant surprise you have given us... Erika, is it? I see you're interesting and quite cute, which is already a good start. But what impresses me even more is that you seem intelligent and polite. It's quite rare these days to come across someone like you.

Isn't that a bit too familiar on his part? I mean, he directly called her by her first name casually, as if it were the most natural thing... However, I must admit that I agree with his viewpoint, despite the familiarity.

In response, Erika offered him a new smile, with the ease she masters so well.

Furudo: I appreciate your compliments, sir...

Confident Boy: Ah, let me introduce myself properly then - I'm Sora Raifu, but you can just call me Sora, Erika. Otherwise, we might create a little confusion with my sister, ahaha!

Furudo: Once more, she offered him a nonchalant smile. Perfect, Sora-san. I was just going to say that these are mere deductions in anticipation of the resolution, right?

Sora: His smile widened, tinged with obvious mischief. Ahaha, of course, it was evident... Even someone who doesn't consider themselves an "elite" could have reached this conclusion, don't you think? After all, even the author had managed to uncover all this. He chuckled slightly, then continued. And the questions you posed, they weren't really to get direct answers, huh? It was pretty clear he wouldn't just serve everything up on a platter simply because we asked. If that were the case, he would have stated it from the beginning... And then, we are in an academy that claims to be elite, where every deduction, every judgment must be up to par. Ahahah! What you were trying to do was just test the waters, right? Simple but ingenious, just to confirm that there was indeed something to uncover... Because if there really was nothing to dig up, he would have had no reason to dodge our questions, right?

Furudo: <Good>! Pronouncing this word, she elegantly pointed her finger toward Sora. That's exactly it, Sora-san... I am not more surprised than that to find individuals capable of reflection in a school hosting the elite.

Sora: Ahahahaha! Seriously, if I couldn't deduce that, I definitely wouldn't belong in this high school. His smug smile intensified even more. And honestly, coming across a girl as captivating and charming as you here? I would never have bet on it.

In response, Furudo simply returned a smile while letting out a light giggle.

This exchange had a somewhat peculiar aspect, giving the impression that the two had engaged in a conversation while the rest of the class was merely spectators, watching without intervening... A reason for this could very well be that the author did not want to manage the interaction of 25 characters simultaneously, which would have been as complicated to write as to read.

While observing them discreetly, I noticed Forger-sensei let out a slight sigh before standing up. And finally, he spoke up, interrupting the exchange between the two, who then directed their attention toward him.

Forger-sensei: I am sorry to interrupt, but if you wish to speak, I would ask you to please wait for a more appropriate time... This is not the moment for that right now.

Furudo: Furudo turned again toward Forger-sensei, displaying a new smile. Oh, I am really sorry Forger-sensei, I got distracted. *Giggle* *giggle* *giggle*.

Sora: Ahaha, yes, it seems we both got carried away. It's true, it's not every day you come across people who stand out...

Forger-sensei: After a brief pause, observing each in turn, he sighed. Very well, I presume then you have other questions or comments to add?

It seems that Forger-sensei is beginning to get impatient... Which is understandable, after all. Consequently, Furudo and Sora stopped their exchange and both turned toward Forger-sensei.

Sora: Sora's mischievous smile broadened, and he slid his hands into his pockets. Questions? Oh, no, not at all.

Furudo: Facts, on the other hand, we do have, obviously. I am convinced that anyone with intellect in this class will grasp where we are getting at.

Individuals with intellect? Well, I should perhaps pay attention, as being an average student, I might not have fully grasped the nuances... Everyone seemed focused, some displaying smiles on their faces, while others didn't appear very concentrated, and a few observed the scene earnestly.

It looks like we're about to learn something more, right?

Forger-sensei: *Sigh*. In that case, please, speak up and share what you wish to say with the entire class.

In response, Furudo offered a new smile, turning her head from side to side to observe the people around her... She paused for a moment when our eyes met, giving me a slightly different smile.

I wonder what's going through her mind... She seems very intelligent, not an ordinary student like me. Honestly, I feel very honored and a bit excited that someone like her would pay attention to me. She is likely to become very popular among the boys...

Furudo: To begin, let's go back to what was discussed earlier... You mentioned that we could buy anything at this school without specifying this "anything" when I asked you, simply responding that you could not provide more details. I consider this as sufficient proof... So, we can acquire anything and everything, including services, right? Out of pure curiosity, Forger-sensei, at what price would you sell the complete explanations? She gave him another smile, this one even more casual.

This is a relevant thought; I hadn't considered it myself... So everything can be bought here? Thinking about it, it makes sense... I should have figured it out myself. Acquiring all this information would certainly be wise to verify, but... I doubt they would come cheaply.

Forger-sensei: I see... It is a relevant reflection, and I expected such quality of reasoning from class S. He looked at Furudo, then Sora, and finally at all the students before continuing. If you earnestly desire it, I could divulge the information you seek in exchange for 2,500,000 private points...

2,500,000 points, huh? Each of us receives 100,000 private points, multiply that by 25, and it gives 2,500,000... I understand, so his price is simply the sum of all the private points, meaning the current entire monetary reserve of all students. He seems determined not to disclose this information easily...

This situation seemed to amuse Sora, who started to chuckle lightly.

Sora: 2,500,000 private points? That's really low, Forger-sensei. You're literally talking about gathering all the private points of the entire class... You're not planning to disclose them easily, are you?

Forger-sensei: *Sigh*. Traditionally, it is up to the seller to set the price, right? There are many ways to acquire resources, both in society and here, within this school. Thus, if you are willing to give up all your private points and start from scratch, I will agree to provide all the required information. He then sketched a very subtle, almost imperceptible smile. However, there is another method to obtain this information, but it requires your trust and the patience to wait until next month.

It seems he is testing our willingness to spend such a sum jointly to acquire the desired information, but that would require the agreement of all students, which would undoubtedly be quite complex... While some might easily agree, others would categorically oppose.

He suggested an alternative form of payment? That might be tempting; he probably expects us to play along, one way or another... However, it seems Furudo and Erika do not share this view.

Furudo: Really? Oh, but don't worry about us, I assure you these clues are more than enough to arrive at conclusions and deductions... Right, Sora-san?

Sora: Ahahahaha!! You're becoming more and more captivating, Erika. I really do not regret joining this game. His smile becomes even more mischievous. So, of course... You mentioned there was another form of payment, right? And that we should wait until the beginning of next month to find out what it is... I assume this means we will get some answers next month, correct? Not necessarily all the information, obviously, but at least those regarding this "other payment" you mentioned.

Furudo: <Good>. Excellent, Sora-san. Moreover, you indeed implied that this payment was accessible to the entire class... And then, why specify "private points," I wonder? Could it be possible that there are also collective points?

Sora: Yes, that's an excellent deduction... In Japan, no one talks about "private yen," so why not just talk about "points"? His mischievous smile widens before he continues. The question remains then: what is this other method of payment? Honestly, I might not have immediately thought of collective points, but now that you mention it, it indeed seems logical. Ahahaha! You impress me, Erika, truly.

So, this new means of payment would involve some sort of collaborative fund or something of the sort within the class? That's an interesting hypothesis.

There was still something quite strange... Furudo's attitude had slightly changed, hadn't it? I felt she had become a bit more arrogant suddenly, as if she had figured everything out and was now engaging the only student who had stood up earlier, as if it were a game for her... She is indeed captivating, this girl. Has she already deciphered everything? Anyway, I probably couldn't go any further in my understanding... Could I?

Sora is undeniably smart, well above average, but it seems there's something more to him... Maybe I'm thinking too much, after all.

As I suspected and as everyone sensed... They were not going to accept Forger-sensei's offer. Furudo seems very confident in her deduction abilities, so she would likely refuse... As for Sora, he would probably do the same.

Forger-sensei: He didn't react immediately, evidently without a concrete answer to offer, just sighed. Understood... It seems this class is going to be particularly captivating. So, what is the end point of your reasoning? You seem to have a certain idea, Furudo-san.

Sora: Ahahaha!! It does indeed seem there are several interesting people here. Then he turns to Furudo. I must say, I am also quite intrigued by what you will reveal. Come on, Erika, it seems you have deduced much more than that, haven't you?

Furudo: *Giggle* *giggle* *giggle*. Very well, if you are so eager and desirous to know, who am I to deny you that? Actually, the answer is quite simple, dear all. I am convinced that some of you have already managed to put the pieces of the puzzle together and understand where I am getting at.

Why did she look at me while speaking? Could it be that she suspects I grasp where she is heading with this? Maybe she's slightly overestimating me.

After this exchange, Sora decided to sit down again, his little sister apparently reclaiming her spot on his lap, remaining silent... He seemed to have finished saying what he wanted, his mischievous smile still in place, observing Furudo with interest. It's true that Furudo is a person who captures attention, endowed with a character deeply intriguing.

Furudo: Why consider that it's probably about points shared among us, or even, that some assume to be class points? Well, several arguments have already been put forward on this subject... However, there remains an aspect to elucidate, and I am convinced that some among you have already grasped it. *Giggle* *giggle*.

She emitted a slightly arrogant chuckle, letting her words hang in the air before speaking again, her smile becoming slightly more smug.

An aspect to elucidate? I wonder what she's alluding to...

Furudo: Forger-sensei, what is your reaction if I tell you that this school operates on a form of hierarchy, similar to that of society? That our distribution in the classes is not random and that I could even argue that this class is the most elitist among all the first-year classes, and not just because I am part of it. She now fixes Forger-sensei with a smile that could be interpreted as even more casual, verging on arrogance. And I'm also willing to bet that you relegated all the rejects and the dregs of society to class D.

It seems she's genuinely amusing herself with the situation. The professor, who had maintained a stoic attitude until then, saw his expression change... He now displayed a more skeptical and perplexed look, frowning while observing Furudo attentively.

It's interesting, it appears that events are taking an unexpected turn...? And this seemed to amuse Furudo even more, who reacted by displaying a less refined smile, chuckling in a somewhat haughtier manner.

Furudo: <Good>, *giggle* *giggle* *giggle*. Observing your reaction, it seems I may have struck a nerve, haven't I? Allow me then to continue. *Giggle* *giggle*. In fact, I had already begun contemplating this even before joining this high school... Why would there be a "class S" in a school where classes are normally designated from A to D? What happened to the other letters? It would have been hard to make it more obvious, wouldn't it? It was almost too evident for me to bother with, but now, everything aligns clearly, Forger-sensei. Her tone became slightly less refined, veering toward a touch of arrogance. This undeniably suggests a hierarchy, with class D at the bottom of the ladder, and class S gathering the crème de la crème. And the mere fact that I am in this class only confirms this hypothesis, doesn't it? *Giggle* *giggle* ahahahahaha!

Indeed... What complex reasoning, right? Could I have deduced such a thing? Probably not... After all, I am just an ordinary student, far from being at her level. She demonstrates remarkable intelligence, that's undeniable... And here I hadn't even started to consider such a perspective. I wonder what Uesugi and the others think of all this?

The professor now displayed a confused and even more perplexed expression towards Furudo, not averting his gaze... Although he didn't show it openly, he seemed slightly disconcerted, yet engrossed in his thoughts.

Reactions around varied: some displayed different types of smiles, others appeared astonished, while a few remained indifferent... Uesugi looked astounded, watching the scene with seriousness and confusion. Furudo's laughter had intensified, taking on a more mocking and arrogant tone... Apparently, she's not as straightforward to define as the mere image of a kind, cute, intelligent, and respectful girl, is she? Although, in reality, she's just unraveling mysteries for the class, isn't that true?

At last... After laughing in such a manner, Furudo executed an elegant curtsy, grasping her dress with both hands, a mischievous smile adorning her face, before speaking again.

Furudo: Simple by the existence of this high school, this level of reasoning was possible for Furudo Erika. What do you think, ladies and gentlemen?

Her demeanor became more arrogant, though she maintained her elegance... It seemed she had transformed for a moment, even though I haven't known her for long.

Her last statement seemed to conclude her argument, leaving the class immersed in a questioning silence, with the professor observing Furudo intensely.

I must acknowledge she is even more captivating than I had envisioned. She is likely to become one of the central figures of our class... She appears as socially competent as she is intelligent and refined. The complete opposite of me, perhaps? The first impression she left probably anticipates a lot of respect and admiration from our peers.

... ... ... ... ...

After a brief silent pause, the calm was interrupted by what seemed to be a phone ringing. The noise apparently came from Forger-sensei... He took the phone out of his pocket to see who was calling, and at that moment, his expression turned even more perplexed. He then started heading toward the door to leave the room.

Forger-sensei: Um... Please excuse me, it's necessary that I leave now. We will meet again later. Enjoy the entrance ceremony that will take place shortly.

An emergency, apparently? Probably nothing that directly concerns us, in any case. Forger-sensei didn't add anything or exchange any other looks; he just picked up his phone and held it to his ear while leaving the classroom, closing the door behind him. We were now all alone in the room...

After his departure, the calm was quickly broken by student conversations, discussing everything that had happened with Furudo, as well as various theories. When I heard Uesugi addressing me, I turned toward him to listen to what he had to say.

Uesugi: W-Well, that was really something... I didn't expect such behavior at all... That girl, uh, Furudo, she's quite unique.

Kiyotaka: She is quite remarkable, isn't she? At least with her here, everyone in the class will be informed...

Uesugi: Yes... Indeed, I had some hunches, but I probably couldn't have deduced all that myself. She has an exceptional deduction capability...

Kiyotaka: Yes, I agree. Furudo is truly exceptional...

Uesugi: And so, if this entire school is structured according to a hierarchy, that would mean we are the best, right?

Kiyotaka: In theory, maybe... But then, I wonder about my own presence here. I have nothing exceptional like Furudo, and I certainly don't have your level of intelligence.

Uesugi: Come on, Ayanokoji, I've told you not to underestimate yourself! This is a school for the elite, and they conduct thorough research on students before placing them in their respective classes... It's surely no accident that you're in class S! Then he paused, lost in thought. Now that I think about it, yes, actually, it makes sense that there is a hierarchy. Those five idiots all ended up together in class D, and the probability of that happening by chance would be really slim...

Furudo's explanations were indeed clear, and observing the professor's reaction, one might deduce she was on point...

Uesugi seems to encourage me not to underestimate myself, but I'm just facing reality, aren't I? I really wonder about the reasons for my presence in the highest class. I see no clear justification for it.
