Chapter 27: Summoned: By a Pervert?

In the peculiar luminescence that filled the upper abyss—a realm where "day" was a concept conveyed not by the sun but by the intensifying glow of the abyss itself—Lior found himself in confrontation. The environment, illuminated by a diffuse glow that penetrated even the deepest crevices, cast an otherworldly light on the looming conflict.

The demon he faced was not one of formidable size or overwhelming strength but rather a creature of cunning and subtlety: a demon amoeba.

This peculiar being thrived in the ambient light of the abyss, absorbing it into its gelatinous form, making it a tricky opponent to discern. Its body was composed of a malleable mass with camoflagic properties, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. For Lior, whose essence was pure light, this foe posed a unique challenge—not through the might of its attacks but through the guile of its nature.

As they engaged, the demon amoeba sought to envelop Lior, extending parts of itself in an attempt to absorb his radiance, to diminish the beacon that he was. Yet, Lior, undeterred by the deceptive simplicity of his opponent, maneuvered with a grace that belied his age. His light, rather than being diminished, became a weapon of precision, a blade that carved through the shifting forms of the amoeba.

With a strategic focus, Lior channeled his light into concentrated bursts, each one a targeted strike against the amoeba's core. The creature, for all its ability to absorb and camouflage, found itself outmatched by the purity and intensity of Lior's luminescence. At a decisive moment, Lior's light penetrated the amoeba, shattering its form into harmless fragments that faded into the abyssal light.

The encounter, though brief, was a testament to Lior's adaptability and the unique strength that he wielded within the abyss's illuminated day.

In the quiet that followed, Lior's thoughts wandered to Roxana, the enigmatic demon who had approached him with an offer of kinship. Her assurance and demeanor had initially struck Lior as out of place.

She seemed younger, her vibrancy and free spirit a stark contrast to his own solitude and battle-scarred existence. How could she, appearing so untouched by the abyss's harsh realities, understand his solitude, his struggle?

The abyss had taught Lior to approach everything with caution. But Roxana, with her curious gaze and unwavering smile, offered him a chance at companionship he had long believed to be impossible. Although his trust was hard-won, the loneliness that had been his only constant companion compelled him to accept her offer.

"Clap, clap, you did well, Lior. I'm so proud of my brother," Roxana's voice echoed through the landscape, her figure emerging with a grace that seemed to command the environment around her.

Lior, still adjusting to the unexpected role Roxana had thrust upon him, managed only a noncommittal grunt in response. "Yeah, whatever," he muttered, the glow around him dimming slightly, as if in reflection of his reluctance to fully embrace this newfound bond.

Roxana, undeterred by his tepid reaction, beamed with excitement. "It's time, Lior. You're ready now" she announced, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

Over the past month, Roxana has assumed the dual roles of mentor and explorer. Roxana had been training Lior, but she had also not stopped exploring.

In other low ranking demons, it was common to establish themselves at a particular location, keep gathering souls, and if you were lucky, you might come across an altar at some point in your life. Roxana, on the other hand, was always willing to take the initiative and explore new areas.

Since she was not afraid of anything in the upper abyss, she was able to explore any area freely. Her continual exploration and advancement were naturally rewarded. She had come across three altars so far, but had refrained from going because she was preparing Lior for the trip.

According to her observations thus far, altars in the Abyss were elusive, and their locations were unpredictable. While some were hidden within caverns, as if protecting their secrets from unwary eyes, others stood in open fields, exposed yet no less daunting.

One event that had etched itself into Roxana's memory occurred when an altar, situated in the midst of an open field, had activated unexpectedly. Its glow had attracted the attention of countless low-ranking demons, all drawn by the allure of crossing over or gaining strength.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn when a middle-ranking demon emerged from the altar, its aura overpowering and its intent evident.

With a power that seemed to warp the very air around it, this demon had managed to take a thousand low-ranking demons with it, leaving an air of awe and fear in its wake. Due to the unpredictable nature of the altars and the phenomena that Roxana witnessed, she decided to wait and train Lior prior to venturing elsewhere.

On their journey to the altar Roxana had discovered, the air between them was light, filled with the promise of adventure. Roxana, ever the optimist, seemed to walk with a spring in her step, while Lior, more reserved, still couldn't hide the intrigued glint in his eyes.

"There's no telling where this altar might take us, or if a middle-rank demon is waiting on the other side," Roxana mused, breaking the silence. "But you know what? I trust us."

"Hmm", Lior nodded.

As they stood in front of the altar, its light began to pulse—a sign that an offering was being made. This time, however, two middle-quality souls were offered as catalysts, rather than the anticipated bodies and blood. This deviation from the norm piqued Roxana's curiosity, marking a departure from her prior experience with altars.

Turning to Lior, she shared her observation, her voice laced with intrigue. "This is different from last time. I was expecting the usual offerings. Two souls, and of middle quality at that, is something new."

Lior, equally puzzled, nodded in agreement since he had never seen an altar before. Before they could delve further into speculation, Roxana conjured her magic to shroud Lior in a deceptive veil, dimming the radiant light that was his essence. This precaution, she hoped, would mask him from immediate danger if any threat awaited them as they transitioned into the unknown realm.

As the glow of the altar enveloped them, the familiar sensation of being pulled across a vast expanse of dimensions took hold. In mere moments, they found themselves in the middle of a river, an environment vastly different from the abyssal depths they had just left behind.

Their arrival was greeted with a voice that dripped with condescension and disappointment. "Huh, I was expecting a full-grown female demon as I had modified the summoning accordingly. But all I got is a child and pigsquit, where did I go wrong?" the voice sneered, its disdain palpable.

Lior was about to retaliate at the insult, his protective light flickering with his rising anger, but Roxana placed a calming hand on his shoulder, a silent plea for patience.

The voice continued, unabated. "But you were able to be summoned, hence you at least have the strength of a middle-rank demon as anyone less in strength would have been rejected. Ahh, I need to summon again. Here I was expecting a succubus to release some stress, but then again, a fox brat isn't bad, the only problem is that she appears a little underdeveloped.

If this fox brat was just three years older..." the voice mused out loud, its tone unsettling as it seemed to visually devour Roxana's form.
