Chapter 10: Healing Ability

Kiaan looked up, seeing Viren surrounded by zombies on his left, right, and front. "This is the only way," he said as he threw the sword, aiming for the zombie's neck to Viren's left.

The sword hit the exact area Kiaan was aiming for, but it lacked the force to pierce through the bones of the infected.

Viren saw the sword coming and sticking in the infected's neck, and without saying a word, he yanked it free, slicing the zombie's head clean off.

Viren was now in focus mode; the only thing he knew was to fight.

The warden swung the sword with full force and effortlessly bisected the other approaching zombie in two halves, from top to bottom.

Now, two infected remained, and they both were moving towards the terrified students.

Meanwhile, one lay on its back motionless in front of Viren. "Is he dead? Screw it, kids first," he thought, leaping towards the zombies with his sword.

The panicked students were pushing each other and crying as they saw the zombies' red eyes and heard their angry growls. To top it off, blood dripping from both of their mouths made the kids even more scared.

"No, I don't want to be eaten!" A kid yelled while crying and running.

Viren had sliced the neck of a zombie closer to him; now, only one infected was left, who was close to the kids.

But before this last infected could hurt any student, Viren grabbed its hair and dragged it away from the students. "You crack-holes are a pain in my crack!" he yelled while stomping on the head of the last remaining zombie, and just like before, brains and blood splashed everywhere.

.....

"Go, go! Inside with the other students, hurry!" Anju yelled, gesturing towards Jerry and handing her rifle to Kiaan. "As much as I hate it, he's better at shooting than me," Anju thought.

Kiaan was so busy observing the zombie that he didn't notice when he took the rifle from Anju and held it with both hands. "This is unheard of," Kiaan thought. "I've seen so many movies and played countless video games, but I've never seen anything like this."

"Kiaan, are you waiting for Diwali before killing it? Should we go shop for some firecrackers and sweets?" Anju loudly taunted Kiaan, which made him realize that he now had a gun in his hand.

"Sorry, ma'am," Kiaan replied while aiming the rifle at the center of the zombie's eyes. He was still lost in thought, but his body followed Anju's orders, and he took the shot.

Kiaan was a master at shooting, but due to the gun's aim not being set as per his requirements, he missed the head completely.

However, the shot hit the zombie in the neck, piercing through its spinal cord, which was enough to kill it.

"I didn't know you could be of some use," a voice interrupted from behind. It was Kabir, with Sarah, Maya, Jai, Rahul, and 17 other students.

"You're supposed to be the best shot, yet you definitely missed the head, hippo?" Jai taunted Kiaan.

"Enough!" Anju commanded. "Class 11! Get the injured students to the infirmary, leave the intruders, and lock the doors from inside until further orders!"

All 17 students, holding air rifles, responded in unison with a salute and "Yes, ma'am!"

.....

As the students were busy gathering all the bodies or whatever was left of the poor kids, Kiaan managed to pull one of the boys aside and whispered in his ear, "Be careful; they might turn into zombies. Warn your friends as well, and lock Jerry, Jhanvi, and all her friends in one room."

That boy was the one whom Kiaan saw talking with Jhanvi at the lovers' point of the campus. His name was Hanu, a slightly tall guy with brown skin, curly hair, and hazel eyes. And he had blood over his hand.

Hanu nodded at Kiaan's order and got back to his task. "If it wasn't for your sister, you wouldn't even care," he mumbled while gritting his teeth.

All these students were afraid as they all knew what a zombie is. They were picking up the kids as if they were some kind of garbage, keeping them away from their bodies and making sure that these kids wouldn't be able to bite them if they turned.

They didn't even want to touch these poor kids for fear of becoming zombies themselves. But who had the courage to question Anju? They just complied with the order and picked up the kids while making faces of disgust and being afraid.

"Ask Diya, ma'am, to check them and lock all of them inside the infirmary immediately," Viren ordered as he approached them. Soon his face turned from exhausted to anger, and he shouted, "HOLD THEM WITH RESPECT; THEY ARE YOUR FRIENDS!"

And if that was not enough to scare them, Viren's eyes and the way he looked were enough to make them pee in their pants.

His shirt was soaked in blood from the wound on his shoulder, and his right foot had some brain flesh and blood.

He was looking toward the Vice Head Boy, Kartik, a handsome teen with dark, gelled hair and an athletic physique. Kartik was now shaking as he held a girl on his shoulder, adjusted her, and grabbed her in both his arms, while the girl's hands dangled in the air and her head rested right above Kartik's heart. "Sorry, sir," he said.

Following their head boy and being scared of Viren's anger, they all followed his action.

"Also, make sure every student goes inside their rooms. No one is allowed to be in the corridors except for you seventeen," Viren continued with his orders. "You have to make sure that there is complete decency."

Kartik slightly nodded and replied, "Yes, sir." He was still scared but held a calm and brave face. And as soon as Viren turned back to look at the group of class 12, Kartik and the rest of the kids moved, but holding a face of disgust.

Jai was observing the pile of three dead zombies; he too was shocked and said the same thing that Kiaan thought: "I have never seen anything like this in any movie."

"Kids, we still have one lingering around," Viren yelled, pointing toward the zombie he punched and left alive to aid students earlier, getting the attention of everyone around the pile.

The infected got up by putting both his hands on the ground while making growling sounds.

"Shoot it, Kiaan," Viren made it sound as if it was nothing to kill a person. "Yes, sir," Kiaan replied calmly as if it was indeed nothing to kill a person, still lost in his thoughts.

Kiaan was observing the zombie while slowly raising the gun to see if anything was unusual about these beasts from the movie. That's when Kiaan noticed that the zombie was neither attacking nor angry; it was just simply standing there, curling its back a bit and staring into nothingness.

"Just shoot or I'll tie those necks around your arm!!!" Anju yelled, taunting Kiaan again as she saw Kiaan taking a long time. Her comment made the infected look toward the group and Kiaan.

"I still was not able to set the aim mechanism, but maybe an inch toward the right would be fine," Kiaan thought, ignoring Anju's comment.

And then Kiaan took the shot at the right time; the zombie moved its head intentionally, avoiding the line of fire.

This stunned everyone there except Anju, Kabir, and Maya. As these three didn't know what a zombie was. Viren also didn't know, but fighting them, he had realized that this was not something these infected were capable of.

Kabir let out a scoff. "Useless as ever, I see," he said at the exact moment the zombie let out a loud scream toward the group, sending shivers down nearly all of their spines except for both wardens.

Kabir gripped the mace in his hand and thought, "That actually scared me. Interesting." He had a menacing smile on his face. "I got this, sir. Don't worry," he said as he charged toward the infected with the mace by his side and a grin on his face.

"I'll rip that head off your body!" Kabir shouted as he swung the mace at the head of the infected to kill it. But the zombie blocked the attack using both its arms to cover its head. The force sent the zombie a few feet back, stumbling and falling to the ground.

The infected got up, his hands dangling as the bones of his forearms were shattered and flesh was squashed. They were so damaged that some bone fragments could be seen piercing the skin and protruding from his hand.

The zombie, again behaving abnormally, looked at his hand and raised it in front of him. This shocked everyone around, even Anju, since Kabir's speed was incredible with a mace. "I didn't expect you to block," Kabir said in slight disbelief. "Well, second try." Kabir said as he took the stance to charge again.

But stopped as he saw the Zombie making fists with both hands as if he was checking his reflexes. "A moment ago, I broke his arm; they should not be functional." Indeed, they should not be, but somehow the zombie didn't have any problems. This shocked everyone because this was not possible for any human. "It seems as if he healed himself." Kiaan commented, getting the attention of Kabir and distracting him from the target."

Kabir turned his head toward Kiaan and taunted, "Yes.... yes, he healed himself. He is not a human but a cartoon, like your Spiderman." Kabir was annoyed to his limit now. That's when he heard loud footsteps approaching from the zombie. His eyes widened as he realized his mistake. But it was too late; he knew that his fate would be like that of the other students.
