Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Summoned
"Wake up Jemma, the world has need of you."
Jemma rubbed her eyes sure she was still dreaming. There was an old man standing above her. His grisly gray hair was down past his shoulders, his robes were mundane and inconspicuous but his blue eyes seemed to flash fire.
"Who, who are you?" Jemma stammered.
"I am the wizard Randal, the kingdom is at war with the elves and needs you power to defend it.
"I'm a girl."
"Your father was the most powerful wizard I knew. Your mother was the child of the royal wizard. You have more magic flowing through you than most wizards. Most females have a lesser capability for magic but you have more power and the affinity to more magics than anyone I have met. You my dear are a grand wizard."
"I have never met my parents. I was raised by a family who found me in a wagon that was smashed off the road. There was no sign of other occupants. How do you know all this about them and me?"
"I was charged with your care by your grandfather before he went to fight the great war. Your mother died when you were just a baby. I made the wagon accident so the family would take you in.
"And my father?"
"I don't know what happened to him. He vanished soon after your birth. I believe he left to protect you."
"From what?"
"He had many enemies, Jemma, I don't know which was after you."
"And you believe King Reynold will appoint me the royal wizardess?"
"He needs you whether or not he can accept that is yet to be seen. Never in time has there been record of a female with the power of a grand wizard, to be summoned as a hero is even more unheard of; however, you are the hero of this war and need to step up and be trained to take your place at the head of the army. the elven queen may even be more willing to stand down if a female leads our army."
"I know nothing about war."
"I Wizard Randal, First Wizard of Udolphia, summon you to the service of the King of Udolphia as the Grand Wizardess and Hero of the people." Wizard Randal waved his sword above her bed and disappeared.
Jemma rubbed her eyes. What a strange dream. She knew it was almost time to start breakfast so she got up to go about her normal duties for the day but found herself packing for a trip instead.
