Conversational Punctuation Rules
These guidelines are a breakdown of how dialogue is formatted and presented within the author's writing style:
1. " ... ": This format is employed when characters speak audibly or converse with others. It's the standard convention for dialogue.
2. ' ... ': When a character is speaking to themselves, reflecting on their thoughts, or engaging in inner dialogue, single quotation marks are used. This signifies that the dialogue is internalized and not spoken aloud.
3. [" ... "]: Dialogue enclosed within square brackets typically indicates conversations or comments made by people surrounding the main character. It implies a conversation happening around the character rather than directly involving them.
4. [ ... ]: When technology serves as the medium for conversation, such as through text messages, emails, or other electronic communication, the dialogue is presented within square brackets. This format distinguishes it from direct spoken dialogue.
5. ( ... ): Parentheses are utilized when non-human entities or robots are conversing. This could include animals, AI, or other non-human entities capable of communicating within the narrative.
6. Italicized conversation "...": When conversations occur in the past, typically in flashbacks or reminiscences, they are presented in italics. This formatting visually separates the past dialogue from the present narrative, providing clarity to the reader.
