Chapter 39: Traitor

Stussy was about to leave when Whitebeard asked her to stay.

To be more accurate, he had ordered her to stay. Stussy couldn't do anything but comply, and she came and stood right next to me. I looked at Whitebeard, who seemed to be in a rather foul mood, as he drank from a large gourd.

All the division captains were there, we had just been the last ones to arrive. Although I failed to see many of their ships. They had been sitting down and keeping quiet, bringing silence into the already tense atmosphere that we had just walked ourselves into.

I looked at Marco, who had arrived just sometime before we did with a questioning expression. He didn't seem to take the hint, and he continued to sit right beside Whitebeard. Jozu decided to sit right next to Marco, seemingly aware of the tense atmosphere.

Finally, Whitebeard spoke.

"My children, we were ambushed while sailing nearby; and many of your brethren have fallen." Whitebeard started, most of what he had just said was rather typical. After all, when you live in the sea; you are expected to die in it.

However, Whitebeard continued "I wouldn't have worried so much if it wasn't for the fact that the marines seemed to know where our exact destination was. Even going as far as to setting up sophisticated traps on our way to the destination."

The already quiet and tense air got even more tense all of the sudden. It didn't take a genius to know what he was implying: There was a mole within our crew, or even worse, a traitor.

I could already feel my expression darken as I immediately found the culprit. Chameleone wasn't someone who was active within the anime. If I remember correctly, the second division was empty before the arrival of Oden.

That would mean that if he really was the first 2nd Division commander of the Whitebeard pirates. He was either a traitor, dead or both. The real question, however, was whether the rest of the crew would figure this out.

Whitebeard suddenly slammed the butt of his naginata down on the ground with a bit of strength. The winds generated by this action blew across our faces. If he wanted to catch our attention, he had succeeded.

"Before I start this investigation to weed out this mole, I will give you a chance to stand up and confess. It is the least amount of grace I can give as your father." Whitebeard announced. However, his request was only greeted with more silence as nobody refused to come out after a while.

This only proved to piss Whitebeard off even more as he suddenly released his Conqurer's haki. His haki bore down on us with great strength, he left me with no choice but to release my own Conqurer's haki to ease the pressure on Stussy and the others.

Whitebeard saw this and immediately withdrew his own Conqurer's haki. I guess he didn't want to hurt people who weren't guilty with his wrath. More silence continued to persist, I could hear some of the division captains struggle to catch their breath.

It took a great deal of will to combat Whitebeard's Conqurer's haki, he was the strongest man in the world; after all. Anyway, Whitebeard looked at Stussy before beckoning her to come in front.

My eyes narrowed a bit as she walked up, it was more than obvious that Stussy wasn't the culprit. She had been sleeping when Big Mom attacked Jozu's ship. Moreover, she was in Ulvehoved when we received the news that Whitebeard had been ambushed.

She stood timidly before him, Whitebeard only patted her hair before saying, "As a former CP0 agent, can you tell when someone is lying?" To this question, Stussy nodded. Whitebeard gave her a soft smile before turning to the crowd.

"Except for Marco, Jozu and Boris. Everyone line up infront of her, I will ask you a question: If she detects a lie, I will forget that you are my son and kill you without mercy." Whitebeard hissed coldly at the rest of the division captains.

[ Stussy POV ]

I was scared out of my wits, to be honest. My instincts were just screaming at me non-stop to make a run for it as I walked up to Whitebeard. His rage just kept sending endless shivers down my spine.

When he patted my head and smiled softly, I almost let out a sigh of relief. Good thing I had not, because his chilly scowl returned promptly as he glared at the rest of the division commanders. I stole a glance at Boris to see his reaction, his old cold face had returned.

What was more concerning was the fact that his axe was no longer strapped on his back. Rather, the blade laid comfortably on the ground. As Boris rested his hand on the butt of the axe, he looked around the group of division commanders; before promptly landing his gaze on the second division commander, Chameleone.

Ironically, he was the first one to step up to answer one of Whitebeard's questions. He looked confident as he walked up to me, only stopping only a few meters opposite mine. Whitebeared glared at Chameleone promptly before asking,

"What were you doing the night of the attack?" Chameleone flinched. His actions didn't go unnoticed to my gaze.

I quickly activated my Observation haki to detect his hearbeat. One thing that the CP0 special forces academy had taught us was that a person's heart can tell a whole story. Using Observation Haki, one can easily tell whether their telling the truth or not.

As I quietly listened to his heartbeat using it, Chameleone would start giving a long tale about his activities last night. His heart slowly started beating wildly as he continued his story, it was pretty obvious that we had just found our culprit.

Chameleone finished his story as Whitebeard turned and looked at me. The entire camp was tense as they waited for my response. I looked right at Chameleone before saying,

"He lied" Those two words were like a shockwave throughout the entire group. Boris remained standing, unfazed by the declaration that I had just made.

I quickly turned to look at him, but Chameleone grabbed me by the neck and sticking a blade real close to it before I could.

"Fucking hell, I really thought I could get away with that! I should've looked a little more into the crew. Who knew a ex-CP0 agent was one of their own." Everybody froze, Boris included. I could feel a chilling aura coming right from him as he stared at Chameleone with eyes filled with murderous intent.

Whitebeard's eyes narrowed into slits as he glared at Chameleone. "Why would you betray us?"

Chameleone only snickered as he used his long tongue to lick my cheeck. He was about to say something when grabbed his arm and twisted it.

He was shocked as I managed to flip him over and slam him to the ground. Nobody gets to lick me, except, well....you know.

He groaned in pain as he lay on the ground. Whitebeard promptly grabbed him by his collar before lifting him up. His eyes were cold as light emitted from the hand that he was holding Chameleone.

Chameleone screamed as he was slammed into the ground. I could hear his bones crush and heart burst. When the smoke had cleared, Chameleone laid there, broken and dead.
