Chapter 16: Finding the dungeon

"Does that mean that the amount of Spiritual Power is the factor that determines whether I can absorb an ability?"

Eric pondered for a moment, considering the importance of Spiritual Power in his ability absorption attempts. After numerous failed attempts, all thwarted by the same problem of insufficient Spiritual Energy, he couldn't help but wonder, "How much spirit do I need to successfully absorb an ability?"

Seeking clarity, he turned to the system for answers, only to be met with a concise explanation:

[To extract an ability from a target, you need to fulfill two conditions:

Your Spiritual Power must exceed 50 points. You must evolve to Rank 1.]

Seeing the conditions set by the system, Eric fell into a thoughtful silence.

"Rank 1? That's tough," he muttered, weighing the implications.

If he continued to increase his level at the same pace as before, it would take him a considerable amount of time to reach rank 1. And he would miss the first big event, which would take place in a month.

"I can't afford that."

He had to attend this event and get the treasure item for himself, as it was one of the important keys for him to evolve into a transcendental being.

"To do that, I need to raise my level and absorb as many abilities as possible."

Even though his draining ability was strong, Eric knew its weakness. It was neither an offensive nor a defensive ability, which meant that in battle, he could only rely on his physical strength.

In order to cover his weakness, he had to absorb the abilities of the monsters he killed.

Just as his mind was racing with plans to raid several unexplored dungeons, angry howls echoed through the forest, snapping him out of his thoughts.

He scanned his surroundings but found no monsters, but he knew they were getting closer as the howling grew louder.

"Damn, I wasted so much time thinking. It's time to get out of here."

Without wasting any time, he grabbed his dagger, put the two corpses in his inventory, and sprinted away in the opposite direction from where the howling was coming from.

"I have to find Levi before it's too late," he thought as he ran between the trees.

As Eric raced through the dense forest, his senses were on high alert, scanning his surroundings. However, as he maneuvered through the trees, he couldn't help but notice that his speed was much faster than usual. He knew this was the effect of increasing his agility, but he was still surprised at how his body was able to adapt to the sudden increase in movement without the need for training.

"A benefit of having a system, I guess."

After a while, Eric stopped and looked around.

"Damn, I'm lost!"

He couldn't find any tracks or bloodstains to follow. His head moved left and right, looking for anything he could use to track Levi.

As he searched, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a ViperWolf munching on a human leg.

The monster seemed to be busy with its meal and hadn't noticed him yet.

Eric frowned at the sight and tried to continue looking for Levi's tracks when he suddenly stopped, an idea popping into his head.

"Yeah, that might work."

Smiling, he ran towards the monster, which seemed to notice him as it raised its head and looked at him with bloodthirsty eyes. But Eric paid no attention, as it was only a level 4 monster.

The ViperWolf dropped the leg it was chewing on and locked eyes with Eric. In an instant, the creature's demeanor changed from contented satisfaction to savage aggression. Without hesitation, it lunged at him, fangs bared and claws extended.

Eric could see the monster's movements clearly, unlike the monsters he had fought before, where he could barely keep up. But he quickly realized that it wasn't the monster in front of him that was slow; rather, he was much faster than before, with almost a ten-level difference between them.

Sidestepping, Eric narrowly avoided the ViperWolf's deadly strike. Then, without hesitation, he slashed its side, drawing a horizontal, bloody line across the monster's body.

The viperwolf let out a painful howl before it looked at Eric with fear and slowly began to retreat. It realized that the prey in front of it wasn't one it could hunt alone.

Seeing the monster retreat, Eric's smile widened. "That's not enough."

He lunged at the monster again, and before it could react, he slashed its other side, drawing another gruesome, bloody line.

The viperwolf howled in pain and no longer hesitated; it turned and fled as fast as it could.

Looking at the fleeing monster, Eric didn't try to kill it, and instead he followed right behind it.

Eric's thoughts were simple. Instead of wasting time looking for Levi, he would use this monster to find the dungeon it spawned from and hopefully meet Levi there.

When the viperwolf noticed Eric right behind its tail, it was horrified and increased its speed despite its injuries, thinking that Eric was going to kill it.

After a while, Eric reached an open clearing and stopped. Directly ahead of him, in the distance, he could see a cave.

"Is the dungeon inside?" he wondered as he watched the creature head straight for the cave, showing no signs of stopping.

Eric watched the viperwolf as it raced toward the cave, but before it entered, an incident occurred. Out of nowhere, a razor-sharp windblade arc shot from the depths of the cave, slicing through the air with deadly precision.

The windblade sliced through the air at an incredible speed and aimed directly at the approaching viperwolf. With a sickening sound, it struck the creature square in the chest, sending it tumbling to the ground in a whirlwind of fur and blood.

For a moment, silence fell over the forest, broken only by the painful howls of the wounded viperwolf. Eric stood rooted to the spot, his eyes fixed on the entrance.

"So you were here..."

As the dust settled, he cautiously approached the wounded viperwolf and noticed a large hole in its chest. The monster continued to shake as blood poured from its body, staining the ground red before it lay lifeless on the ground.

Clenching his dagger, Eric turned his attention to the mouth of the cave, where the windblade arc had originated.

Peering into the darkness of the cave, he heard footsteps before a figure emerged from the entrance. With a sword in his hand, his entire body was covered in blood from head to toe.

A piercing gaze met his eyes.

"Levi!"
