Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Nice to meet you
It's been two weeks, and Onika hasn't gotten any feedback from the hotel. She was scared that maybe someone else also called in and was offered the position or maybe they didn't like her at all for the position.
Onika was lost in thoughts, she had high hopes for the job and had already laid plans for what she was going to do with her salaries. Susan and her parents noticed her behavior and how she was handling the situation, they wanted to help her but didn't know how to, so they just gave her space while praying she gets the job.
"Hey boo, how are you holding up? ", Susan asked.
"They still haven't sent me a response suzie, I'm worried. I don't think there's any other job i can find that'll pay me 100$ per hour for just serving drinks ", Onika cried.
"Oh onika, I feel how sad you are, everyone can see it, i won't sit here and tell you how to react to all these, but one thing i'll tell you is to not let this hold you down. ", Susan said.
Onika burst into tears and Susan held her closely while she cried.
"It felt so good crying, I was tired of holding it in. Thank you suzie. ", Onika cried. She wipes her nose and eyes and smiled.
"So we good?", Susan asked
"Yes we are", Onika replied "I think i'm ready to forget about it and continue my search".
Just after she decided to move on, her phone beeps as she received a notification. She checked her phone and saw that she was sent an email from "Don prism hotel", The one she had applied for. Just when she accepted her fate that she wasn't going to get it, she suddenly receives a mail approving her application and requesting for immediate resumption.
"What does it say Onika? ", Susan asked.
"It was approved, I got the job suzie. Plus they want me to start right away, so that means I have to travel!! ". Onika exclaimed
"I'm going to Manhattan suzie ".
Susan and Onika both jumped and screamed for joy that made Susans' parents rush upstairs to their room to check if something was wrong.
"Approved, the application was approved", they both said.
The whole family was so happy, Susan's dad took them out for pizza to celebrate. After their mini celebration, Onika knew it was time for her to start packing her bags in preparation to leave.
The next day, she bid farewell to Susan and her family as her taxi drives off. Onika was so excited about her journey, she kept practicing her speech just incase she's been called for an interview. She was a hundred percent ready to start her job.
She arrives at the location given to her, she stood in front of huge building complex confused on if she was in the right place or if they got the address mixed up. Suddenly, a lady approaches her.
"Hi, I'm katherine, I guess you're Onika. The new waitress ", Katherine shakes Onika. "You're obviously confused, I know, I was on my first day. This building is only for the waitresses working in the hotel, we all have our own apartment, but there are rules ".
"Rules?? ", Onika asked.
"Yes rules, but don't worry, you'll find out soon enough about what i'm talking about ", Katherine said as she helps Onika with her bag and directs her into the building complex as they walk to the elevator.
"You've been assigned apartment 21, the girl who lived there was well, let's just say she doesn't work for the hotel anymore ", Katherine said as she walks Onika down to her apartment door.
"Thank you so much Katherine, I really appreciate it ", Onika smiled.
"You're welcome, get settled, tomorrow we resume. We work the same shifts ", Katherine said as she walks away.
Onika opened her apartment door and was dumbfounded, it was more beautiful and cozy than she expected. She couldn't have imagined that these type of amenities would be offered to the workers in a hotel, any hotel for that matter. She was curious as to why these things were offered to them but at the same time, she was so grateful because she knew she was saving up more by not paying rent.
It was a new day and Onika was already dressed up and waiting for Katherine to ring her up. Her door bell rings and she immediately came out the door, there stood Katherine all dressed and ready for work.
"Are you ready for your first day on the job? ", Katherine asked.
"I'm excited ", Onika answered.
They were also accompanied with other ladies working that shift. A vehicle was already at the entrance waiting for all the ladies. Katherine and Onika got into the vehicle, and took their seats. After all the ladies has settled down, the doors were shut and they made their way to the hotel.
Don prism hotel is a one hundred and fifty three meter tall building, with the interiors giving off a dark and mysterious yet luxurious aura. It was so beautiful to behold as Onika froze at the sight of it.
"What are you doing? ", Katherine asked. "We have a lot of work to do, there are a lot of VIP guests coming here today and we need to be working, come on". She pulls Onika into the lounge with her as they start arranging and preparing the lounge for the VIP guests.
Suddenly some cars got to the entrance of the hotel, and when the first person came out, there was sudden calmness in the environment. Everywhere became calm and quiet, people who weren't where they were supposed to be quietly left and went back to their stations.
The lounge doors were open and a group of men walked it, they were all dressed in black suits with no expression on their faces. They walked to the tables like they knew which tables were assigned to them, after everyone got to their table. They all stood still, the halls were eerily quiet this time. Only the sound of a strong and steady footstep could be heard.
A man walks into the lounge and the men who stood at the door closed it immediately he got inside, he walked down to a table and sat down. After he was comfortable, the other men who stood behind their table took their seats. Suddenly, the halls were busy once more, music started playing in the lounge as drinks were shared amongst the men in the lounge.
"Basically, all you have to do is pour drinks into their cups, smile, be pretty and walk away. You are not allowed to be in their midst for more than 20 seconds, do you hear me? ", Katherine ordered.
"Yes, loud and clear ", Onika replied.
Katherine leads the other girls to the lounge, while onika was carrying her bottle of champagne to the tables, she had forgotten what exact table needed that particular drink. Unaware of who was who in the lounge, she unintentionally walks towards main table.
While trembling in anxiety, she mistakenly spills the drink on the body of the man seated at the table and everyone gasped.
"Oh my goodness, I'm sorry. That was so stupid of me, please forgive me, I will clean this mess immediately ", She said while trying to clean the spill with her napkins.
Suddenly some men dressed in suits who felt like guards rushed to Onika and pulls her aside. But the man stops them as he stands up from his table.
"Quickly ", he flicked his fingers, "Get me a new suit ".
As some men left to get a new clean suit for him, he approaches Onika.
"I don't think we've met before, are you new here? ", he asked.
"Ye- yes, uhn i mean no, no we haven't sir. ", Onika replied shakingly. "It's my first day on the job sir"
"Then allow me to properly introduce myself. I am Brandon, Brandon Crest. I am the final boss of this establishment and you young lady, you work for me " he smirked as he walks back to his table with his new arrived suit.
Katherine comes up and pulls Onika who had already frozen in fear out of the premises.
"You were lucky, but don't mess up like this next time. Your luck might just run out ", Katherine said to Onika who was still trying to regain herself.
"I've got to be more serious with this ", she whispered to herself as she continues with her duties.
