Chapter 24: A Special Meeting (3)

The next day, everyone gathered at the gates of the third warehouse, and everyone was certainly confused.

"How much longer do we have to wait? Houses aren't going to build themselves; we have a record of three houses a day."

"Just wait, Daniel. Things won't change if we rush the process that's happening here."

Stuart looked at the wealthy men who were funding many of the things he had requested, like cargo helicopters, machine guns, and an ammunition-making machine. The gunpowder was special, but so was the transportation, which is why he had requested many more things that had arrived a few days ago.

Undoubtedly, whoever is pulling the strings in this place knows that in a catastrophic moment where even the country will take time to send in the army, no one will be safe. Everyone will try to escape the cities and migrate to Mexico or Canada, and that will make things very complicated.

But Stuart had seen that the location where they were was perfect because they were on the top of a not-so-high hill but with enough vision to know who was entering this place. They also had a direct path to a village near the sea, where, by the way, they were trying to establish a small base for future expansion.

The man's simulation of this place ensures that the world is going to hell, the army will be useless, which Stuart doesn't believe, and no country will find the cure.

But it was still too early to draw conclusions; that's what Stuart knows, and now what they were about to see would give them a clear vision of the future that awaits them all.

At that moment, everyone from the base was present, except for unwanted personnel like children, the elderly, and women who only worked in less specialized areas outside. The millionaires were present, obviously; Nelson wanted them to know where they were investing all their money.

Nelson was an African American man who was highly educated, and his job was to convince people to make a mutual agreement. His ability to perceive, analyze, and detect dislikes was useful in knowing when he was on the right track.

"Ladies and gentlemen, first of all, I must tell you that you are possibly in one of the safest places on the planet. The librarian made sure that everything turned out this way, of course; he is aware that you may not believe what is happening in the world, so he brought you a sample."

After saying this, Nelson pointed behind him to how Antonio's men were bringing two bullets covered with white sheets.

"The first thing we need to know is that we all have the virus incubated in our bodies, similar to cancer; we all have it, but it's not developed." Nelson pointed to one of the cages behind him, and at that moment, Antonio removed the blanket.

"Arrgghhh!"

At that moment, the caged walker, as soon as it saw the people, started trying to pass through the metal bars to fulfill its desire to eat.

"Is that an infected one?"

"For God's sake, are we going to get infected?"

Many panicked, especially the millionaires, who immediately wanted to get away. But Stuart didn't react; he looked at all the people who were being noisy and shouted, "Silence!"

Nelson smiled upon hearing that everyone had quieted down, pointed to the walker in the cage, and said, "The librarian has told me very few things about these infected ones, but he was explicit in saying that it's not a viral infection. Their main method of transmission is the connection of our blood with a bite from these things, a small scratch, or their blood coming into contact with a cut on our bodies."

When everyone heard this, they moved a little closer to the man, who had a pale face.

"How do you kill them?" Stuart looked at many deep knife cuts on that body, but miraculously, it was alive.

Antonio then opened one of the cells where the live gang member was, dragged him out, and kneeled him in front of the other cage.

"We haven't gotten to that yet; what you need to know now is that once we die, we will turn into walking dead. If we're bitten, we have less than 24 hours before becoming walking dead. The way to avoid infection is by cutting off a limb within the first five minutes."

Nelson then nodded. Although he was afraid, his professionalism and usefulness to Dominic kept him in this place along with his family.

Antonio then opened the door of the cell where the walker was, who without hesitation started trying to bite the other gang member, who after a while succeeded.

"The walkers have an insatiable desire to consume human flesh; they are strong and fast in the first thirty days, but their physical capabilities will decrease over time." Nelson wiped the sweat from his forehead and said, "The way to kill them is just by damaging their brain; nothing else will kill them."

"Aaaaahhhhh!!!"

Everyone watched as that walker ripped off a large piece of skin from the man on the floor, then Antonio, who was nearby, raised his gun and emptied the magazine into the walker's back.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Any bodily injury is useless; only a shot to the head is enough. If you try to pierce their skull, remember it's very hard; putrefaction starts late, and that will make it impossible to pierce the skull with a single attack." Nelson said, hoping everyone understood.

At that moment, the walker who had just killed the gang member stood up to go after the others.

Stuart observed how the black blood was a visible sign that the man in front of them was dead. Twelve shots and he didn't die—that means only one thing: walkers are predators.

"A single walker is easy to eliminate, but now imagine a football stadium full of these things. In a protest or school, things will become increasingly unsustainable, even for the army." Nelson said, stepping back more and more as he saw the walker approaching him.

But at that moment, Antonio, who had reloaded his gun, approached and shot the walker in the head.

Bang!

The bullet shattered the head of that putrid walker, filling the place with blood and guts.

"Don't forget to also eliminate those who have been killed; these walkers will rise if their brains are not damaged." Nelson said, watching as the corpse on the floor that had been bitten now rose as a walker.

Stuart then said, "You mentioned that in twenty-four hours one becomes one; what happens to this one?"

"When the body dies, it stops resisting the virus; that's what happens... Of course, each body is different, and everything changes." Nelson took a deep breath, knowing he had done his job.

To conclude, Nelson looked at everyone and said, "The Librarian has a message for you: live under my rules, and we will live long enough to know where we will be fifty years from now; may luck always be on our side."

Stuart remained pensive; he had always wanted to meet the man behind all this, but it seems he will continue to wait for some time longer.
