Chapter 40: Wolf of the moon

I moved through a city that was taken over by greenery, plants grew everywhere, probably because of the lack of humans around, but the city has been completely dominated by plants, trees and flowers.

It's a very beautiful sight.

It's been a few hours since the exam started, and a few hours since I arrived in this city, and I have no clue of where I'm going. I've been walking for hours, but I still haven't found a way out of the city, or a monster, or another person.

I'm lost.

As I walked aimlessly through the green city, I began to whistle, a habit I picked up from the old man. Whistling was a way to destress for me, I created a beautiful and calming melody. Although I don't think I'm anywhere near as skilled as the old man, I consider myself pretty good.

Suddenly a bird came to me while I was whistling and started floating around, the animal moved through the rhythm of the whistle, as if it was dancing, and I quickly found myself laughing.

"You're so smart" I said as I moved my hand towards the bird, allowing it to land on my palm, "How are you so good?"

The bird caressed my hand and then began to float once again.

Chirp! Chirp!

"Are you leaving?"

The bird surprisingly shook his head.

Chirp! Chirp!

"Where are you going?"

Chirp! Chirp!

The bird flew in my hand and started trying to pull me.

"Are you asking me to follow you?"

The bird nodded.

Chirp! Chirp!

I laughed, "Good, I was lost anyway"

Then the bird started flying ahead and I followed it. I'll keep this as a secret, the fact that I talked with a bird and decided to follow him.

Lucas and Julie will surely tell me that I'm stupid.

I followed the bird for a couple of minutes, before he stopped.

Chirp! Chirp!

"We arrived?"

The bird nodded, then he flew away leaving the place. I laughed watching him going away.

"What a strange encounter"

Then I looked ahead of me, it was a place in ruins, it resembled a shopping mall, although now completely open and green, I entered it and started wandering through the countless long gone stores.

As I was moving I started hearing the sound of water running through, but I couldn't see from where, so I followed the sound and ended up in a more dark section of the shopping, where light only came from a hole on the ceiling.

The place was dark and there was a fountain in the middle, and in the fountain, controlling the water and dancing, was Emily.

She was dancing together with water jets that she's controlling, the water following her every move. She danced to her heart's content, as if she were a saint.

Her eyes snapped open once I started clapping to her performance.

"Liam?" Finally noticing my presence she said.

"Hello, how are you doing?"

"When did you arrive?"

"Just got here, I was watching you. You are very good"

"That's a little embarrassing, but thank you"

I smiled, "There's no need to be, you were incredible"

"Thank you, by the way, have you found anyone yet?"

I shook my head, "You're the first one I found, I lost myself in fact"

She laughed at that, "That seems like you, I was trying to look for people, but I found this place and decided to rest for a bit"

"I see"

I glanced towards her, and analyzed her before asking, "Which team are you on?"

She seemed surprised with my question for a second, then she smiled, "Do you want to know?"

"Yes"

"And what if we are not on the same team?" She asked.

I laughed trying to easy up the tension, but I knew I could not, after all I didn't wanted to, "I guess we will fight then"

I want to fight her, she's strong, I know that, I want to see it for myself once, how strong she is.

The atmosphere was tense, and I was tense. I prepared myself for any kind of attack coming from her, but she only laughed.

"I'm with the Sky people," she answered.

My eyes widened and suddenly the atmosphere melted, and I laughed disappointedly.

"I see, I'm as well with the Sky people"

"You seem disappointed, did you want to fight?"

"I would be lying if I said no"

She sighed, "You and Lucas are the same, two addicted to battle"

Suddenly another voice startled both of us, "Who are you calling an addict?"

Lucas said, appearing from the same entrance as I came from, I saw him and smiled.

"Hey, how are you doing?"

"Not good, I've found some beats on the way here, they were weak but there were a lot, it was annoying"

I laughed at his comment, "At least you found anything, besides Emily I haven't found a single thing in this place"

"It's probably because night is coming, a lot of monsters are appearing out of nowhere, I was looking for a place to rest, then I found you two"

Then Emily asked, "Did you find anyone else?"

He shook his head, "Only you two"

"Strange, why did they create two groups for a competition-type exam, but didn't put us near each other?" Emily asked.

"They want to test our survival skills?" I said.

"No, if it were like that, there wouldn't be pre-existent teams; we would be thrown into this world and form our own alliances and teams" Lucas answered.

After his comment we spent a few minutes trying to think of an answer, but we failed.

"Let's leave this place and find our group, teacher Selina said that we need to help our team"

They both agreed with me, and then we left the shopping, where we saw that the night had come.

The scenario was incredibly beautiful due to the lack of humans, the destroyed cities, and the absence of lights in the buildings. The sky was filled with stars, and I could see the full moon on the horizon perfectly.

"That's beautiful," Emily commented.

"Indeed," I answered.

I thought that Lucas was commenting something along those lines, but instead he said, "Hey, what's that?"

He pointed towards a cliff far away, and there was something on that cliff. It would be impossible to see if it was a person or not from this distance because a person would appear too small to discern. However, whatever was there, it was not a person."

It's a monster.

It's big, immense, it's already big from this distance, I can't imagine how big it is in front of me.

The creature then howled towards the moon, and jumped from the cliff.

"Is that…?" Lucas didn't finish.

I didn't know what he was talking about, but Emily did.

"The Night Wolf, a grade 5 monster"
