Chapter 9: Chapter 09 – Attack
Kakashi returned around midnight when Naruto was dozing off in the corner of the room. Naruto jumped from his seat and then cleaned the droll from his mouth.
"Relax, nothing happened until now," Kakashi said. "You guys should go to bed since we are going to patrol the whole town during the whole day. We will work together in the morning, and then we will cover more ground in the afternoon."
Falling asleep was difficult for everyone, even for Sasuke, who was still trying to understand the situation at hand. That kind of event would change the entire timeline. It won't surprise him if the villages changed the chunin exams and only examined their own genin instead of coming to the hidden leaf village.
When morning arrived, Sasuke woke up only to see that Kakashi was no longer there. He tried to keep his focus on the surroundings, but as expected of a Jounin that could become the sixth Hokage… his skills still were on a whole new level. In the end, Kakashi showed up one hour later, and Sasuke had the chance to do some training thanks to it.
"Wake up, sleepy heads," Kakashi said. "We need to be out when most of the people began to leave their homes. So, we don't have all day here."
As planned, the group decided to start their day by having breakfast at a nearby restaurant before beginning their patrol around the town. It was a simple yet effective way to gather information and assess the situation. However, as they moved through the streets, they couldn't help but notice the subtle shift in the townspeople's demeanor.
While many were accustomed to seeing Hidden Leaf ninjas in their town, there was a growing awareness that their presence usually meant trouble was brewing. Despite the team's efforts to blend in and maintain a casual appearance, whispers and rumors began to circulate among the locals. Some speculated about the reason for their sudden visit, while others exchanged hushed theories about potential threats looming on the horizon.
"It looks like some people here imagined that this could happen at some point," Kakashi said. "Some of this place's inhabitants work crossing the borders, so they should have noticed something. Anyway, it is time to split up. Naruto will patrol the north, Sakura the south, Sasuke the East, and me the West. Use the radio if you find something odd, and don't sleep on the job."
Those three nodded and soon they jumped to the ceilings of the nearby building and then spread in all directions. The Body Flicker Technique had leveled up earlier since Sasuke used some Experience, and now he could easily jump from one roof to the other. It was quite a good feeling to get a skill like that in the beginning.
"... It seems that I will have the easiest area to guard," Sasuke thought when he arrived on the border of the town and looked around. "Or maybe not. Shinobi might come from the West, but bandits would come from all other directions."
Considering the map of the shinobi world that he could recall, Sasuke assumed that bandits coming from the south would be the most likely outcome since the ocean and a massive lake were in that direction. There were also some large forests there, easy for them to use and hide in. That being said, had they already heard that something had happened?
Their response had been pretty fast, after all. If something happens, then they would have enough time to respond to it accordingly. Besides, a lot of shinobi are closer to the border now, so things would be fine.
Just as Sasuke began to relax a bit, letting down his guard as he looked around the town, a powerful sound shattered the calm. His senses went on high alert as the ground beneath him trembled. With a sense of urgency, Sasuke turned his gaze to the west, where a smoke screen rose into the sky, darkening the horizon.
Instinctively, Sasuke knew something was terribly wrong. His heart raced as he watched explosions rip through the forest in that direction, each blast sending shockwaves through the air. The sudden chaos shattered the peaceful atmosphere of the town, leaving Sasuke and his team on edge.
"Explosive stickers? Someone activated some traps there?" Sasuke thought.
"Can you three hear me?" Kakashi asked via radio. "I am going to check what happened there. Don't leave your positions unless you are forced to. Remember, you are working as shinobi."
Kakashi didn't wait for those three to answer and soon he ended the call. In the end, Sasuke was curious to see what had happened there, but he saw a bunch of shinobi heading in the same direction as well… before long, it became clear that someone very crafty had lured them in. Sasuke realized that when he looked to West and then saw a group of people dashing to the town, they were dressed like ninjas, but their speed was quite slow…
"Disguised bandit?" Sasuke squinted his eyes and then he turned on the radio. "Sakura, Naruto. Some suspicious people that looks like bandits in disguise are coming to my direction, what is happening with you guys?"
"The same here!" Sakura said.
"Some of those guys are really big," Naruto said. "We can deal with them as we see fit, right?"
"Focus on protecting the civilians; don't let any of them pass by you," Sasuke declared.
