Chapter 2: Before the fall: Part one

He wakes up on a daze. The room slightly spinning. The sound of the Alarm blares his senses. With a quick motion he sits up and leans over to turn off the alarm.

"God, I hate that alarm"

It was 6:45am in the morning. Morning rays of sunshine peaked from his blinds, the bedroom was mostly decorated with white, White pillows to white bedsheets to a white desk. His fiancé mostly choose everything. Looking around he didn't see her, understandably of course, her work shift starts at 5:00am. He Still felt sad to not wake up beside his love. With the light Reflecting off all the white his room looked as if it was the middle of afternoon. He Sluggishly made his way down the hall to the bathroom to complete he morning routine.

He must have forgot to turn on the heat before bed because the hardwood floor was freezing his feet. It woke him quicker then the alarm. After completing his morning routine, he got dressed and made sure he looked fit in the mirror before heading out.

He looked at himself. And contempt filled him. The black hoodie with dark blue skinny fit jeans really didn't fit him.

"Aw fuck it, Who cares what others think"

With a quick glance at the clock stating it's 7:27 he grabbed his car keys and headed out the door.

The road to work was the same as the week before. Construction slowing traffic, almost to a standstill. Seeming to think blowing their horn would make traffic go quicker most cars did it.

"Ughhh, I knew I should have took the 58 west! Dammit! If I'm late again Julie is going to kill me!"

Taking out his phone he called his boss. After ringing for 10 seconds with no answer he hung it up.

"Mmm? That's strange? She always picks up"

Throwing his phone on the passenger seat he looked at the never ending traffic in front of him, with a glance in the rear view he also saw the same. Trapped...He couldn't help but to start feeling agitated. Opening the glove box he pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one. Might as well smoke he thought, He's going to be there for another hour or so.

Finally traffic began to move again. After ten more minutes of driving he got to work. He worked in a small firm managing finances. Not a great job but it gets him by. With his fiancé working as well they make enough to afford a comfortable life in the city. Even though he hates the city.

Checking the time once more on his phone 8:45.

"Great! 45 minutes late"

Rushing out the car and waking to the entrance of the building, he burst though door and made his way to the time clock. On his way he passed several of his co workers, none of which spoke to him. All with the exception of one. As he was sliding his card in the time clock a tall blonde haired man approached him.

"Hahahaha late again Kira. Let me guess traffic? What's that? The third time this month?"

How annoying Kira thought. He tried to not let it bother him. Still, this is the constant with this man. No matter what Kira did he was there. To judge him. Fucking anything Kira thought again.

" listen Jake, today is not day but yes traffic, dumbass construction on freeway 99. Can you go away now? I have to catch up on my work."

Kira responded with as much of a condescending attitude he could muster. But petty people got petty responses. Walking away with a pace that didn't give Jake a chance to respond was Kira's go to move when dealing with him.

Finding his desk in the middle of the office area he sat down and logged into his computer. The buzz of his coworkers working in the background somehow put his mind at ease, thus his work began. Call after call. Hour after hour. Numbers after numbers. His day flew by. Surprisingly no one bothered him till the end of his work day.

Finally 30 minutes before his work day finished a small red haired women walked up to his desk. And planted and stern hand on the edge of it.

"Kira, do you care to explain why you were late again to work? Ugh, I already know the answer. It's the traffic. But you have to take a different route. It's getting to the point where I can't help you anymore."

As the red hair women spoke she leaned in closer to him. Kira could smell her from this distance now. Smelled sweet, it Wasn't pleasant. Smelled like she sprayed to perfume much on.

"I know Julie, it won't happen again. Just been a little hard lately that's all. I'll figure it out"

Kira leaned back. Her smell was becoming nauseating . When did his sense smell become so strong? That's besides point.

"What happened this morning? You didn't pick up the phone? Everything okay Julie? I don't mean to pry but I am curious"

Sitting on his desk now Julie responded with a complicated expression.

"It's our investors. A lot of the big ones are pulling out. And no one knows why."

She leaned in and whispered the last part

" so much so we all might be in trouble soon."

With a heavy sigh she got up and slapped the desk.

"Listen just don't be later again. To make up for it stay and finish out the time you missed."

Dammit. I was really hoping she didn't say that. Kira thought.
