Chapter 42: 1000
My eyes snapped open and I immediately got up, looking at my surroundings I remembered that I had slept in a junkyard.
"Have you finally woken up?" I heard Iske's voice.
Glancing to my side I saw him approaching me, "Why didn't you wake me up?"
"I tried," I couldn't tell if he was lying or not, "And besides, It's better if I'm the one keeping watch"
"Why?"
"Because you're weak"
Ouch, but I guess he's telling the truth, I'm weak… I never felt more useless in my entire life.
"We need to leave this place soon," Iske said.
"Why though?"
"Monsters came here, just weak beasts, but eventually more and more will appear"
I see, the conversation ended there. I approached the bonfire and put out the fire, then I left my very well built little cave, and followed Iske's steps, as I found him I saw his back, and also saw something that I didn't notice before.
There are some cuts on his battle suit, and it's also dirty with his blood.
"What happened to you?" I asked.
"I said before, some monsters"
I decided to ignore since he didn't want to tell me, and his injuries seem superficial as well, so I bet he's fine, he already fought with a basilisk, a few beats means nothing to him.
While we were leaving the place, I asked, "Where are we going?"
"We are going to find the Sky people"
The Sky people?
"Aren't you from the Ground folk"
"Yes, I'll leave you there and find my own way towards the Ground folk"
I see, "You truly are a good friend, even though a little rude"
"I'm not your friend"
"Keep telling yourself that"
While we were climbing a few destroyed buildings, I decided to glance back towards the junkyard, there, from above I saw countless corpses of monsters lying on the ground while others were forming small piles.
20, no, 30, at least 30, he fought all of them?
I turned my eyes to Iske, and he was as well staring at me, and before I could say anything, he told me, "Give me your points"
"What?"
"Give me your points"
I was dumbstruck, and asked once more, "What?"
"Don't be stupid, and just give me your points"
"I knew you weren't helping me out of goodwill"
He clicked his tongue, "No one helps others out of goodwill, and I need your points"
I gave up, I knew I couldn't win against him anyway, at least he won't eliminate me from the exam, "How do I give you my points"
He then grabbed my visor out of my wrist, "This is enough"
He messed with my visor for some seconds, and then gave it back to me, and there I saw the new ranking.

There are some changes, this guy Samuel wasn't here before, Aaron climbed some ranks, and others acquired a few points, while I'm not in second place anymore.
Accepting that I would return to be a failure once again, I said, "I didn't know we could hand over our points"
"Yeah"
He didn't say anything further, and we started walking again. I was following him, he seemed to know where he's going, I was behind him quietly, just looking at the surroundings.
Then once again I stared at his injuries, "Doesn't that hurt?"
"No"
"I could made a healing potion, if you give me time"
"It's just a few scratches, don't bother"
The silence returned, but this time I didn't let it last long, "If this is an illusion, why was a monster able to injure you?"
"Probably because of the battle suit, it's probably connected with this world, and is probably the thing connecting us with this world as well"
That makes sense, that's why we feel the passage of time, feel hungry and all that, the battle suit is the thing connecting us with this world, it's like a virtual reality device, but much more advanced because of magic.
"Technology and magic are truly terrifying…" I paused for a second, when a question came to my mind, "Wait, if the battle suit is connecting us with this world, and permits us to feel hungry, pain and other things, what happens if we die?"
I never thought of that before, because I just thought this was a normal school exam, and I'm probably overthinking.
Right?
"What would happen if your body thinks you are dead?" he asked me.
"I dunno, I would probably go into a coma, I think"
I already died in virtual reality games, but something like that never happened before.
"Video games are different, in a video game we can't tell the differences between the virtual world and the real world, but what about this world, would you know it was an illusion if I didn't tell you?"
I probably wouldn't have noticed it, at first I thought they created a whole apocalyptic world and threw us in here.
"Then what happens if I die here?"
"There are many answers, none of them are comforting"
Before I could continue with my questions, Iske suddenly stopped and raised his arm, stopping me as well.
"What happened?"
He didn't even answer me, and everything after that happened too fast. All of a sudden I saw an arrow coming straight at my face, I was able to dodge it by moving my head to the side.
But in the same moment three figures appeared from the building's wreckage and attacked Iske. I tried helping him, but I felt a sharp object on my neck, I glanced back and saw Aaron staring at me.
Iske quickly stopped resisting after seeing that Aaron had a sword pointing towards my neck.
"Hello Iske, how about you give me your 1000 points?"
