Chapter 4: Live Again / Being Grateful
His parents in the original world died when he was about to turn 10 from a sudden car crash. You might have thought it was supposed to be painful. As it turned out, it was, but it was as if he had hardly seen his parents much in the first place. His dad had already died from construction work, and he loved his mom, who died from a car crash that year.
He remembered how he was holding the photo of his mother at the funeral, while he wore the appropriate formal wear. There were no relatives who came to visit, nor any family members. It was just him and the empty room, crying, but not as if anybody would be there to hear.
Surprisingly, he got over the sobbing and tears pretty quickly. The pain of losing someone doesn't go away that quickly. You still pick yourself up. Fortunately, his mother had left him enough insurance to pay his way through his early adulthood.
Sometimes, during those moments of loneliness that gripped him, he would happen to stare out at the apartment balcony's sliding glass door at the falling sunset. It looked pink on those lonely and desolate days. It was beautiful in a sad way, as he leaned against the wall, smiling in a self-deprecating manner.
"Starting lottery draw…" the system announced.
He couldn't quite recognize the words that were on the lottery draw; they looked quite like inscriptions, and as he focused a bit more, his eyes saw the words. They no longer appeared so hazy, unlike before. It was as if the fog had lifted.
These were some of the things that appeared in the vast array of available draws, much to his shock as he watched the wheel continue spinning:
Divine Eternal Healing (S): A supreme healing ability that can mend any wound or ailment, restoring the user to perfect health instantly. It may also grant temporary immunity to further damage.
Black Flame (A): A rare and powerful ability that summons dark flames capable of burning through almost anything. The flames are difficult to extinguish and can even consume other magical energies.
Lightning Speed (SS): Grants the user incredible swiftness, allowing them to move and react at speeds that surpass the natural limits of living beings. This speed can create afterimages and even allow the user to evade eyesight.
Knowledge of a Professional Engineer (B): Bestows comprehensive knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, enabling the user to invent, repair, or improve complex machinery with ease.
Perfect Memory (A): The user can recall any memory with flawless accuracy, never forgetting any detail, no matter how small. This includes languages, texts, experiences, and skills learned.
Time Rewind (SSS): Allows the user to reverse time by a few seconds or minutes, enabling them to undo recent events and make different choices. This ability is often limited by cooldowns or energy costs due to its potency.
Regeneration from a Drop (SSS): An advanced regenerative power where the user can heal from any injury, no matter how severe, as long as a single drop of their essence remains.
Sword Demon's Inheritance (SS): The user inherits the skills, techniques, and battle instincts of a legendary sword demon, making them a master of swordsmanship with a vast array of deadly moves.
Knowledge of the Forgotten Era (S): Grants the user access to lost knowledge from ancient times, including forgotten languages, hidden histories, and extinct magical practices.
It wasn't just anything ordinary that he was originally expecting. In fact, all of these were, in his estimate, the 'gifts' of the existing and past players. For example, he quite easily recognized some of them, like the skill Black Flame…
It is an A-level skill that one of the students at his academy during his high school years awakened at his term. That enabled the awakener to be recruited at 17 by a famous guild and ended up being a famous player who raided many B and A rank gates with ease. He also became a centimillionaire by the time he turned 21; that's how much money he managed to rake in.
"System! Stop…dang it! Just passed the Time Rewind ability…"
"No, elemental mastery doesn't sound too bad!"
"Wait! At least give me the alchemy genius abilities…"
Jonathan watched as the wheel kept spinning, bit by bit away from the area that he wanted to land on. It was at that moment that he finally knew the pain of losing in gambling.
The lottery needle finally stopped upon a single item: Observation Eye (A).
"The user's skill level is currently too low to see the full description of this ability. Please continue to improve yourself."
Strangely enough, the other parts of this skill were locked, and he could only see the initial description at the top:
Observation Eye (A) [Unlocked]: Allows the user to see the characteristics/information of other people, the details behind items that are in view, as well as provide other situational insights.
…and that's it.
Jonathan kind of had the feeling inside that he was scammed somehow. But the good thing was that there was a chance that he could upgrade the ability to a higher level. Although, currently, the condition for unlocking it is still 'hidden'.
"Pennyworth."
As he was sitting there contemplating the possibilities of this new 'gift,' he called for the butler to come in.
In his nice tailcoat and silky smooth outfit, the butler entered the room with quite a nice demeanor of calm and collectedness.
"Yes, sir."
He scanned the stat screen that appeared with his newfound skill:

The moment that Jonathan saw the long list of skills that were in his inventory, his jaw dropped. It was simply impossible to state how amazed he was…especially when he himself only had three skill characteristics on his own list. Is this what they call talent?
"If Pennyworth had been born in the modern era, he could most definitely be a high-tiered multi-million dollar CEO or manager of some Fortune 100 company with ease."
