Chapter 2: She Is Not My Father’s Daughter

It wasn't just the voice but the intimacy in those words that sent a wave of disbelief crashing over Grace.

Wide-eyed, she exclaimed, "What... what's going on?"

Rufus's expression hardened as he gently pushed Grace away, his voice cold and distant.

"Grace, I think you should leave now," he said, gritting his teeth.

Confusion and hurt swirled within Grace as she stumbled backward, her mind reeling from the betrayal unfolding before her.

"Sweetheart, what's keeping you?" Lisa asked as she came into full glare of Grace's sight.

"What is my sister doing, walking naked in your apartment? Are you cheating on me?" Grace asked, refusing to believe the apparent truth before her.

"It is exactly what it is and I'm glad you finally found out about us," Lisa, Grace's younger sister announced with a smirk.

Rufus turned his face away when Grace tried to catch his eyes.

"Rufus!" Grace mustered her last bit of strength to remain sane. She was seething in anger and her fingers cut deep into her palm as she tightened her fists.

"I'm sorry you have to find out this way. Actually, I've been meaning to tell you but I just couldn't bring myself to tell you yet."

"Really? Why Rufus? Even if you'd cheat on me, why do it with my kid sister?"

"I'm not a kid for your information," Lisa refuted immediately. "At least I gave him what you couldn't after three years of a boring relationship, so who is the kid here?" Lisa retorted, flaunting her full breast that was barely covered by her towel.

"So you left me because of sex? Or is there another reason for your betrayal?" Grace asked Rufus, ignoring her sister.

"Stop sounding pathetic and buzz off. As you can see we were about having a nice time," Lisa snapped impatiently at the same time leaning towards Rufus seductively.

"You heard her, we need some privacy," Rufus reiterated Lisa's words to Grace's chagrin.

Grace's eyes darted from Lisa's nearly naked body to Rufus whose eyes was already laden with desire.

Of course she was really pathetic. How could she not have known that something was going on between the two of them. The signs were all there but she blindly ignored them.

They were always so close and hardly missed spending time together whenever Rufus came to visit.

And whatever her sister asked for, Rufus would always get it for her. She only saw it as Rufus doting on her little sister because of the love they shared.

Many times he would even ask her to send Lisa to help him with some work. Now she understood what the work was all about.

She was helping him service his cursed dick while he screwed her senseless.

She didn't know how she found herself downstairs but she suddenly remembered some of her stuff was still in the apartment.

They were her draft designs that she had kept there since his place was closer to her office than her own house.

As much as she didn't want to set eyes on them again, she had to force herself to take the elevator to the apartment again.

As she got to the door, she heard the two lovers laughing unrestrainedly.

Her hand that was lifted to knock froze in place by the things she heard next.

"Can you believe it, babe? She never suspected a thing about the affairs at the company. And now, with her out of the picture, we can finally be together without any distractions."

"Wait, what are they talking about? I need to get something straight," Grace muttered to herself and placed her ear closer to the door.

"It's also perfect. Using her phone and emails to send out those company secrets was genius. She'll be the one taking the fall, and we'll be free to do as we please."

Lisa's laughter echoed in the room, her words stabbing Grace's heart like a knife.

"What?!" Grace nearly screamed but was quick enough to clasp her hands over her mouth before her voice could be heard. Maybe there's still more.

"So it's him," she gasped regretfully.

Who would have access to her phone and emails if not Rufus. He was the only person she discussed the plan for the next company designs with since she had always trusted him.

"I just hope Fiona will be able to keep to her promise and get me a spot in her father's company," she heard Rufus say.

"Of course she will. Fiona is my friend and since she has promised you, she will not fail."

Tears blurred Grace's vision as the full extent of their betrayal hit her like a freight train.

The two people she trusted most had not only deceived her but used her to further their own malicious agenda. They've been working together with Fiona all these while just to pull her down. What wrong had she done to them?

Grace stood frozen in the doorway, her heart shattered into a million pieces by the betrayal of her boyfriend and sister.

"What have I done to deserve this?"

As she tried to compose herself to leave, another remark filtered into her ears which caused her to stop in her tracks.

"I bet your sister never saw that coming," Rufus laughed cynically.

"Sister? She was never my sister." Grace could clearly hear the disdain in Lisa's voice.

"Rufus, there's something you need to know about Grace. She's not my Dad's daughter," she declared.

The words hit Grace again like a sledgehammer, leaving her breathless and numb. She struggled to comprehend the magnitude of what she's just heard.

Surprised, Rufus asked, "What do you mean she's not your dad's daughter?"

"Nobody knows about this, but I overheard my grandmother telling her friend that Grace's mother was pregnant with her before she got married to my dad and almost died while giving birth to her after she married dad. Dad took pity on her and raised her as his own. But she's nothing but an illegitimate child, burdening our family with her presence," Lisa narrated.

Grace's world crumbled even further as the truth of her own identity was called into question.

With tears streaming down her cheeks, she finally managed to tear herself away from the door and fled from the apartment.
