Chapter 20: Catching up

Waking from my slumber I felt the cold mountain breeze on my scales, the light wind sweeping through the mountain peaks caught the low hanging clouds as it went along. Causing a fog to envelop my area of rest.

Quickly stretching I worked out the stiffness from sleep, then took flight and headed towards the volcano in the distance. It was just as I remembered, ask falling on the landscape around the volcano for miles covering everything and turning it black.

The only light that made its way to the surface was the dull glow of the rivers of lava that flowed about.

With each beat of my wing the ash clouds swirled behind me as I quickly closed in on the open mouth of the volcano. Upon reaching my destination I dove into the opening, then unfurled my wings as I approached the ground. Making sure to flap my now mighty wings as I approached the ground so as to not slam straight into it as I did on my first flight.

Landing with a dull thud I looked around observing my surroundings, as I looked to my left I caught sight of grandfathers massive figure. Even though I had grown leaps and bounds he still towered over me.

"So you have returned. Your Mother and sisters have been worried, go speak to them." Grandfather said while he seemed to be looking into my very soul.

I quickly bowed then made my way to the tunnel that led to the cave my sister where most likely in. As I walked in the tunnel it seemed that not only had I grown in size but also perception. I could not see the living mana that flowed about this area.

As one could assume since it was a volcano fire and earth mana was so abundant that all others where almost pushed out completely. I could also see that the crystals that lined the ceiling of the cavern where actively absorbing mana to generate light. Something I hadn't been able to see before.

'Maybe I can see mana so clearly now as I spent so much time in that forest that was soaked in it.'

After walking for a time I finally caught sight of the caves entrance and walked inside. As soon as I entered my sisters jumped up from their resting place in the corner and ran to my side.

"Brother! Where have you been?! we where worried sick!" Apollonia said to me with Corentine adding "Never leave us like that again. I know you where mad but we are supposed to be a team."

Suppressing my initial shock of Corentine's reprimand I responded "Indeed sisters I have returned and I promise that if I decide to leave again I will take you both with me. After all family should stick together."

"By the way where is mother? I have some questions for her." I said after a pause.

"She went to patrol the mountains for any sign of your return she should be back in a few days." Apollonia responded.

I nodded then made my way over to the side of the cave that my sisters had been resting in. As they followed me I looked back noticing that they too had grow over the last few months. Though not as much as myself, I would say that they still where both about 2/3 my size.

"Brother what did you do while you where gone?" Apollonia asked.

As I laid down I told them of how I had trained in the forest to the north next to the shimmering lake as I contemplated how to grow stronger for the sake of my fathers betrayal. Every so often as I explained how I defeated certain monsters Apollonia would ask questions. Such as how I found its weak point or how I managed to kill it, always trying to gleam as much information as possible from my tale. Corentine on the other hand seemed to be absorbing each and every word as though she could understand my meaning with just hearing it once.

As the hours went by I detailed each and every one of my kills, at Apollonias request of course. I guess she thought that even though they where not there themselves they could still learn as much as possible from my stories. So I happily indulged them until I began to grow tired and decided to go to sleep.

'I guess that Mother and Grandmother wont return today, hopefully they return soon I have many questions for them and grandfather.'

As my eyes closed and I drifted off to sleep the only thing on my mind was, how should I go about getting stronger. Strong enough to right every wrong every done to my blood line.

When I woke up the first thing that met my eyes was Grandmother staring straight at me from across the cave. I could feel the anger wafting off of her, once she saw that I had woken up she spoke.

"You foolish child. Do you have any idea what you have done?"

'What in the world could she be talking about, all I did was leave for a few months.'

"You where meant to be learning from myself and your Grandfather all this time but instead you decided to through your little tantrum. Your first trial is in a week, you best be ready or I will kill you myself." Grandmother said before leaving the cave with me standing in shock.

'what is the trial and how could I have screwed up so royally that I pissed off Grandmother?'

N/A (I realize that as this is the 20th chapter I said that it would be double the normal length but I decided to make that next chapter as I felt it would break up better that way)
