Chapter 15: A Due Conversation
Anna was quite aware of Sophia's doubts giving the extra line on her forehead, but she was not in a hurry to give her the answer she wanted.
"I'm sitting here alone." Without waiting for Sophia to clear up the question, she added, "I am really grateful that you came out to see me so urgently."
Sophia released a soft sigh. "It's nothing," she said while waving her off.
"Recently, some rumours have reached my ears and I called you out to confirm it." Anna adjusted her sitting position and propped the length of her arms on the table.
Before Sophia's arrival, she had already slipped off her wedding ring. Her marriage with Roy was something private. Whenever they decide to go public with it, she can then announce it subtly.
Besides, she had come out to verify her boyfriend and her best friend's cheating scandals, so a wedding ring from another man shouldn't be found on her finger otherwise, her actions would be no different from them.
"That was long awaited," Sophia smiled meaningfully. Her response implied that a lot of things had been going on behind her back for a long time but finally, she was being enlightened.
Soon, a waitress came over to their table to place ice cream pints before them with each, having different flavours.
"Sorry, I already ordered without waiting for your opinion," Anna apologized while watching her carefully.
Sophia smiled and picked up her pint of ice cream to taste it. "It's fine," she said even though she had her doubts.
Since she was still curious about the other woman's sight, she couldn't stop the different thoughts that disappeared as quickly as they came to her head.
For the recent thing that just happened, Sophia could only think that Anna was sensitive as a blind person because how did she know it was the waitress that came around?
As Sophia had never been around a blind person or interacted with one before, she was a little sceptical about the odd situation.
"Nice flavour, good choice," Sophia said as she put down her pint of ice cream to focus on their conversation after all, she was not here in the first place to enjoy more than a handful of sugar.
"Now, what rumours do you want to confirm?" she asked, her gaze straying to Anna who hadn't bothered to touch her pint of ice cream.
Again, Sophia was confused about whether Anna did not know how to help herself to it because of her blindness, or she simply ordered the ice cream for decoration purposes.
"It's regarding my boyfriend Sam Hollan, and my best friend, Susan Young." Anna did not waste time anymore. And she made sure to include the two people's surnames just so she would be fed the right information in case there was another cheating couple with the same name out there.
"Hahaha… girl! If I were you, I would drop that term 'best friend' already because it looks like you have been blinder than before, and my apologies if you dislike the term 'blind' as it best describes your situation."
"No offence taken." Anna put up a hand in front of her. She looked down and released a deep breath before lifting her head. "So, it's true," she mumbled to herself before saying to her, "Do you have any evidence?"
Anna's tone had no doubts, so Sophia did not seem offended instead, she leaned in towards the table to say to her, "Even if I had the evidence, how will you see them?"
It was at this point that Anna felt like taking off her sunshades and publicly announcing that she could now see with her eyes but unfortunately, no matter how many times she screamed that statement inside her head, she couldn't say them out.
Because she did not want this information to reach the wrong people before she made the official announcement, she had to curtail her desires no matter how strongly she felt them.
Sophia noticed that Anna was silent for a long time and squeezed her eyes shut. She really wanted to slap her mouth for repeatedly reminding Anna that she was blind. But just when she felt the need to apologize genuinely, this time around, she heard Anna say while looking unbothered, "I will have to trouble you to send the evidence to me for keepsake."
"You sure?" Sophia was surprised and wanted to tell her that it might be useless since she couldn't see them anyway, but she remembered to bite the tip of her tongue in time.
"Yes, please."
"Okay. I will in a few minutes."
"Thank you for meeting me," Anna replied, putting an end to their meeting and of course, Sophia was not daft to not understand. It's just that she was completely out of it due to how their meeting started and ended.
Like, Anna never asked about the details of the cheating couple that betrayed her. She only asked to confirm if the rumours were true before asking for the pieces of picture evidence.
That was abnormal.
Couldn't they have handled everything over the phone instead of meeting in person? Sophia was left confused, but before she left, she made sure to pick up the remaining pint of her ice cream to Anna's surprise.
Sophia was actually carefree in nature, and she seemed like a kind person to Anna.

By the time Anna returned home, her worried-sick mother who was unable to reach her for the entire time it took her to register her marriage with Roy and meet up with Sophia had already made dinner.
Seeing that young woman walk right through the door of their home unscathed, Mrs. Carter sighed in relief.
"I was almost about to call Susan or Sam to ask about you," she said as her gaze followed Anna.
"And I'm glad you didn't," Anna finished for her with a smile before approaching her to kiss her left cheek.
Mrs. Carter shook her head. "Dinner is ready, go and wash your hands first, I will take your bag for you."
"No, thank you." Anna avoided her outstretched arms and stepped away from her. "I need to wash my face as well, so I will keep my bag on the way."
Mrs. Carter looked confused and deserted and she was beginning to think that she did not know who her child was anymore since her return from Canada.
It seemed like they were due for a long intimate conversation.
