Chapter 15: Triple Green In A Sea Of Grey

'Did she just say knights?' Aurik's confusion continued to intensify with each passing minute and showed no signs of stopping. He had already given up hope of getting all the answers he wanted tonight so in the end he resigned himself to his fate and silently walked into the room.

The room beyond the double doors was massive, easily spanning over 100 meters in any direction, and the ceiling was just as high as Aurik had expected. He felt a little relieved that at least one of his questions was answered, even if it didn't mean anything to have this information.

A red carpet with gold embroidery created a pathway across the room in a straight line with two identical carpets leading to the other entrances on the sides, creating a cross in the centre.

Close to the opposite end of the room, but still a comfortable distance from the wall, a semi circular table stood with 15 seats placed around its arch. The curve was directed towards the room, so that if someone was standing nearby they would be partially surrounded by those seated behind it.

The seats behind the table were made from high quality materials that could have even been used to make a throne several hundred years ago, and just like the carpets, these chairs were fashioned with colours of red and gold.

Three figures were seated behind this table, taking up the positions that would be considered the centre. One of these figures was Horace, a person that allowed Aurik's nerves to calm the moment his face came into view.

'At least I know one of these important looking people...' Aurik scanned the two people who were seated on either side of Horace as he silently thanked the man for not abandoning him amongst a room of strangers.

Seated to the left of Horace was a seemingly middle aged woman with green eyes. Her Auburn coloured hair was tied up in a neat bun and she wore a long emerald coloured dress that reached down to her ankles.

She was an attractive woman and many eyes would have been drawn to her face if she stood in a crowded room but there was something far more distracting about her appearance.

Her dress was being pressed away from her body slightly by something beneath but because the dress wasn't particularly tight it was hard to even notice that something was strange. The only area that it was truly visible was around her chest, where thin lines were seen pressing through on top of, and around, her breasts.

She had several pieces of jewellery adorning her body, from earrings and necklaces to rings and bracelets, even her hair bun had a stick like object piercing through it from top to bottom as though it were holding the hair in place.

Wearing so much jewellery wasn't exactly uncommon for people who could afford to do so but Aurik noticed that every single one of the pieces of her jewellery on her body were extremely plain and basic, and they all seemed to be made from the same white rock like substance.

To the right of Horace was a man that seemed to be the perfect opposite to the red haired woman in that he had nothing significant to be noticed. He appeared to be an elderly man nearing the age of 70 and just like the others beside him his eyes were green.

His shoulder length hair was a light grey colour and seemed to be on it's way to turning white, the same was true for his beard which was dangling loosely over his chest. He wore simple grey robes that covered his entire body and made him look like some kind of monk or hermit.

'If his robes weren't so clean and clearly expensive I would have thought he was a beggar that snuck in. Also, both of them have green eyes... they're the first I've seen who didn't have grey eyes, aside from Horace.' Aurik finally arrived in front of the table as these thoughts crossed his mind and stopped a few meters away. After a minute or two of silence, The woman with auburn hair finally spoke.

"So, this is the man who killed the criminal?"

"That's right." Horace replied. "He killed a soldier on his own while still a human, how many could say the same?"

The old man let out a low grumble and stroked his beard. "So what? A soldier can be killed by most human weapons..." The old man's words showed just how unimpressed he was.

"True, but he killed him with his teeth." Horace pointed at his own mouth and smiled. "While still a human, he bit into a vampire and ripped out his throat, isn't that amazing?"

"Hmph! Let's just get on with it already." The old man waved his had impatiently and the young woman with grey eyes that told Aurik to enter the room suddenly appeared from somewhere on the side.

She was a carrying a silver tray with three transparent glass bowls on top as she approached the three figures behind the table. She approached from the same side of the table that Aurik was standing on and placed a bowl in front of each of the green eyed figures before she sank as far to the side as possible before the table restricted her movements.

Horace and the two beside him pulled out a small dagger that each of them had been hiding somewhere on their person and proceeded to cut open their palms with the blades.

A flash of panic spread through Aurik's body as he remembered what happened the last time someone cut their hand in front of him. Attacking the people in this room would be a disaster that he doubted he could ever recover from if he managed to live through the experience.

However, as each of the three figures held their hands over the glass bowls and allowed their blood to drip, Aurik felt no desire to taste their blood. On the contrary, as he imagined drinking their blood a sense of disgust washed over him and he began to feel nauseous.

"Aurik." Horace suddenly spoke, drawing Aurik's eyes towards his own. "Do you remember when I told you that not all vampires have the same abilities?"

"Yes, I do..."

"Good. Then, it's time we find out which abilities you received."
