Chapter 40: CH-38 Attack[1]

I splashed water onto her face, while also brushing my teeth as I oral hygiene conversation with Harriet, my chatty chum.

[Master, are you sure you want to stay yourself away from her? Might it not be better to date Amelia instead?]

"..." I spat out the toothpaste from my mouth, and then rinsed my mouth with water. After removing all of my clothes and entering the bathtub, I closed my eyes to relax myself in the water.

A crush is merely a simple physical attraction... if it fades over time, I simply do not desire a romantic correspondence.

"Dating someone is a pain in the ass… If over time, they break your heart or end the relationship."

I still vividly recall the day when my lovely person, my mom, died because she did not have enough of the talent to become cultivators, comparable to mine.

She died due to old age. Haaa...For a few years, I was even unable to breathe normally, let alone sleep properly.

Every night I wake up at 3 Am because of the nightmares she leaves on me, of her love feelings.

Every single second of living was the worst hell for me because my family meant everything. Although I had only a single mother to raise me, there was none except her, she was my entire world.

If affection inflicts such anguish upon the departure of those paramount in my existence, I shall eschew its chances.

In a previous chapter of my life, I had an ephemeral infatuation, which swiftly dissipated once I situated my attention elsewhere.

Rather, a progeny would be preferable, an offspring whom I could mold as an extension of myself, lavishing affection upon them, secure in the knowledge that their devotion shall remain unwavering.

'The adoration of a child kneels all other forms of ardor.' I dismounted from my porcelain water chalice and proceeded to adorn my bodily vestments anew.

As for my current academic garb, I had been besmirched by the day's toils and travels.

Fortunately, I possessed an auxiliary set of scholarly robes, a prudent precaution indeed.

[Your wits have wandered into the brambles!] Harriet jeered in mock reproach, for some reasons inscrutable.

"Aha, so you admit it!" I retorted, upon exiting the chamber and espying a parchment perched expectantly upon an untenanted bedchamber.

I made forthwith to grab the note and regale the words expressed.

"By my troth, I may know what transgressions have occurred that make you sad! But I entreat you, Amelia will be a dependable lover, because I will incredibly pursue your love until you are slaved by me."

"... Though the true depths of my own emotions are… muddied. But I cannot abide you being courted by another person, be their curtain or plume. If this is the stuff of love itself, then upon discovering its mysteries, I will confess it… until then, please be my best friend!"

"..." I was speechless, struck dumb by the missive's contents. Truly, Amelia didn't give me cold shoulder designs, her motivation was insane by this beautiful visage.

Hence, her previous rebuffs masked deeper longings - to be my lover, not mere platonic companion, like her words.

Legend speak true, those legendary bards - the tongue is forever tattling on the heart's deepest secrets. Do mine ears detect the faint strains of dance practice on the horizon?

"Maybe a grand opportunity presents itself for us to understand each other…" I shall lavish her dearest bosom companion instead!

Let me woo and coo over this cherished bestie and see if jealousy's green flames kindle in my would-be inamorata's breast.

Even if the fates gauge us naught but chums eternal, at the very least I can escape unduly bruising the peach that will be left in our heart.

A few days ago, the day of dance arrived, where Amelia and I were about to dance. It was night outside the window. I wore my long red dress given by Amelia as a gift partner in dance.

It is made of white fabric, possibly silk or a similar lightweight material, that drapes elegantly around my figure.

The dress features billowing sleeves that past the wrists, bodice is fitted and accentuates the figure, with a ribbon or sash tied at my waist, creating a slimming effect.

It has mingled designs in a Gothic or Victorian style, with its high neckline and embellishments indicated of that kind era.

"Are you ready?" Amelia, wearing a dress almost similar to mine, extended her hand toward me as We stood outside the palace-like house.

"Yup!" I held her hand, and we walked inside. In the meantime, me and Amelia were getting a bit-

—ahem!

-friendly… If you know what I'm talking about.

… Wait, no, not like that! We didn't go all flirty-flirty or anything while keeping things PG, scout's honor!

But we may have gotten just a tiny bit closer than usual platonic friend territory permits.

Amelia was really trying to act all grown-up and mature about it though. Can't say I was being much better… We had been joint-at-the-hip buddies for like 20 hours straight over the last couple days.

Speaking of those two days, I also snuck out to the woods to hunt down some monsters; To chart some exp to level up to that next sweet, sweet power plateau.

Because of this Deadnova organization tip I got from my girl Zeno was seriously very juicy.

Your Iris, The goddess of destruction, is basically a total badass fusion realm expert already, maxed out at Stage 8!

The pinnacle of power, baby, ahhhh… Ahem!

"You are here, my dear little ducklings!" Gwen greeted us in an overly playful tone.

We sidled up next to her at what was currently a discotheque disguised as a dance party.

"Ducklings? When did I sign up to be your baby bird brigade?" I quirked my eyebrow at her, snatching a glass of wine from a passing waiter.

"Oh you'll be joining the flock soon enough!" Gwen puffed out her chest with misplaced confidence. Amelia bypassed the wine…. in favor of a nice frosty brewski.

I licked my lips after knocking back that first glass of vino like a frat boy, eyeing the waiter pushing the drink cart. "Yo, wine guy! Hit me again!"

But just as I went to have a refill, someone batted my hand. "Iris Hope, didn't I tell you to lay off the sauce?"

I rolled my eyes. "Oh mommmm, you're no fun!"
